Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire – 2016 season and St. Pete preview

What the 2016 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire field lacks for in quantity, it sure makes up for in quality, with at least eight potential race winners in the field.

2015 champion Santiago Urrutia and runner-up Neil Alberico have both moved up the ladder to Indy Lights, but the third (Garett Grist), fourth (Weiron Tan), sixth (Pato O’Ward) and seventh (Will Owen) place finishers have all returned for another shot at the title. That quartet of veterans will be joined by the trio of Nico Jamin, Jake Eidson, and Aaron Telitz, who took the top three positions in the 2015 USF2000 championship. Also joining the veterans will be three talented newcomers to Mazda Road To Indy, Jake Parsons, Jorge Cevallos and Nicolas Dapero.

TSO fully expects the majority of those drivers to challenge for a victory at some point in 2016, and at the very least, score at least one podium.

This year’s pair of Allied Building Products Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will be the 10th and 11th Pro Mazda races that have been contested on the Streets of St. Petersburg. Previous winners include: current IndyCar drivers Jack Hawksworth and Matthew Brabham, and current Indy Lights driver Neil Alberico, who won both races one year ago.

Current Pro Mazda teams with wins at on the Streets Of St. Petersburg include: Juncos Racing (4 victories), Cape Motorsports with /WTR (2 victories), Andretti Autosport (2 victories), and Team Pelfrey (1 victory).

Does winning the season opening race at St. Petersburg matter? Maybe, a little. Of the four times that Pro Mazda has opened up on the shores of Tampa Bay, a winner during the inaugural weekend has gone on to win the season championship twice.

TSO’s (Steve) predictions:

  • Number of different race winners: 5
  • Number of drivers with a chance to win the title heading to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in September: 4
  • Champion: Garett Grist
  • Rookie of the Year: Aaron Telitz

Team Pelfrey

The Palmetto, Florida based Team Pelfrey heads into the 2016 Pro Mazda Championship searching for their first consecutive third overall driver’s championship. Current A.J. Foyt Racing IndyCar driver Jack Hawksworth won the Nigel Tuckey run squad their first championship in 2012, and current Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian Indy Lights pilot Santiago Urrutia is the reigning champion. The teams three announced drivers, Aaron Telitz, Pato O’Ward and Weiron Tan, topped the recent spring-training time sheets at Barber Motorsports Park. Rookie Telitz scored the quickest time, but the trio were all within three-tenths of a second of each other.

Pro Mazda sophomore Weiron Tan (No. 81) should provide the team with their best title hopes. The speedy Formula 3 veteran from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia scored six poles, four wins, and six podiums on the way to a fourth place Pro Mazda Championship finish in 2015.  Tan, a 20 year-old, enters the season as one of the two prohibitive favorites, but will need cut down on his mistakes in 2016 if he wants to win the title and a shot at an Indy Lights ride.

Hailing from Monterey, Mexico, sophomore Pato O’Ward (No. 80) is only signed for the first two events at St. Petersburg and Barber Motorsports Park. The 16 year-old had an impressive rookie season in Pro Mazda, showing impressive pace and standing on the podium three times. If O’Ward can find the budget to complete the entire season, he should be in contention for wins on a regular basis.

Aaron Telitz (No. 82) will be a Pro Mazda rookie in 2016, but the Birchwood, Wisconsin native will be no stranger to any of the tracks that the series races on. In two seasons of USF2000 action, Telitz, who has an affiliation with Rising Star Racing had two wins, and 17 podiums on the way to  fourth (2014) and third (2015) place championship finishes. Telitz, a 24 year-old, led the recent Pro Mazda spring training testing at Barber Motorsports Park, and his driving style seems to suit the higher downforce and horsepower of the Star chassis and Mazda Renesis poweplant. Don’t be surprised to see him contending for podiums and a steady season could see him in contention for the championship when the calendar turns to September.

Juncos Racing

Juncos Racing logo

In recent years, Team Pelfrey’s biggest rival for the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire championship has been Juncos Racing. The Brownsburg, Indiana squad is led by team owner Ricardo Juncos and Pro Mazda technical director Peter Dempsey. Juncos goes on the hunt for their third Pro Mazda driver’s championship with two veteran (Garett Grist & Will Owen) and two rookie drivers (Nicolas Dapero and Jake Parsons).

Garett “GG” Grist (No. 5), enters into his third Pro Mazda season as one of two favorites (along with Tan) to win the title and Mazda Racing advancement scholarship that goes along with it. Still only 20 years old, Grist begins his fourth Mazda Road To Indy season with a total of seven poles, six wins and 10 podiums in 44 career starts. Hailing from Grimsby, Ontario, Grist was blistering hot in the second half of the 2015 season, standing on the top step of the podium three times and starting on the front row of the final seven races. Grist’s experience, super quick pace, and relationship with engineer Dempsey should translate into a run at the title.

After a mediocre rookie USF2000 campaign, Will Owen (No. 23) was the most improved Mazda Road To Indy driver in 2016. The 20 year-old Texas Christian University Student consistently qualified in the top half of the grid and had three podiums on the way to a seventh place championship finish. The Castle Rock, Colorado resident recently competed in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand and comes to St. Petersburg in race shape. Expect Owen to continue to improve his race pace and to continually hang around the top five all season long.

Somewhat surprisingly, rookie Nicolas Dapero (No. 31) was the quickest of the four Juncos Racing drivers during testing at Barber Motorsports Park last week.  As a Juncos Racing development driver, the 17 year old comes into 2016 with a ton of Pro Mazda testing time. Dapero was an outstanding karter in his home country of Argentina, who’s experience in formula cars includes Formula 3 Brazil, Formula Renault 2.0 Argentina and a trip to New Zealand with teammate Owen for the Toyota Racing Series. If testing is any indication, Dapero will have plenty of pace, but will also be prone to making mistakes. If he can limit his mistakes, he should be in contention for some podium finishes.

Melbourne, Australia native Jake Parsons (No. 00), could very well play the Pro Mazda sleeper role that Santiago Urrutia did one year ago. The 21 year-old makes the move to the U.S.A. after an early career in Australia and Asia. Parsons formula car experience includes: a) Formula Ford (where he won the 2015 Bathurst event, setting the track record in the process). b) FIA Formula BMW (AsiaCup) (where he won the 2014 championship), and c) Formula Masters China (where he has four wins and a second place championship finish). In testing, Parsons has been on a very similar pace to experienced teammates Grist and Owen.

Cape Motorsports with /WTR

Cape Motorsports with /WTR logo

Dominic and Nicolas Cape have built a powerhouse USF2000 team, and  while the Pro Mazda side of the house has yet to win a driver’s championship, the two year old outfit has been “oh, so close”. Drivers Scott Hargrove (2014) and Neil Alberico (2015) both went into their respective Pro Mazda season finales with a chance to win the crown, but both fell just short, coming home in second. The task of bringing home a Pro Mazda championship to the St. Petersburg, Florida team will fall to two 20 year-old rookies, reigning USF2000 champion Nico Jamin and 2015 USF2000 vice champion Jake Eidson.

Nico Jamin (No. 2) won an impressive 12 poles and 10 races on the way to collecting the coveted Mazda Racing advancement scholarship for winning the USF2000 Championship. The Rouen, France native recently had the fifth quickest time in spring training at Barber Motorsports Park. In USF2000, Jamin was the master of maximizing his laps on cold Cooper Tire slicks and once he figures out how to do that with the Pro Mazda rubber, he should have his Soul Red machine contending for podiums from the drop of the green flag.

If Jake Eidson (No. 3) had a nickname, it might very well be “Mr. Podium”. Entering his third full-time Mazda Road To Indy season, Eidson has scored a podium in 65% (22 of 34 races) of his USF2000 contests. His brand of mistake free consistency works very well in a larger field, but with the smaller Pro Mazda field in 2016, the Destin, Florida resident might need to get more aggressive to keep up his stunning podium pace.

JDC Motorsports

JDC Motorsports logo

2007 (Dane Cameron) and 2011 (Tristan Vautier) championship team JDC Motorsports will return to Pro Mazda competition with a one-car effort in 2016. Jorge Cevallos will wheel the No. 21 for the Savage, Minnesota based squad.

After missing the majority of the 2014 and 2015 racing season after having surgery for Ulcerative colitis Jorge Cevallos (No. 21) will be utilizing the social media hashtag #backontrack to chronicle his inspiring return to racing. Born in Tijuana, Mexico and part of the Escuderia Telmex program, Cevallos’ last full year racing was in 2013, when he finished third in the Protyre Formula Renault UK series, just behind fellow Pro Mazda driver Weiron Tan. It will likely take Cevallos a few rounds to complete shaking the rust off of two years of inactivity and get back into race-shape, but if past success is any indication, he should be competing near the pointy end of the field by the middle of the season.

National Class

Returning to the National Class (formerly Expert Class) are rivals Jay Horak (M1 Racing No. 37) and Bobby Eberle (World Speed Motorsports No. 13).  Horak (2013) and Eberle (2014 & 2015) have waged an entertaining battle the last three years, and will continue into 2016.

TSO expects that there will be more National Class entries at the natural terrain road-courses such as Barber Motorsports Park, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Grand Prix Circuit, Road America, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Monday Update #3 – final USF2000 and Pro Mazda sessions – 4:45pm

With many teams holding onto their final set of tires for the final session of the two day test, times in the second Monday session were not as fast as they were in the first session. A number of drivers used the session to simulate race length runs.

For the fourth of five sessions, it was a Team Pelfrey driver leading the way when Pro Mazda rookie Aaron Telitz led his third session of the test. He was followed by Nicolas Dapero (Juncos Racing), Garett Grist (Juncos Racing), Pato O’Ward (Team Pelfrey) and Weiron Tan (Team Pelfrey).

Once again the field was quite tightly packed, with the top eight drivers within one second of Telitz.

After sniffing the top of the time-sheets in the first five sessions, 22 year-old Ayla Agren led the sixth and final Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda. The sophomore pilot was joined in the top five by Parker Thompson (Cape Motorsports with /WTR), Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing), Lucas Kohl (John Cummiskey Racing) and Garth Rickards (Pabst Racing).

The sixth and final USF2000 session was a disjointed affair with two red flags interrupting the driver’s rhythms.

The first incident involved rookie JDC Motorsports driver Tazio Ottis, who had scary run-in with a piece of debris.

The second red flag came when John Cummiskey Racing rookie Lucas Kohl’s No. 34 came to a stop after a mechanical issue. The safety crew brought him back to pit-row and he was able to rejoin the session for the final fifteen minutes.

After watching three sophomores run nose-to-tail while dominating the USF2000 Championship in 2015, it should come as no surprise that six of the top seven on the combined time-sheet are sophomore USF2000 pilots. It should also come as no surprise that the top seven are only separated by four-tenths of a second, and that a dozen drivers were within Anthony Martin’s top lap of 01:23.8430.

The group of 18 drivers turned a total of 2445 laps (5,623.5 miles). In two days, Agren made 169 circuits of the 2.3 mile 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park road course, the most of any driver.

One key thought on USF2000:

After four straight driver’s championships, it appears that Cape Motorsports with /WTR will have some company at the top of the time-sheets in 2016. After leading three of the six sessions, there is no doubt that they are still the favorites. But with drivers from Pabst Racing, Team Pelfrey and John Cummiskey Racing also leading sessions and the top 12 covered by only one second, the competition for the top step of the podium should be fierce.

—————

Team Pelfrey put the stamp on a dominant Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire spring training test by leading their fifth of sixth sessions. This time, it was Pato O’Ward, who was driving the No. 81, for this session, that came out on top. Will Owen (Juncos Racing), Garett Grist (Juncos Racing), Jake Parsons (Juncos Racing) and Nico Jamin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR) finished out the rest of the top five.

Teams and drivers made sticker Cooper Tire runs late in the session after a lengthy red flag was required to clean up the gravel that rookie Nicolas Dapero brought back on to the track after light contact with the ARMCO and a spin through a gravel trap.

On the combined time-sheet, it was all Team Pelfrey, with Birchwood, WI rookie Aaron Telitz leading his teammates O’Ward and Weiron Tan. The three teammates were covered by only two-tenths of a second.

Meanwhile, the top 10 drivers on the combined time-sheet were all within one second of the fastest lap time.

The group of 11 drivers turned a total of 1393 laps (3,203.9 miles). In two days, Jay Horak made 153 circuits of the 2.3 mile 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park road course, the most of any driver.

One key thought on Pro Mazda:

Round 1 of the 2016 edition of the annual Team Pelfrey vs. Juncos Racing Pro Mazda battle went to Team Pelfrey. Thankfully it’s only testing and Juncos will have a chance to make adjustments before St. Petersburg.

But even more interesting than the squad vs. squad battle this year, could be the intra-squad battles within each team.

The three Team Pelfrey drivers were only covered by two-tenths of a second and all three have the potential to be in the championship hunt. The dynamic between the three very different personalities will be interesting to watch.

Juncos Racing could have four championship bullets as it’s clear that the two sophomores (Grist and Owen) will be pushed by their rookie (Dapero and Parsons) teammates.

Monday Update #2 – second USF2000 and Pro Mazda sessions – 1:40pm

Jordan Cane led his first Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda test session for Team Pelfrey. Not too bad for the 14 year-old phenomenon’s first try at “wings and slicks”. He was joined in the top five during the second session by his Kiwi teammate James Munro, Parker Thompson (Cape Motorsports with /WTR) and John Cummiskey Racing duo Ayla Agren and Lucas Kohl.

The session was once again extremely tight with top 10 drivers all within Cane’s top lap of 1:24.400.

Monday Update #1 – first USF2000 and Pro Mazda sessions – 10:45am

With their reputation as track “dew sweepers” and with a 7:30am Friday morning practice in St. Petersburg, an 8am test session is good practice for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda field.

Maybe he’s still on Australian time, but the early start certainly didn’t slow down reigning USF2000 rookie of the year Anthony Martin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR) who’s lap at 1:23.843 was the quickest of the morning. Team Pelfrey rookie James Munro, who had the second quickest time, was the only rookie in the top five. He was joined by Parker Thompson (Cape Motorsports with /WTR), Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing) and Garth Rickards (Pabst Racing).

Unfortunately, it was only a few minutes into the session when Rickards spun in Turn 2. The Pabst Racing sophomore required help getting his No. 22 extracted from the gravel causing a ten minute delay to recover his car and clean the track of gravel. The early off-track excursion certainly didn’t hurt Rickards, who ended up with the 5th quickest time of the session.

#TeamCooperTire and #MRTI program continues growth and benefits drivers and fans

coopertires

For the third straight year primary, Mazda Road To Indy partners Cooper Tire and Mazda Racing will utilize an innovative hashtag program to help grow the three MRTI series and as an easy way for fans to follow future Verizon IndyCar Series stars as they climb the open-wheel ladder.

In 2014, Cooper Tire rolled out the #TeamCooperTire program and was able to garner 60 million impressions.

The #TeamCooperTire program was joined by the #MRTI hashtag and Mazda Racing in 2015 and grew to 127 million impressions, reaching 6 million unique users on Twitter and 1 million unique users on Instagram.

There can be little argument that the motorsports landscape has changed over the past few decades. Gone are the days that a driver only has to bring his helmet to the track. They still need to be quick, but they also need much more in their toolbox. A sponsor is now looking for results AND a driver that is engaged and represents their brand well. With the amount of money and brand, goodwill involved it’s not surprising that engaged drivers like James Hnchcliffe and Helio Castroneves are popular with fans and sponsors.

With that last point in mind, the goal of the #MRTI and #TeamCooperTire hashtag program is for Cooper Tires and Mazda to provide a series of guideposts that will help Mazda Road To Indy drivers tell their story (branding) and connect with and increase social media followers. Both of those functions are key to attracting a personal fan base and also gives a driver a chance to show off their personality to potential sponsors.

The career benefits are enough to make a driver and team want to participate in the program, but Cooper Tires and Mazda have gone a step further and will be providing prizes to the teams and drivers. The MRTI season has been divided into six different contest periods and if a driver/team passes all of the provided guideposts in that period they will entered to win a prize, which will include a free set of Cooper Tire racing slicks.

Fans will also have a chance to benefit from this program by:

  • Having a central place to find MRTI content. Searching the two hashtags on Twitter and Instagram will guide you to content created by drivers, teams, the series, media and partners. Drivers are encouraged to post behind-the-scenes action, so that you, as a fan will have fun way to follow along with the stories and lives of the drivers as they strive to reach the Verizon IndyCar Series.
  • The potential to win prizes, and who doesn’t like giveaways? Last year, MRTI drivers were able to give away a set of tires as well as other Cooper Tire prizes to their loyal followers. Make sure to be on the lookout for fun contests from your favorite MRTI drivers.

Sunday Update #4 – final USF2000 and Pro Mazda session and notebook – 6:15pm

For the second straight Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda session it is was Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomore Parker Thompson who led the way with a top lap of 1:24.355. He was followed closely by three drivers from three different teams before reaching his teammate Anthony Martin in fifth. The meat in the Cape Motorsports with /WTR sandwich were James Munro (Team Pelfrey), Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing) and Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing). The top five drivers were all within three-tenths of a second of Thompson and the top 10 were all within one second.

The impressive 1:14.1663 lap that Lloyd turned during the morning session held up to all challengers during the second and third session. Sophomore Thompson’s top third session lap was good enough for second and that was followed by Jordan Cane and James Munro, a pair of Team Pelfrey rookies. John Cummiskey Racing sophomore Agren was the fifth quickest of the day.

Outside of some two-ins for minor mechanical issues or harmless spins there were no major incidents during the three hours of track time.

The drivers turned a total of 1,237 (2,845.1 miles) with Agren’s 97 circuits the most of any driver in the field.

Combined Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda time-sheet (Michai Stephens did take part, but was experiencing issues with his transponder):

In another flip-flop, the third and final Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire session of the day saw a trio Team Pelfrey drivers top the time sheets. This time it was sophomore Pato O’Ward who’s quickest lap of 1:20.745 just barely topped his teammate Aaron Telitz and Weiron Tan. A pair of Juncos Racing drivers made up the remainder of the top five.

The entire session ran “clean and green”.

O’Ward’s third session lap was also the quickest of the day. Telitz, Tan, Grist and Nicolas Dapero (Juncos Racing) made up the remainder of the day’s top five.

The eleven drivers turned a total of 729 laps (1,676.7 miles). National Class driver Jay Horak circulated the 2.3 mile 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park 91 times, the most of any driver.

More changes

In addition to an 85,000 square foot addition to the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum that is currently under construction, Barber Motorsports Park is also adding a new viewing area.

In 2015, the 740 acre park-like racing facility constructed a bridge that spanned the track just past Turn 9. Connecting to the museum, this bridge leads to a unique viewing area on the inside of the Turn 8 and Turn 9 complex of corners. This year, construction has begun on a bridge that will link that viewing area with a new 35 foot tall viewing platform under construction on the outside of Turn 4.

Cooper boots

We were able to confirm with a Cooper Tire official that boots being used by the USF2000 series and the Pro Mazda series are the same compound that was utilized in 2015.

The tires used by the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tire series on Road and Street courses will also remain unchanged in 2016. However, the oval tires have undergone a slight change in compound.

Pelfrey’s USF2000 improvement

Team Pelfrey’s first year USF2000 program struggled to find a competitive pace at times in 2015, and struggling is not something that the Palmetto, Florida based team is not used to.  So what changed in the off-season? Team Manager Nigel Tuckey told TSO that the entire program got a reboot with all new staffing. Tuckey also explained that having USF2000 veteran Aaron Telitz join their Pro Mazda program has been beneficial to the drivers in USF2000.

Sunday update #3 – second USF2000 and Pro Mazda sessions – 2:40pm

In news that is anything but shocking, Cape Motorsports with /WTR is still going to be the team to beat if a driver wants to contend for the Mazda Motorsports advancement scholarship. Sophomore Cape Motorsports with /WTR pilot Parker Thompson turned the quickest lap at 1:24.519. The 18 year-old Canadian was joined in the top five by Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing), TJ Fischer (Team Pelfrey), Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing) and Nikita Lastochkin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR)

The first red flag of the second Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda session was for the No. 20 RJB Motorsports of Clint McMahan ground to halt with mechanical issues at the exit of Turn 6.

So why were the times in the second session slower than the first session? The easy answer is tires. Each entry is allowed two sets of Cooper Tire racing slicks for each day of testing. Most teams started the day with an old set of tires from a previous session before using a set of sticker tires at the very end of the first session and continued to use those tires for the entire second session. This means that the quickest times of the day should come in the third session when drivers bolt on fresh rubber for a qualifying simulation in the final session of the day.

After a trio of Team Pelfrey cars led the morning session, it was rivals Juncos Racing who came out on top in the first of two afternoon sessions. A lap of 1:21.666 by Garett Grist was a scant eight one-hundredths ahead of his sophomore teammate Will Owen. Aaron Telitz (Team Pelfrey), Nicolas Dapero (Juncos Racing) and Jake Eidson (Cape Motorsports with /WTR).

The top nine drivers were covered by only one second, once again proving that the Pro Mazda field might not have huge numbers, but it does have huge talent.

Sunday update # 2 – first USF2000 and Pro Mazda sessions – 11:15am

If the first official Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda test session is any indication (and it likely won’t be), be prepared to expect the unexpected in 2016. The 2015 championship series was dominated by Cape Motorsports with /WTR and sophomore drivers, while the first test session saw four rookie drivers among the top six and Pabst Racing along with Team Pelfrey take the top six spots on the time-sheet.

Leading the way was Pabst Racing’s Jordan Lloyd, who contested the first four USF2000 races with John Cummiskey Racing in 2015 before returning home to Australia and dominating the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship. He was joined in the top five by 14 year-old rookie Jordan Cane (Team Pelfrey), sophomore Yufeng Luo (Pabst Racing), sophomore Garth Rickards (Pabst Racing) and rookie Robert Megennis (Team Pelfrey).

The only red flag of the session occurred when rookie Lucas Kohl had an off-track excursion. The John Cummiskey Racing crew was able to get the dirt and grass cleared from the radiators and the Roberto Moreno mentored driver was able to get back out on track.

Over the past three seasons the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire championship has been a back and forth affair between Team Pelfrey and Juncos Racing, and it appears that will continue in 2016. The two powerhouse teams held down the top seven spots at the top of Pro Mazda time sheet.

The field in 2016 might not have the optimal quantity, but it sure doesn’t lack in quality. The top six drivers were all covered by all eight-tenths of a second. Team Pelfrey rookie Aaron Telitz led the way over Weiron Tan (Team Pelfrey), Pato O’Ward (Team Pelfrey), Nicolas Dapero (Juncos Racing), Will Owen (Juncos Racing), and Garett Grist (Juncos Racing).

The entire one session went green with only a couple of off-track excursions.
