TEST PROGRAM FOR TEAM BENIK PRIOR TO 2019 COOPER TIRES USF2000 CAMPAIGN

Seat available for test program and complete 2019 race season

Ft. Lauderdale, FL – January 9, 2019 – With the start of the 2019 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship on the horizon, Florida based Team BENIK is kicking their off season test program into sixth gear. Set to complete multiple test days throughout January and onwards into February, one seat remains open for the 2019 season beginning on the Streets of St. Petersburg in just under two months.

“We have six days of testing planned in January and more in February,” explained Nick Mitchell. “We have had a lot of interest since confirming a full year effort and only have a few days remaining to get drivers in car this month. We are still working on securing additional days in February, but we will be on track at the Homestead-Miami Speedway at the end of the month.”

Competing at select events throughout the 2018 season, rookie driver Michael d’Orlando and female standout Sabre Cook both piloted the Team BENIK USF-17s. Progressing through the year and showing top-five pace at the end of the season, Mitchell and his program are confident of carrying that momentum onwards into 2019.

“Our team and drivers showed improved pace as the 2018 season went on,” added Mitchell. “In Mid-Ohio, Michael was at the pointy end of the field and battling inside the top-five. We have much of the same staff in 2019 so I am anticipating that upwards progression. Our goal is to not just race, but battle for race wins and podium results.”

With a pair of two-day tests scheduled at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, Team BENIK has one car remaining available for both two-day test periods. Interested parties are asked to contact Team BENIK.

2019 driver announcements will happen in the near future.

Rinus VeeKay Advances to Indy Lights with Juncos Racing

Indianapolis, Indiana (December 21, 2018) – Juncos Racing announced today that the reigning Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires champion Rinus VeeKay would return to the team for the 2019 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Championship. VeeKay is the first driver named to the championship-winning Indy Lights team line-up.

VeeKay , from Hoofddorp, Netherlands, will continue his run with Juncos Racing after a very successful season capturing the 2018 Indy Pro 2000 (formerly Pro Mazda) Championship, recording 10 podiums, six poles, and seven wins. By claiming the title, VeeKay was awarded a Mazda scholarship and will make his move up to the final step of the Road to Indy ladder joining the Indy Lights series.

“I really feel at home with Juncos Racing, “said VeeKay. “I think I can improve my performance and get better with this team, and that is extremely important for my next goal, the IndyCar Series. It’s also great to see that the team work extremely hard for me. Last season they proved that, after a setback, they can come back better than ever before and that they do everything they can to be successful. The 2015 and 2017 Indy Lights titles prove that. I’m really looking forward to working together with Ricardo and his team again and to being successful together. I would also like to thank Jumbo, La Place and KNAF Talent First for their ongoing support. I’m also really proud to represent Mazda in Indy Lights next season as their last scholarship winner.”

VeeKay began testing the Dallara IL-15 with Juncos Racing at the 2018 Chris Griffis Test and recently completed the Road to Indy Open Test at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Team Owner Ricardo Juncos said, “We are thrilled to have Rinus continue with our team for the 2019 Indy Lights season after an extremely successful year in Pro Mazda. Rinus has proved that he is ready for the next level of the Road to Indy through his work ethic both on and off the track. The level of training he goes through and the time he commits to developing himself as a driver shows the dedication and passion he has to take his career to the next level. We developed a great relationship throughout the 2018 season and look forward to carrying that momentum into next year. I would like to thank Rinus, his family, and sponsors for their commitment to Juncos Racing.”

The 2019 Indy Lights Championship kicks off March 8-10 with Rounds 1 and 2 on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Key Step on the Road to Indy to be Rebranded for 2019

Key Step on the Road to Indy to be Rebranded for 2019

PALMETTO, Fla. – The middle step on the world-renowned Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires open-wheel driver development ladder is being rebranded as the Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires in time for the 2019 season.

Fitting in between the entry-level Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires – which provides the final stepping stone to the IndyCar Series –  Indy Pro 2000 will continue to build on a strong foundation which was further strengthened this year following the introduction of the state-of-the-art Tatuus PM-18.

Originally debuting as Star Mazda in 1991, then reformed as Pro Mazda in 2013 when Andersen Promotions took over the helm after the previous administration ceased operations, the series has served as a vital training ground for many of today’s open-wheel stars during its 28-year history.

Current IndyCar drivers Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe, Spencer Pigot and Graham Rahal all established their credentials in either Star Mazda or Pro Mazda, while recently crowned champion Rinus VeeKay is poised to move up one more step on the ladder when he enters the Indy Lights fray for 2019.

Indy Pro 2000 competitors next season will vie for a champion’s purse valued at $596,700 to progress to Indy Lights and follow in their footsteps, with the aim of graduating to the IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.

“We are indebted to the tremendous support of Mazda over the past nine years, but now, as the Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires legacy continues to grow, we feel the time is right to introduce a new look as we head into a new season,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions.

“The Tatuus USF-17 has been hugely successful from the time it was introduced in USF2000 two years ago, and since the same chassis – along with some considerable enhancements – forms the basis for the PM-18, it makes sense to incorporate this into the name evolution while also strengthening our ties to INDYCAR. We are excited to roll-out the new Indy Pro 2000 branding over the course of the next few months.”

The rebranding will go into effect immediately on the Indy Pro 2000 website (indypro2000.com) and social media platforms with the new handle of @IndyPro2000 on both Twitter and Facebook. Instagram will feature all three series under Road To Indy Official.

The Indy Pro 2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires slate of 16 races at nine venues will kick off March 9/10 on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., where all three levels of the Road to Indy will be in action. The Road to Indy annual Spring Training will take place one week prior on March 2/3 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Coverage of Indy Pro 2000 will continue to include global live streaming of all practice, qualifying and race events on indypro2000.com, indycar.com, RoadToIndy.TV and the Road to Indy TV App. In 2016, Road to Indy became the first American racing series with a dedicated broadcast channel on demand. The channel is available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Roku in addition to an official App on Xbox One.

November 27, 2018 – After announcing in mid-August plans to contest the 2019 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, Miller Vinatieri Motorsports went immediately to work to secure a second driver to join Jack William Miller as teammate. Today the team is proud to announce Brazilian Eduardo Barrichello will pilot a Miller Vinatieri Motorsports USF-17 for his debut season in the Road to Indy series.

“We are very pleased to have Eduardo join the MVM family,” notes team owner and three-time Indianapolis 500 starter Jack Miller. “Eduardo is son of former Formula 1 star Rubens Barrichello, and their family bond is unmistakable. It rings true having my son as a second generation driver, so I am confident Eduardo and the whole Barrichello family will fit perfectly into our operation. We will be running our first season in the USF2000 ranks, but we have put together an excellent and experienced crew and engineer, making a great platform for Eduardo as he begins his march up the Road to Indy ladder.”

Eduardo will enter 2019 on the heels of his first full season in open-wheel racing. Competing in the US F4 division as a rookie in 2018, the Orlando, Florida resident had a strong first season in cars and looks for more in 2019. A star in the karting ranks as well, the young Barrichello secured numerous high-profile victories in his six-year kart career before turning his focus to car racing.

“I am excited to join Miller Vinatieri Motorsports and the USF2000 program in 2019,” explains the younger Barrichello. “The Road to Indy program is something that I have followed throughout karting, and to finally be able to take part in it is something special. The plan is to get lots of testing under my belt before the first race of the season, but I can tell you that I am already counting down the days to St. Pete.”

“I met Jack during the F4 season and we had an instant connection,” adds Rubens Barrichello, trackside at Sebring International Raceway where his son, Eduardo, is getting experience behind the wheel of the USF-17. “Jack has a love and passion for the sport, similar as I do, and combined that with the love for our kids, it made perfect sense. We are very excited to enter the USF2000 Series and Road to Indy program as it the perfect next step for Eduardo and his racing career.”

NFL all-time leading points scorer and current Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri also is excited to have Barrichello join the team.
“Not only am I big fan of Jack William, I have also been a fan of Rubens throughout his career,” explains Vinatieri. “I am hoping to get to a lot of races in the future and lend my hand in helping grow a successful program. To have Jack William and Eduardo as teammates, as well as a strong team in place around them, I can’t wait to follow their progress and improvement as they continue to march up the motorsports ladder.”
Miller Vinatieri Motorsports has plans for an extensive winter testing program in advance of the 2019 season, which officially gets underway in March at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix.

Andersen Promotions Announces 2019 Road to Indy Schedule

Andersen Promotions Announces 2019 Road to Indy Schedule

PALMETTO, Fla. (September 25, 2018) – Andersen Promotions today announced the 2019 Road To Indy Presented by Cooper Tires schedule which will feature 12 events in support of the Verizon IndyCar Series including a new venue with the addition of Circuit of The Americas and a return to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the season finale of all three levels of the globally recognized driver development platform.

Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship calendars all will feature a mix of ovals, street circuits and road courses to properly train drivers to move up the ladder system with the ultimate goal of reaching IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500.

Following an August 1 announcement by INDYCAR and Andersen Promotions, the future of Indy Lights is bright, strengthened by a five-year plan to increase team and driver participation for the final stepping stone to the top level. In addition to an increased champion’s purse of $1.1 million built on a three-race IndyCar program including the 2020 Indianapolis 500, a reduction in entrant budgets was unveiled alongside revised INDYCAR driver licensing guidelines and an expansion of the IndyCar testing program.

Indy Lights has become the backbone of IndyCar with 25 of the 33 starters in the 2018 Indianapolis 500 as graduates, including its last five champions. BN Racing recently announced its plans to expand to Indy Lights in 2019, and Team Pelfrey will relocate from its Florida base to Indianapolis to focus on returning with a full-season campaign next year. Interest in the series is high and additional announcements will be made in the coming weeks. In the interim, all eyes have been on series champion Patricio O’Ward and vice champion and Freedom 100 winner Colton Herta, who made their IndyCar Series debut recently at Sonoma Raceway and have been confirmed to the new Harding Steinbrenner Racing team for the full 2019 IndyCar season.

With the highly successful debut of the Tatuus PM-18 this season – finalizing the revitalization of all three levels with state-of-the-art equipment – both Pro Mazda and USF2000 look poised for strong fields in 2019. Reigning USF2000 team champions Pabst Racing has already announced its expansion into Pro Mazda with a two-car effort, and new teams Jay Howard Driver Development and Miller Vinatieri Motorsports will enter the USF2000 fray. ArmsUp Motorsports is also looking at the potential of an expansion to Pro Mazda or the potential for a third car in USF2000.

Details on the full prize packages for each series – including the champion’s scholarships to advance to Pro Mazda and Indy Lights – are currently being finalized and will be announced in the near future.

Prior to kicking off the 2019 season, two events remain on the current calendar. Following the conclusion of the eighth annual Chris Griffis Memorial Open Test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend, a second Open Test has been scheduled at the Homestead-Miami Speedway road course in Homestead, Fla., on December 3/4, receiving accolades throughout the paddock. The third annual Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout featuring 20 champions of junior open-wheel and karting series from North and South America as well as Europe, Asia, Australasia and Africa will take place in December with venue details and the judging panel to be announced this week.

The traditional Road to Indy annual Spring Training will see all levels return to Homestead-Miami Speedway, on March 2-4, 2019 for three days of on-track action on the 2.21-mile road course. The first two rungs – Pro Mazda and USF2000 –  will take to the track on Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, with a total of four hours of testing time. Indy Lights will have its own dedicated day of action on Monday, March 4, comprising five hours of track time.

Spring Training will include the invaluable Road to Indy Driver Summit Program. Activities include a comprehensive competition presentation, media training – which most recently was hosted by prominent authorities and noted broadcasters Leigh Diffey and Kevin Lee – and unique presentations on the sixth annual Cooper Tires social media hashtag program and Road to Indy TV, which also returns for its sixth season.

The 2019 Indy Lights calendar will feature an 18-race, 10-event schedule comprised of six road course, two street circuit and two oval events highlighted by the crown jewel in the schedule – the Freedom 100 on Carb Day for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500. Coverage can be found on NBC Sports Gold as part of the INDYCAR package as well as Apple TV, Amazon Fire, Roku, Xbox One, Road To Indy TV and the Road To Indy TV App.

“Assembling next year’s schedule was the hardest it has been in recent years and that’s because we have too many options, which is a nice problem to have,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “We want to be cognizant of team budgets and also have a well-rounded platform for our drivers alongside key markets for series, team and driver sponsors and partners. I am happy with our final blend of events and want to thank all of the promoters for working with us. Portland was a great event this year, and we look forward to returning to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and adding what will be a tremendous outing at Circuit of The Americas.

“We have a great platform in place but we always want to be better, and we will be looking at ways to improve for 2019. Adding Jonny Baker as our new Series Development Director was a first step. We are also working hard on the sponsorship side for a new partner to entitle the Road to Indy. There really is no off-season in racing and this one will be busier than usual for everyone at Andersen Promotions, but we welcome and look forward to the challenge and the opportunities that lie ahead. We have the full support of Jay Frye and his team at INDYCAR, and I feel the Road to Indy will be back stronger than ever next year.”

LEGACY AUTOSPORT SIGNS ALEX BARON FOR USF2000 ROAD TO INDY IN 2019

LEGACY AUTOSPORT SIGNS ALEX BARON FOR USF2000 ROAD TO INDY IN 2019

French driver to be re-united with Meyer and Metalloid for run at series championship

LEBANON, IN (September 20, 2018) – Just over two weeks from the official introduction of the new team, Legacy Autosport is thrilled to announce that French driver Alex Baron will join the squad as its team anchor for the 2019 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship.  Baron will again work with team owner Mike Meyer, who was Alex’s chief mechanic with Swan-RJB Motorsports last season during a shortened season that resulted in a pair of impressive wins.  Baron will be in the Legacy Autosport USF-17 this weekend at the Chris Griffis Memorial Test on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, where he will be joined by American Andre Castro.

“It has been the fulfillment of a dream with the formation of Legacy Autosport,” admitted Meyer. “Now to be able to sign Alex for the 2019 season, I couldn’t’ be more excited. Alex has so much talent and the passion to win. I had been lucky enough to work with him back in 2014 when he ran just a few races in Indy Lights and won, and again this year as his chief mechanic to win two races in such a short season. I am excited to get things started at the Chris Griffis Memorial test and lay the groundwork for Alex to fulfill his dream of one day being an IndyCar champion.”

Baron has a great deal of racing experience, beginning in karts before moving on to win the Formula 4 championship in France in 2012. The 23-year-old made his Road to Indy debut in 2013 in USF2000, winning in his debut season at both Laguna Seca and Houston. He then moved to Indy Lights with Belardi Auto Racing in 2014 and scored a win in Toronto. Baron then remained in France for two years until he returned to the United States in 2017.  Baron showed his outright pace this year, and he and Meyer are focused on picking up where they left off.  The entire team is excited to have Alex under the tent, include the team’s sponsor Metalloid.

“We are very happy to have Alex back for the full season in 2019,” commented an enthusiastic Fred Edwards, the team’s ambassador to Metalloid. “We were only able to do a half season with Alex in 2018 and we won two races with him, including the INDYCAR Grand Prix, which meant a lot to my brother Tom and myself, growing up in and around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We are looking for a teammate for Alex, as he will bring a lot of mentoring skills for that second seat at Legacy Autosport. We are going for the championship next year and I feel with the signing of Alex we are well on the road to obtaining it.”

INDY LIGHTS RECAP

SEASON BY NUMBERS.

For the first time in nine years, Andretti Autosport has returned back home again in Indiana as Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series champions, marking the third championship title in team history. Andretti Autosport driver Patricio O’Ward clinched the driver championship with two races remaining adding his name to the team’s previous two championships with Raphael Matos in 2008 and J.R. Hildebrand in 2009.

This team’s success started early as rookie driver O’Ward would bring home the team’s first Indy Lights win of the season after Race 1 on the Streets of St. Petersburg. Continuing through the 17-race season, the Indy Lights stable would collectively bring home 14 poles, 14 wins, 33 top-3 finishes and lead 515 of 655 laps. The team ends the season with a total of 49 Indy Lights series race wins.

“For me, this season was all about creating a name for myself and enjoying what I love to do most, racing. It’s hard to think of a year where I have had more fun racing cars and going fast! This season taught me a lot and some weekends went better than others, that’s for sure, and different situations really tested my knowledge and patience throughout the season. I couldn’t be more grateful of the opportunity that  was presented to me by the whole Andretti Autosport family, and for that I am truly very lucky. There are really good things coming up in the next few years, and I couldn’t be more pumped to get going!”

“I can’t thank the Andretti-Steinbrenner Racing team enough for this season. The team dominated the year and the No. 98 car was great all year long. My engineer Doug [Zister] and mechanics Carlos [Fernandes], Rick [Hurford] and Sean [Birmingham] did an amazing job all season. It has been a fun two years of my life that I have no regrets about. I’m looking forward to next season – I’m still trying to put stuff together, but the goal is to run full time in the INDYCAR Series and hopefully we can make that happen.”

“I think this season was great for my overall growth as a driver – especially with the momentum that we carried the last couple race weekends. The last half of the season I was able to get on the podium again, win for the first time in the series and start from pole for the last race of the season. Unfortunately, Portland didn’t really go how I wanted it to with the crash at the start of the race, but there have been a lot of positives to carry into the offseason. I think if we tweak some things during our time off, we will be able to come back next season and make a strong run for the championship.”

“It was a tough season for us with a lot of ups and downs. We did have some high points – performed really well on road courses and the month of May was really good to us. Coming into this season, the goal was to make a run for the championship with this being my third year competing in the Indy Lights series with Andretti Autosport. Although we didn’t capitalize on that goal, there are still some positives to take away, and I’m looking forward to seeing how things shape up for the 2019 season.”

ROOKIE TO SERIES CHAMPION.

It was an unbelievable, stand-out rookie season for driver of the No. 27 machine, Patricio O’Ward.  O’Ward showed he was a force to be reckoned with as his fast, strategic driving named him a championship contender all season.
In 17 rounds of competition, O’Ward completed 654 of 655 laps, seeing 367 of those laps from the front of the field. Finding himself on the podium a total of 13 times this season, O’Ward collected nine poles and nine wins to earn the titles Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Series Champion as well as Rookie of the Year.

FREEDOM 100.

Round 7 of Indy Lights competition took place on the iconic oval at the infamous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race was action-packed with 20 lead changes involving five different drivers for 100 miles. Unable to finish the Freedom 100 last year, Colton Herta, starting from nearly the back of the pack, moved up the field five positions and led the race for 10 laps chasing the checkered flag across the yard of bricks to victory.

While only leading three laps, Patricio O’Ward, skillfully placed his No. 27 Mazda into top-three contention – just missing the top spot to teammate Colton Herta by .0281 of a second. O’Ward collected his fourth top-three finish of the season.  After starting from pole, Dalton Kellett went into race day ready to drive his way to Victory Lane. Having led 17 laps of the 40-lap race, Kellett battled for the win all afternoon before falling back a couple positions to earn his third, third-place finish at the Freedom 100.

Sophomore driver, Ryan Norman, just missed starting his second Freedom 100 from the front row. In an attempt to save tires, Norman laid back early in the race. After some strategic driving, Norman moved up the field and ran as high as P2 finding himself in contention for a top-three finish. It was an intense battle to the checkered but ultimately, Norman ended his day from fifth.

DON’T STOP BELIEVING.

Sophomore driver, Ryan Norman had a slow start to the season – having only captured one podium finish during the first stint. Not surprising, that didn’t stop the Ohio-native from believing in his own potential as the young driver would put the pieces together for a spectacular second half of the season. Norman drove his No. 48 Journey Mazda to two more podium finishes with a third-place finish in Race 1 on the Streets of Toronto and another at his home track in Mid-Ohio. Norman would finish his season with one race win at Gateway Motorsports Park and start on pole for the final race of the season at Portland International Raceway.

DRIVEN BY STEM.

After collecting his first Indy Lights career pole for the Freedom 100 and driving the No. 28 K-Line Mazda to two podium finishes, Canadian driver, Dalton Kellett, found a way to combine his love for racing with his passion for STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics] by becoming an Ambassador for Ten80 Education Partners Driving STEM.

Leveraging his platform as an athlete to promote STEM education and ultimately influence kids to pursue their dreams in STEM fields, Ten80 Education joined Kellett as an Associate Sponsor at the driver’s home race on the Streets of Toronto, in an effort to bring STEM awareness to open-wheel racing. The pairing hopes to maintain a relationship into the future as Kellett introduces Ten80 to the INDYCAR market, promoting STEM and engaging young fans with their programs.

ROYAL PURPLE SLICKEST PASS AWARD.

At the end of the season, drivers from each series of the Road to Indy Program have the chance to win the Royal Purple $5,000 “Slickest Pass” award. Teams submitted video clips of each driver of their “slickest pass” to date, and a Royal Purple voting committee selected the Top-3 slickest pass videos.  The top-3 selected were then shared via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and fans voted via social media to determine this season’s winner. Patricio O’Ward and Ryan Norman were among the three drivers chosen for the award, and it was Mexican-driver O’Ward finishing the season with the slickest pass.
