Barber Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda Race #1 – recap and results

Pro Mazda Logo

Pato O’Ward and Aaron Telitz finished on the top two steps of the podium for the third straight Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire race in 2016, with O’Ward taking advantage of a late yellow flag to make a daring move on Telitz in Turn 14 and 15.

Telitz was caught of guard by O’Ward’ daring move and thought they teammates would get together, but O’Ward made the pass stick.

O’Ward, who is confirmed in the No. 80 seat only through this weekend, is searching for funding to extend his championship chase to the next round at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May during the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

He told TSO that he really hopes that these wins will help him add more races to his program.

The 16 year-old Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire sophomore now has two victories, five podiums and also his scored the quickest lap of the race, the fourth time he has accomplished that.

Grist said it’s no secret that Team Pelfrey has the edge right now, but that Juncos Racing is working very hard to get caught up.

After qualifying on a damp to drying track yesterday, the ten drivers took the green flag in absolutely perfect conditions. Telitz was able to hold the lead through the first five corners, but it was O’Ward who was on the move. The Monterey, Mexico native, who started fourth was able get by Weiron Tan in the first complex of corners and out broke Garett Grist into Charlotte’s Web to take over the second spot.

On the run down to Turn 8, Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammates Nico Jamin and Jake Eidson got together. Both drivers were able to keep going and dropped to the 8th and 9th positions.  Jamin recovered to finish sixth and Eidson added one more spot to finish eighth.

Juncos Racing’s rookie Jake Parsons who started just behind Jamin and Eidson sustained some front wing damage and had to pit to fix damage.

End of the first lap the running order was: Telitz, O’Ward, Grist, Tan, Will Owen, Nicolas Dapero, Jorge Cevallos, Jamin, Eidson and Parsons.

One quarter of the race through the 40 minute race, The Rice Lake Weighing Systems sponsored No. 82 of Telitz held a 0.4 second lead over O’Ward, who was keeping up the pressure on his Team Pelfrey teammate. Grist was a further 6 seconds back in third, with Tan and Owen making up the remainder of the top five.

The best battle on the track at this point was for the final spot on the podium with the threesome of Grist, Tan and Owen covered by only 1.1 seconds.

Telitz held a 1.1 second over O’Ward when the crossed flags were shown on Lap 15. Grist, Tan and Owen were still still nose to tail in the battle for the final spot of the podium.

On Lap 16, the first yellow flag of the race flew when Jake Parsons had an incident on the back side of the track. The Smart Mind Institute No. 00 buried into the barriers and the safety team had to take some time to make everything was put back in place and safe before setting the drivers loose again.

The field went back to green with just under six minutes to go in the race, and O’Ward made an unsuccessful attempt to pass Telitz under braking at Turn 5, but was able to get the pass done later in the lap.

This is the third victory at Barber Motorsports Park for Team Pelfrey. O’Ward joins a pair of Jacks who have also won in Birmingham. Verizon IndyCar Series regular Jack Hawksworth won a race in 2012, and current GP3 pilot Jack Aitken won a race during the 2015 edition of Cooper Tires Winterfest.

The final second and final Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire race of the weekend will be on Sunday at 11:15am (CT).

With a wet 2.3-Mile, 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park Road Course, the first drivers on track for the Pro Mazda qualifying session were outfitted with treaded wet weather Cooper Tires. However, in an what looked like an interesting strategy call at the time, the three Team Pelfrey drivers sat on pit road with slick tires until the last half of the 20 minute session, when they rolled out on track with the Cooper Tire slicks!

It looked like an absolutely crazy call by Team Pelfrey principal Nigel Tuckey, but within four laps it was the triple threat trio from Team Pelfrey that jumped to the top of the time sheet.

It appeared that the session would end with Telitz, Tan and O’Ward staring the race in the first three spots, but Garett Grist decided to join the party in the last minute-and-a-half.

Grist was able to grab the top spot on his second last lap of the session, but Telitz went just a little bit quicker the next time by. The two drivers traded the top spot one more time, but it was rookie Telitz who will start on pole for the second straight race who just topped Canadian Grist by a scant 0.0136 seconds.

Delayed for 27 minutes by heavy rain and a thunderstorm, Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire qualifying began at 2:52pm on a very wet track.

Halfway through the session the top five were: Garett Grist, Will Owen, Nico Jamin, Jake Eidson and Jorge Cevallos.

With eight minutes left in the session the remainder of the drivers began to come to the pits to put on a mix of sticker and scuffed Cooper Tire slicks.

Barber Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda practice session #2 update – 9:20am

    Pro Mazda Logo

Team Pelfrey’s triple threat trio of Pato O’Ward, Aaron Telitz, and Weiron Tan ran 1-2-3 at the final Pro Mazda practice before qualifying. The three drivers who also dominated spring training in March and testing/practice yesterday were only separated by 0.2 seconds. Qualifying

The second official practice for the pair of Mazda North American Operations Presents the Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Alabama Cooper Tires began at 8:45am under partly sunny skies with an ambient temperature of 69F. The track temperature when the 30 minute session began was 76F.

The Team Pelfrey trio of O’Ward, Telitz and Tan were the top three at the half-way point of practice, and were followed by the Juncos Racing trio of Garett Grist, Will Owen, and Jake Parsons.

The session was green for the entire 30 minutes.

The majority of the drivers set their quickest lap early in the session with the fifth lap being the most popular circuit for a flyer. That is something to keep in mind for qualifying.

The track record of 1:20.249 was set by current Verizon IndyCar Series driver Spencer Pigot during qualifying for the 2014 edition of Cooper Tires Winterfest in February 2014. With a green track and warmer temperatures, the track record will likely be safe for another year.

    Practice #2 timesheet:

    Rank Name FTime

    1 Pato O’Ward 1:21.055

    2 Aaron Telitz 1:21.065

Barber Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire preview and today’s results

    Pro Mazda Logo

The Team Pelfrey threesome of Weiron Tan, Pato O’Ward and Aaron Telitz head to the Mazda North American Operations Presents the Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Alabama Cooper Tires double-header, the third and fourth rounds of the 2016 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire championship, as the overwhelming favorites at Barber Motorsports Park.

    Why?

    1. Sophomore O’Ward and rookie Telitz split the pair of races in St. Petersburg and sit one-two in the fight for the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship that the series champion will receive. Rice Lake, Wisconsin native Telitz currently trails the 16 year-old O’Ward by a scant two points, on the virtue of O’Ward scoring more bonus points in the opening round. Tan, a 20 year-old sophomore pilot, sits in third in the championship after a mixed weekend in St. Petersburg.
    2. During the spring training testing this past March, the trio went one-two-three with Telitz leading O’Ward by only two-hundreths of a second, with Tan only another two-tenths of a second behind.
    3. All three drivers have had success on the 2.3-Mile, 17-Turn Road Course in the past. In four races at Barber Motorsports Park, Tan has scored two wins and one second while starting on the front row in all four starts.  O’Ward has made two starts in Birmingham, Alabama and came home in fifth and seventh. Between the regular season and Winterfest, Telitz has made nine Barber starts. His impressive line includes, one win, three podiums, and seven top fives.

Gunning for the Team Pelfrey trio will be a foursome from Juncos Racing, a duo from Cape Motorsports with /WTR, and a single from JDC Motorsports.

Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomores Nico Jamin and Jake Eidson will be looking to join current Indy Lights drivers Scott Hargrove and Neil Alberico as Barber Motorsports Park Pro Mazda winners for the St. Petersburg, Florida based team.

Both 20 year-olds, Jamin and Eidson have combined for 18 career starts and seven podiums in Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda competition at Barber Motorsports Park, but will need to improve on the sixth and 10th best times in the spring training testing.

Juncos Racing leads all teams in wins (4), poles (4) and podiums (10) at Barber Motorsports Park and will be looking to get back on pace after an uncharacteristically “off” weekend in St. Petersburg.

Pre-season favorite, Garett Grist, who just turned 21 years-old will need a solid weekend to get back in the chase for the 2016 championship. The Grimsby, Ontario native has eight previous starts at the Birmingham, Alabama track and has not yet finished outside the top 8.

Between USF2000 and Pro Mazda, Owen has nine Barber starts with one pole, one top five and two top tens in the two 2015 races.

Juncos Racing rookies Nicolas Dapero and Jake Parsons do not have Barber Race experience, but both had successful spring training tests. Argentinian Dapero had the fourth quickest lap-time during the early March test, while Australian Parson was the seventh quickest.

The final Pro Mazda entry is Jorge Cevallos, who after a successful return to racing at St. Petersburg, announced that he would be contesting the full Pro Mazda season with JDC Motorsports.

An FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy who finished third in the 2013 Protyre Formula Renault UK Series, Cevallos missed the past season-and-a-half of racing after undergoing surgery for Ulcerative Colitis. The 21 year-old, who is backed by Escuderia Telmex, Visit Baja California, Caliente Casinos, llantas Tersa and Bell Helmets is focused on regaining his strength and stamina and very well could be contending for top fives in the near future.

“The whole JDC MotorSports team is really motivated for Barber,” said Cevallos. For me, personally, being back on the race track at St. Pete felt like a win, and to come out of it with a double top-10 gave us a lot of motivation working towards Barber. We’ve worked hard and hope to turn a few more heads early in the season.”

What TSO will be watching for this weekend:

    • Can Cape Motorsports with /WTR and Juncos Racing make some progress and find the necessary pace to stop the Team Pelfrey train that has been on a role since the beginning of 2015.
    • Tan has been very, very quick at Barber Motorsports Park in the past, and this weekend provides him with a great opportunity to eat into his teammates championship lead.
    • O’Ward is only confirmed through this weekend; can he continue the momentum he found in St. Pete and extend his season into May at Indianapolis.
    • Will Juncos Racing and engineer Peter Dempsey be able to find what ailed them during testing in March. The team has had previous success at the track in past.

    Thursday testing and practice

The ten car field took to Barber Motorsports Park on Thursday, April, 21 for two promotor test session and one official practice session.

Leading the way during the two test sessions was Aaron Telitz. He was followed closely by his teammate and championship leader O’Ward. Juncos Racing’s Garett Grist, Jake Parsons, and Will Owen made up the rest of the top 5. The biggest surprise? Championship favorite Weiron Tan could only manage the eighth quickest time.

The lone official practice session was run under damp conditions and only seven cars took to the track with the Team Pelfrey trio of Aaron Telitz, Pato O’Ward and Aaron Telitz sitting out the session.

Due to the moist track, the seven drivers only turned a total of 46 laps with JDC Motorsports newest full-season signee, Jorge Cevallos leading the way.
