The 2018 Pro Mazda Champion Rinus VeeKay (Hoofddrop, Netherlands) will make his first appearance in the Indy Lights car since winning the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires earlier this month. This will be the 18-year-old’s second time in the Indy Lights car on 2.439 mile, 14-Turn road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
VeeKay dominated the second half of the 2018 Pro Mazda Championship winning five consecutive races and six consecutive poles. The young rookie took home a total of 10 podiums, seven poles, and seven wins during the season.
“I’m happy to say that I will test Indy Lights at the Chris Griffis test with Juncos Racing,” said VeeKay. “I’ve experienced an amazing and very successful Pro Mazda season with them and I am looking forward to prepare myself for the next level in my Road To Indy!”
Team Owner Ricardo Juncos said, “We are really excited to get Rinus (VeeKay) in the Indy Lights car with us this weekend. He had an incredible Pro Mazda season. It was a battle for the championship all year long, but Rinus really started taking control with his five straight wins. He was extremely focused all year and it proved to pay off by winning the championship. I know he will be successful this weekend when he gets behind the wheel of the Indy Lights car.”

PABST RACING PLANNING FOR EXCITING 2019 SEASON

PABST RACING PLANNING FOR EXCITING 2019 SEASON
Two-Time USF2000 Team Championship Organization Expanding Efforts to Pro Mazda Championship
Oconomowoc, Wisconsin (September 7, 2018) – When it comes to Pabst Racing’s focus on its racing efforts, motorsports legend Mario Andretti puts it best as he once said, “Desire is the key to motivation.” With back-to-back Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda team championship titles in 2017 and 18’, one could say that Pabst Racing’s desire towards consistency and excellence is as competitive as its efforts on the track.
While the USF2000 season recently wrapped up, Pabst Racing’s focus is on its 2019 program. Next year, the team will return to the USF2000 series to defend its second straight team title championship. Notably, Pabst Racing will transition from a four-car team to a three-car effort to maximize results for its drivers and personnel. The USF2000 series, which debuted in 2010 as a revival of the USF2000 series that ran from 1990 through 2016, has launched the careers of many of today’s top racers.
Moreover, Pabst Racing will expand its open wheel program next year with a two-car team in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.
“I’m thrilled to expand into Pro Mazda for 2019. Our team has been assembled with a fantastic group of mechanics and engineering staff with unprecedented continuity,” said team owner Augie Pabst. “Along with our existing staff, we have placed additional personnel within the team to ensure that our Pro Mazda program will seamlessly debut at the same level as our USF2000 program.”
This division, which debuted as a new series in 2012 that replaced the Star Mazda Championship, is the second step up the Mazda Road to Indy ladder between the USF2000 and Indy Lights series. Much like the USF2000 and the IndyCar Series, drivers and teams compete on road courses, street circuits, and ovals.
As Pabst Racing prepares for 2019, the team will accept inquiries from drivers interested in racing for its USF2000 and Pro Mazda Championship efforts.
Pabst added, “Our two Pro Mazda cars were built to the same high standards as our USF2000 cars and after completing over 2,000 trouble free initial test miles we are ready to test new drivers in preparation for 2019.”
Pabst Racing’s commitment towards winning results, dating to its origins in the late 1950s, not only reflects on the track, but with its talented personnel rich in experience from the competitive worlds of IndyCar, Champ Car, and LeMans. Team Pelfrey Indy Lights Re-Locating to Indianapolis

Quick side note from TSO Ladder: I (Steve) had the chance to catch up with Dale Pelfrey in Portland last weekend, and it quickly became clear that the aerospace entrepreneur is committed to being part of the top rung of the American Open Wheel ladder. Pelfrey was also proud of Patricio O’Ward’s Indy Lights victory. The long-time team owner gave the then 15-year-old Mexican a home on his Pro Mazda Presented By Cooper Tire team in 2015.
Team Pelfrey Indy Lights Relocating to Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 7, 2018) – Team Pelfrey is excited to announce that its Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team will be relocating to its Indianapolis headquarters effective immediately.  Having had recent success with its Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires team out of Indianapolis, Team Pelfrey is now focused on re-launching its Indy Lights outfit for the 2019 season, beginning with the Chris Griffis test, September 22-23.

“We are focused on getting the Indy Lights team back on track after a difficult 2018 season,” commented Dale Pelfrey, Founder of Team Pelfrey.  “Having seen the changes Andersen Promotions have put in place for next season, along with consolidating our efforts out of Indianapolis with the Pro Mazda team where we have an exceptional crew, I am looking forward to seeing us back in competition in 2019,” commented Dale Pelfrey.

“It’s a good move for the team, and the push for 2019 starts now,” commented Team Manager, Gary Neal.  “We have had interest for both the Indy Lights and Pro Mazda teams ahead of next season, and it’s our intention to be on track at the Chris Griffis test later this month”.

Team Pelfrey’s Indy Lights and Pro Mazda teams will return to action for the Chris Griffis Open Test, September 22-23.

Motorsports Veteran Jonny Baker Joins Andersen Promotions

Motorsports Veteran Jonny Baker Joins Andersen Promotions
Baker Will Play Key Role as Series Development Director

PALMETTO, Fla. (September 6, 2018) – A familiar and respected face around the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires paddock, Jonny Baker will join Andersen Promotions in a newly created position as Series Development Director for all three levels of the world renowned ladder system. Baker will step into his new post immediately, following the conclusion of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda season finales at Portland International Raceway this past weekend.

Baker’s role will be multifaceted but his primary focus will be as a liaison with current teams and drivers to understand their challenges, assist in development of the Mazda Road to Indy in the recruitment of prospective drivers and teams, and as an advisor to Andersen Promotions on key areas for continued growth. Baker will be visiting racing events around the world in his new series development role, and will be providing feedback to ensure that the three ladder series remain competitive on a global basis compared to other motorsport platforms on offer.

“I am very excited for this new opportunity with Andersen Promotions,” said Baker. “For a number of reasons in my life, I had to take the tough decision to move on from Team Pelfrey, and I can’t thank Dale Pelfrey and the team enough for all they have done for me. I am passionate about this sport and the Mazda Road to Indy and, having spoken with Dan [Andersen] and Michelle [Kish], it became clear that there was a very exciting opportunity to become involved with the series. I have had a relationship with them since 2007, and it has come back around full circle.

“Having been a former driver and team manager, I understand the paddock from both a driver and team perspective, and there are several key areas where I feel I can have an immediate impact. Getting young and exciting driving talent interested and involved with the Mazda Road to Indy has been one of my key roles in years gone by, and I am excited to continue this in my new capacity. The Mazda Road to Indy has so much to offer with its development system, scholarships, track time, venues, etc., and I will be helping to spread this message far and wide.”

Co-founder alongside Anders Krohn of the highly successful CoForce consulting, marketing and digital agency in 2011, Baker most recently served as General Manager for Team Pelfrey’s USF2000 and Pro Mazda programs since 2014, overseeing multiple race and championship wins. In addition to his former role as Director of Driver Development at Andersen Racing, he was also Track Manager at Andersen RacePark for five years, from start-up to successful development of the corporate and competition karting facility in Palmetto, Fla. Baker holds a Business Administration Degree from the University of the West of England.

Baker’s racing exploits include British Formula Ford, USF2000 and Pro Mazda from 2005 to 2008.

“We are very excited to welcome Jonny to our team,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “I have known him for over a decade, and believe he will be a tremendous asset not only to Andersen Promotions but our teams and drivers. This new position is something we have been thinking about for a while, but we needed the right person. When we learned he was available, it was a no brainer.

“Jonny already has a working relationship with our current staff, partners and most of the paddock and is up-to-date on everything Mazda Road to Indy-wise. As opposed to bringing someone in from the outside and getting them up to speed, this will be a seamless transition and he can hit the ground running. We have a great product in place, but we are always looking at ways to be better. Jonny will be a welcome addition.”

Baker will make his first trackside appearance in his new role at the annual Chris Griffis Memorial Open Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on September 22/23.

BN Racing Confirms Expansion into Indy Lights for 2019 Chicago-based Team to Field Cars on all Three Levels of the Road to Indy

PALMETTO, Fla. – After a season of small fields – but no shortage of thrilling action among an extremely talented group of drivers – Andersen Promotions is pleased to announce that a new team, BN Racing, will enter the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires fray in 2019. The Chicago, IL-based squad today confirmed plans to enter at least one Dallara-Mazda IL-15, in addition to its existing commitments in both the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.

Indy Lights represents the top rung on the highly acclaimed Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires, which offers talented young open-wheel drivers a series of opportunities to progress from the grassroots of the sport to the pinnacle in North America. No fewer than 25 of the 33 starters in this year’s Indianapolis 500 graduated via Indy Lights. As confirmed recently, the winner of next year’s Indy Lights championship will claim an enhanced scholarship valued at $1.1M to guarantee entry into at least three IndyCar Series events in 2020, including the 104th Indianapolis 500.

BN Racing is led by Englishman Bryn Nuttall, who has an extensive background in many areas of motorsports globally, from the engineering side to management and coaching aspects of the sport, with success all around the world.

The team has made quite an impression since bursting onto the scene with a partial season of USF2000 competition in 2017. Despite missing the opening four races, BN guided teenager David Malukas to a pole position in just his second event start at Road America and ended the season with a best finish of second, as well as three consecutive top-six results to round out its initial campaign.

The progression continued into 2018 as BN added a pair of Pro Mazda cars to its roster. The young team’s highlight came once again at Road America, where Malukas and Englishman Toby Sowery finished first and second in each of the two races and Keith Donegan earned his first podium finish in USF2000, claiming a season record of five podiums during a race weekend. The team finished the 2018 season in style with Malukas winning the last race of the year at the Portland GP this past weekend.

In a little over a year BN Racing has become an established front running team in both categories, with race wins, podiums, pole positions and lap records strewn across its impressive first full season in 2018.

“I’m delighted to be able to announce we will enter the 2019 Indy Lights championship and complete the team’s ability to offer all three categories of these outstanding racing series operated by Andersen Promotions,” said Nuttall. “Not only is this a key step in moving forward as a racing team but with the extra personnel coming in, this will also strengthen my already established USF2000 and Pro Mazda teams, which is a very critical point for me. My aim is to have the capability of winning in every series we enter.

“I’m under no illusions on how tough 2019 in Indy Lights is going to be, but we’ve shown many times over the last 18 months what we are capable of, so let’s see what happens when March arrives.”

BN will announce its driver and testing plans in the coming weeks.

“We are very excited to welcome BN Racing to the Indy Lights paddock,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “Bryn has established his credentials with front-running teams in both USF2000 and Pro Mazda, and I expect no less from him in Indy Lights. His dedication and passion in helping drivers reach the top level of our sport is underscored with his expansion to now include all three levels of the ladder system. Bryn is a go-getter and has put a great program in place in a short amount of time. We are looking forward to seeing his hard work and commitment pay off with continued success in Indy Lights.”

Heamin Choi (Busan, Korea) made his first appearance with Juncos Racing at the 2017 Mazda Road to Indy Chris Griffis Test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Choi previously competed in the 2015 Indy Lights Championship at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Choi will pilot the No. 7 Juncos Racing car on the 1.97 mile, 12-Turn road course located in Portland, Oregon.

Choi said, “I’m very excited to come back to the Indy Lights Championship with Juncos Racing. It was really hard to have a long break without racing. During my break I worked on meeting a lot of people and finding some Korean partners. The Portland race will be good preparation for my next season and my Indy 500 hopefully in the near future. I hope to get my confidence back and show my potential at Portland International Raceway. I appreciate Ricardo (Juncos) for giving me a great opportunity and my supporters in Korea.”

Team Principle Ricardo Juncos said, “We are pleased to have Heamin (Choi) back with us. We had a great time working with him last October at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Chris Griffis test. I want to thank Heamin, his family, and sponsors for the opportunity to work with him again.”

Dates Announced for 2019 Road to Indy Spring Training

Dates Announced for 2019 Spring Training
Traditional Florida Kick-off for Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 Teams and Drivers

PALMETTO, Fla. (August 16, 2018) – The 2019 Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires open-wheel driver development program will kick off another exciting season of racing for all three levels as Andersen Promotions today confirmed that the traditional Spring Training Open Test will return to Homestead-Miami Speedway, in Homestead, Fla., on March 2-4, 2019.

The proven ladder system, which offers a series of scholarships to assist young drivers in progressing all the way from the grassroots of the sport to the Verizon IndyCar Series, will continue for a 10th consecutive season. As recently confirmed by INDYCAR, the value of the Indy Lights champion’s scholarship prize will rise to $1.1 million next season, ensuring entry into a minimum of three Verizon IndyCar Series races in 2020, including the 104th Indianapolis 500.

Next year’s Spring Training will comprise three days of on-track action on the 2.21-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway road course. The first two rungs on the open-wheel ladder, the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda and the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, will each take to the track on Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, with a total of four hours of testing time.

The Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires field will have its own dedicated day of action on Monday, March 4, comprising five hours of track time on the road course.

In addition to testing, Spring Training will include the invaluable Road to Indy Driver Summit Program, which collectively will provide the perfect “warmup” for the start of the regular season on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 8-10. Activities include a comprehensive competition presentation, media training – which most recently was hosted by prominent authorities and noted broadcasters Leigh Diffey and Kevin Lee – and unique presentations on the sixth annual Cooper Tires social media hashtag program and Road to Indy TV, which returns for its sixth season.

“The Spring Training program really starts off our season on a high note,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “Competitors can take what they learn from a variety of facets and apply this knowledge only a few days later when we head to St. Petersburg. There is plenty of track time and classroom time, which is part of our goal of preparing drivers as best we can. The three days also gives us a look at how much drivers have learned as they move up the ladder and which newcomers look poised to shine. This and our annual Chris Griffis test are really exciting as we watch all the progress being made by teams and drivers alike.”

The current Mazda Road to Indy season has two pivotal rounds coming up at Gateway Motorsports Park, which features additional oval championship points and will be of major significance, and the season finale at Portland International Raceway. While Kyle Kirkwood of Cape Motorsports has already put his stamp on the USF2000 championship and scholarship to advance to Pro Mazda in 2019, the Indy Lights and Pro Mazda titles are still up for grabs.

Andretti Autosport’s Patricio O’Ward currently holds a 32-point margin over Colton Herta of Andretti-Steinbrenner Racing in Indy Lights while Rinus VeeKay of Juncos Racing sits 25 points ahead of Exclusive Autosport’s Parker Thompson in the quest to secure a scholarship of $790,300 to advance from Pro Mazda to Indy Lights.

INDY LIGHTS PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES FREEDOM 100 Qualifying Report

05.24.18

The sun was shining across Indianapolis Motor Speedway today as the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights stable took to the oval for two morning practice sessions and qualifying leading into tomorrow’s Freedom 100 race.

The green flag for tomorrow’s Freedom 100 will wave at 12:30 p.m. ET. Fans can catch all 40-laps live at racecontrol.indycar.com or by downloading the Road to Indy app.

No. 28 K-LINE INSULATORS USA MAZDA
  • STARTING POSITION:1st
  • QUALIFYING SPEED: 194.673 mph
  • OF NOTE: Will make his third Freedom 100 start from the front of the grid after earning his first Indy Lights pole
“I can’t say enough of the car prep from the No. 28 K-Line guys this week. We have been consistently competitive when we come here to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The entire field is really strong, but we’re feeling good about starting from the pole position. We still have some competition rolling through, so we will see how it shakes out, but I’m really happy with how qualifying went.”

No. 27 RIVERINA CDMX MEXICO CITY MAZDA
  • STARTING POSITION: 2nd
  • QUALIFYING SPEED: 194.743 mph
  • OF NOTE: Will make his Freedom 100 debut from inside the front row
“You can start from last in the field and still win this race. We’ve been doing a lot of testing and the No. 27 car is running well. We struggled with the car at the Indianapolis Grand Prix – the car wasn’t terrible but it just wasn’t fast. Since the Grand Prix we have been making adjustments on the car and feel pretty good about where we’re at going into tomorrow. It’s a long race and it’s going to be hot.”

No. 48 JOURNEY MAZDA
  • STARTING POSITION: 3rd
  • QUALIFYING SPEED: 193.838 mph
  • OF NOTE: Starting from the second row, Norman looks to capture his first Indy Lights win on the iconic oval
“The race car is really good and I am able to place the car really anywhere I want which will be really important in the race. We did a longer stint this morning and the tires didn’t seem to fall off. I think we will still be there at the end of the race and at the end of this race is all about timing. I don’t think you will want to be leading on the last lap here. I think you will want to make the pass coming off of Turn 3 or on the straightaway to the finish line. I’m really excited for tomorrowand to see what we can do.”

No. 98 ANDRETTI-STEINBRENNER RACAING / CURB MAZDA
  • STARTING POSITION: 6th
  • QUALIFYING SPEED: 193.476 mph
  • OF NOTE: Hoping to keep the momentum going from a strong showing on the road course at IMS, Herta will make his second appearance on the oval at IMS
“The No. 98 car felt good but it almost felt like we had too much grip during the run. I’m happy – it’s great any time you get to drive around Indianapolis Motor Speedway. So starting from sixth, I’m happy with that. It doesn’t really matter where you qualify here, you can win from anywhere. For the race, the car is a little bit of an unknown. We had some problems in the practice sessions so we didn’t get to do any race running. I can work with my teammates which is helpful since they all seemed really good in race situations.”
