Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca – Friday Practice 1 – 11:11am

A rough start for the two championship contenders in the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire championship was the story of the first practice session, as the Juncos Racing trio of Will Owen, Jake Parsons, and Nicolas Dapero held down the top three spots on the time-sheet.

For the first 20 minutes of the session, only 11 of the 12 entries were track, as championship leader Aaron Telitz was stuck on pit road with what appeared to be leak at the rear of the No. 82 Team Pelfrey machine.. The rookie did finally takes to the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course, and ended up turning only 4 laps which included only the seventh quickest lap.

Telitz’s Team Pelfrey teammate and closest competitor for the championship was able to turn 14 laps, but was only able to end up with the fifth quickest lap of the session.

After a one hour and forty five minute delay for fog, the “Soul Red Finale” action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca got underway with a twenty-five minute IMSA Prototype Lites practice (more on that series at some point this weekend).

The 12 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire entries were next up and took to the track for their 25 minutes session (shortened from 30 minutes) at 10:20am.

Early in the session it was championship contender Pato O’Ward who led the way, but he was quickly surpassed by Juncos Racing sophomore Owen. The 21 year-old continued to improve on his quick time as the session wound down, turning his quickest lap of 1:24.6770 on the 14th of 15 circuits.

It wasn’t a huge surprise that the three drivers from the Brownsburg, Indiana based squad were quick right out of the box. Owen led the way in practice at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca last year, and his teammate Garett Grist won both the Saturday and Sunday races.

The 12 drivers that took to the turned a total of 163 laps with Cape Motorsports with /WTR’s Nico Jamin and DE Force Racing’s Kory Enders both turning 16 laps, the most in the field.

Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire – Soul Red Final preview

Opposites… Night and day, summer and winter, hot and cold, short and tall, and the pre-Road America and post-Road America portions of the 2016 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire season.

In the seven Pro Mazda races prior to Road America, sophomore Pato O’Ward outscored Aaron Telitz, his rookie Team Pelfrey teammate 221 to 166. Since the series visited Telitz’s home state of Wisconsin and the 14-Turn, 4.014-mile Road America road course, Telitz has outscored O’Ward by a 179 to 110 margin. The tale of two seasons leaves Telitz with a slim 14 point margin heading to the "Soul Red Finale" at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

In the fist seven races of the year, 17 year-old O'Ward won six times, finished second in the other race, and started on pole five times. However, beginning at Road America the Monterey, Mexico native has fallen into a slump that has seen him stand on the podium only one time in past six races.

“I never got down when Pato was winning a bunch of races,” said Telitz, “because we weren’t even halfway through the season at that point. I thought that anything Pato had done in the first half of the season, I could do in the second half. I think it helps that I’m a little bit older, because I’m not intimidated that some of the other drivers have more experience in the car than I do – and I knew I would be quick at my home track of Road America to start the second half of the season.”

In the six races since a disappointing fifth place finish on the Lucas Oil Raceway oval, Telitz has ripped off a string of six straight podiums, including four wins, and five poles.

The pressure to win the $600,000 Mazda Racing Advancement Scholarship is immense for both of the Team Pelfrey teammates. Both drivers have had points during this season that their continuation hinged on finding funding to continue into the next event, and both of their careers in racing are on the line at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend.

“Winning the Mazda scholarship to enter the USF2000 series is the biggest achievement of my racing career so far, and it’s what allowed me to get on the Mazda Road to Indy,” said Telitz, the 2013 Skip Barber Championship Shootout winner of a $200,000 Mazda backed scholarship.  “I’m in the same position this year; winning the title would mean I would be able to move into Indy Lights. It’s a huge jump and it would become possible with Mazda’s scholarship. I have a huge weight on my shoulders but that’s how I felt the year I won my previous scholarship so I’ll hope to repeat the same thing.”

“I need to win the championship,” explained second place O’Ward. “There’s no other option for me, so whether I’m leading or trailing, the pressure will be the same and my approach will be the same. If the car is like it was in the first half of the year, I know I can close out the championship. My mindset going into Mazda Raceway is to repeat what I’ve done all year – take it session by session, race by race. If I do my best, I know the championship will come to me.”

What we’re watching:

1. Past results at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca by Telitz, O'Ward and Team Pelfrey.

Telitz came to the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course in 2015 with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda championship on the line. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduate could not catch his teammate Nico Jamin and Pabst Racing's Jake Eidson, but he qualified second for both races and ended up with second and fourth place finishes. Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was also the track at which Telitz’s transition from karts to the Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire began in 2012, when he won a $10,000 Skip Barber Racing prize.

“My car racing career really started at Mazda Raceway. That’s where I won my first Mazda scholarship to start competing in Skip Barber cars,” explained Telitz. “It was my jumping-off point. I’ve been fast every time I’ve been there, whether it was in Skip Barber cars or last year in USF2000, I’ve always been quick at Mazda Raceway.”

Unlike Telitz, who has never made a start in Mazda Renesis powered Pro Mazda machinery at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, O’Ward made two starts in the 2015 finale. O’Ward qualified eighth for the first race, but had a disappointing race on Saturday. O’Ward and Victor Franzoni made contact before the start-finish line and O’Ward did not even take the green flag, finishing in second last. However, the second race of last year’s finale should have erased the bad memories from Saturday’s DNF and left the Topo Chico sponsored driver with good memories of the Monterey County, California circuit. O’Ward started a disappointing 14th in the Sunday race, but was able to pass eight cars to finish sixth.

Team Pelfrey, the home of both Telitz and O’Ward, has had some recent success at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca winning races in 2011 and 2012 with Connor DePhillippi and Jack Hawksworth. However, the Florida based squad was bested by rivals Juncos Racing and Garett Grist in both races in the 2015 finale.

TSO will be watching Friday practice sessions closely to see if the Juncos Racing trio of veteran Will Owen (third and fourth place in 2015), and rookies Jake Parsons and Nicolas Dapero can play the role of spoilers.

2. TSO will be watching how the two championship eligible drivers deal with the pressure of possibly having to win to extend their open-wheel careers. Having experience in similar situations could certainly be an advantage for Telitz.

The more experienced 24 year-old Telitz has far more experience in dealing with championship pressure in cars, however he has yet to win any of those championships. Telitz trailed Nico Jamin, and Jake Eidson for the USF2000 championship after a season long battle. In 2013, Telitz battled Eidson and Adrian Starrantino for the F1600 Formula F Championship Series, but once again ended up with bronze medal. In 2012, Telitz was once again in a battle with Eidson, this time for the Skip Barber Winter Series title, and once again Telitz need up behind Eidson.

On the other hand, this is the first time that the 17 year-old O’Ward has been in contention for a championship in cars. O’Ward does however have plenty of experience in racing for championships in karting, winning the eight different championships and finishing second or third five times.

3. With natural terrain road courses making up 68% of the 2016 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire schedule, it’s certainly prudent to investigate how the two championship contenders have fared on the traditional twisty circuits.

This weekend will mark the ninth, 10th and 11th natural terrain road course races for the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire series and in the first eight races (two each at Barber Motorsports Park, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Road America, and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course), Telitz has scored four more points then O’Ward, but O’Ward leads the win total four to two. Nico Jamin from Cape Motorsports with /WTR won the last two road course races at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course over one month ago.

4. Generally, qualifying well on natural terrain road courses is an important part of securing a top finish, and that has been no different in the 17 previous Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire races at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

In nine of those seventeen races, the pole sitter has ended up in Victory Lane, and the only time a winner has come from outside the top three starters was in 2000 when Grant Ryley won from inside third row starting spot. The average starting position of the winners at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is 1.8.

Starting on pole, does not 100% guarantee you a good finish, but, it is a very good indicator of success at the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course. 16 times the pole sitter has fined in the top four, with the lone instance of a worse finishing coming when current Juncos Racing Pro Mazda engineer Peter Dempsey finished 25th after starting on pole in 2009. Dempsey had contact with current Pro Mazda steward and Mazda factory prototype driver Joel Miller in “The Corkscrew” and lost the championship to Adam Christodoulou

Debutantes

World Speed Motorsports, who last appeared as a team at Barber Motorsports Park in April, will making the trip from their home base 150 miles north of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at Sonoma Raceway with two National Class drivers for the trio of races.

Daniel Swanbeck, and Joseph Burton-Harris will both be making their Mazda Road To Indy appearances.

Swanbeck, hails from nearby San Jose, California and was the 2015 SCCA Majors Formula F champion. The San Jose State University graduate (Mechanical Design Engineering) who spent years a successful auto-crosser had two podium finishes in the most recent Pro Formula Mazda rounds of the Formula Car Challenge at Portland International Raceway.

Born in England, but raised in Australia, Burton-Harris was the Formula Mazda champion during the 2015 SCCA National Run-Offs at Daytona International Raceway. The 19 year-old was also a double winner in his first two Pro Formula Mazda races during the Portland International Raceway round of the Formula Car Challenge.

DE Force Racing, who recently announced that they are planning on entering three brand-new USF17’s in the 2017 Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda championship, are getting their feet wet a little early. The Angleton, Texas based squad is fielding a two-car National Class attack for Kory Enders and Moises de la Vara.

Enders, a 19 year-old who lives in the Houston, Texas area has plenty of seat time in a Pro Mazda car at MSR Houston, where the team is based.

de la Vara, from Guadalajara, Mexico is currently part of the inaugural F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda season and through three of the five events is seventh in the championship. (one podium and seven top 10s). The 18 year-old also took part in the maiden NACAM Formula 4 Championship season where de la Vara was top rookie with one win three top fives.

Mid-Ohio – Pro Mazda Presented by Cooper Tires – Race #2

Pro Mazda Logo

The “Nico Jamin Show” at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course rolled on in the second of two Royal Purple Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio races in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, the second rung of the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder.

Driving the Soul Red No. 2 Mazda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, the Frenchman captured his fifth win in a row at the 2.258-mile road course, albeit not in as straightforward a rout as his win was this morning.

The 40-minute race was the last track activity of the day and followed the Pirelli World Challenge race which had just proceeded it, and the track had the interesting mix of the Pirelli rubber coupled with then some spritzes of rain that popped up during the race.

The race for all intents and purposes, though, was decided on a chaotic and perhaps crazy first lap – although it was the first chapter in a fairly entertaining race filled with a number of passes and contact.

Aaron Telitz had the pole position by way of qualifying in the No. 82 Rice Lake Weighing Systems entry for Team Pelfrey, ahead of Jamin and Will Owen in the No. 23 AMR entry for Juncos Racing. The grid is below.

Note Pato O’Ward, in fifth, took his No. 80 Topo Chico Team Pelfrey entry for an installation lap following IndyCar qualifying after an electrical issue was diagnosed in the first race, which may have hampered O’Ward’s start to his day.

Rank Car Driver Time Session
1 82 Aaron Telitz 1:18.2545 Quals
2 2 Nico Jamin 1:18.3482 Quals
3 23 Will Owen 1:18.5858 Quals
4 00 Jake Parsons 1:18.5909 Quals
5 80 Pato O’Ward 1:18.8675 Quals
6 31 Nicolas Dapero 1:18.8737 Quals
7 81 TJ Fischer 1:19.3821 Race 1
8 57 Bob Kaminsky 1:20.6877 Quals
9 13 Bobby Eberle 1:20.9510 Quals

From the start, Telitz led Jamin but only just, with Jamin and Telitz side-by-side into the Keyhole (Turn 2) before Jamin briefly emerged ahead onto the backstraight.

That lead didn’t last long with the two of them side-by-side, with Owen close and O’Ward only just behind, having got around Owen’s teammate Jake Parsons.

Owen, who seemingly would not be denied, got what Telitz later called the “run of the century” to make it a side-by-side affair with Telitz through Turns 4 and 5.

However, with Telitz later saying he got “pinballed” in the four-way fight, he lost momentum to open the door for Jamin, who then slid by at Turn 7 for the lead, himself. Jamin made it around the outside of Owen at Turn 6 which positioned him for the inside of Turn 7.

At the end of the first lap the order was jumbled with Jamin leading Owen and O’Ward, with Telitz down to fourth and Parsons down to fifth. At the back of the field, National class driver Bob Kaminsky spun on his own exiting the final turn and stopped driver’s right, but resumed after finding reverse.

Reports of light rain followed on pit lane, and the rain would later intensify to bring out a full-course caution for moisture. Before the rain, Telitz had made it around O’Ward for third, which proved a pivotal move considering those two drivers’ respective status in the championship chase.

The restart came at Lap 15 with the order just before Jamin, Owen, Telitz, O’Ward and TJ Fischer.

A somewhat crazy restart followed, with Telitz getting a monster “run of the century” of his own out of the final corner and coming to Owen’s inside down the front straight to move into second place.

But the pass didn’t last for long, with Owen able to get back by for second a lap later, on Lap 16. And shortly thereafter Owen would begin his pursuit of Jamin, although a quick run wide at Turn 4 put pause to those hopes and he was focused on securing the runner-up position.

Roughly 1.7 to 1.9 seconds covered the two drivers, although both were more than one second behind Jamin up front.

Further back, Parsons later pitted out of fifth and Fischer limped around without a front wing.

The checkered flag flew with Jamin up front for his second win of the day, and the season, by 1.8594 seconds over Owen, with Telitz in third.

O’Ward and Fischer were fourth and fifth. Team Pelfrey now has its first race of the season – in 13 races – that isn’t a first or second with at least one of its drivers. The team won the first 11 races and Telitz was second in Round 12 this morning, but today marked the first Cape/Juncos top two team performance.

After the post-race press conference, all three podium finishers rewatched portions of the race with a mix of laughter, cheers and awe, as well as shock at wondering how they all made it through the race without major contact.

Jamin called his second consecutive Mid-Ohio Mazda Road to Indy weekend sweep an “amazing feeling” but noted the start was so crazy, and if he was to have any chance of winning from second on the grid, he’d “need to go for it” in a super aggressive manner.

Owen secured his third double podium weekend of the year for Juncos (second and third at Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis weekend, and third in both Road America races) and was almost surprised at how he hung onto the car in that “run of the century.” He called Telitz’s restart “borderline” but was otherwise very happy with his day.

Telitz explained his take on the day’s proceedings, which didn’t mean to see him get aggressive before the start all but forced him into it.

“I never wanted to be super aggressive. It just happened that way,” Telitz said. “I got him on the backstraight. Then Will had the ‘run of the century’ on the outside.

“It was great… but the only thing I didn’t like about it was he ‘parked it’ in Turn 6, and that gave Nico the run.

“But I wasn’t as concerned about either of them because they’re not in the championship and have nothing to lose. Since I was P4, then I realized Pato’s ahead of me, I had to get aggressive. I did not want him to have any momentum at all going to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. But while I felt I got hit a lot, I knew it was important to not hit Pato – and I didn’t hit him! Quite a day.”

Results are below:

And so, that leaves the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires as the first of the three Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires series with only one weekend remaining – the aforementioned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca weekend on Sept. 9-11, for a tripleheader weekend.

After this result, Telitz carries in an unofficial 14-point lead, 345 to 331, over O’Ward. O’Ward won six of the first seven races; he’s been off the podium in five of the last six. Telitz has been on the podium in all six, with four wins, a second, and a third.

Jamin is now a clear third in points in the role of spoiler heading into Mazda Raceway, a place where he swept both Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda races last year.

At 271 points scored, Jamin is too far back to mount a championship challenge even if he’s not technically mathematically eliminated. But, he does have a chance to end the year on a high note and pull off another weekend sweep at Mazda Raceway as he did this weekend at Mid-Ohio.

Owen has a lot to be proud of after his performance this weekend, and with 254 points, he’s got a good chance to usurp Jamin for third, be “best of the rest” behind the Pelfrey drivers and look to end a two-plus year winless drought dating to a USF2000 race in similar tricky half wet, half dry conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in 2014. Any win at Mazda Raceway would be his first in Pro Mazda.

This concludes the Pro Mazda portion of our TSO Ladder coverage this weekend from Mid-Ohio. We hope you enjoyed it, and we’ll have the weekend cappers for USF2000 and the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires tomorrow.

Mid-Ohio – Saturday – Indy Lights Qualifying, Pro Mazda Race #1

Doing a double dip of quick hitters this morning after a pair of sessions to kick off the day here at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, on the Saturday for the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires.

Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires kicked off the day with a 30-minute qualifying session from 7:50 to 8:20 a.m. ET and local time, followed shortly by the first of two Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires 40-minute races – both of which will run on the same day.

Notes and tidbits to follow:

Indy Lights Logo

Prior to Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires qualifying for the Cooper Tire Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, TSO caught up with Zach Veach of Belardi Auto Racing, who languished in 12th in Friday’s lone practice session through no fault of his own.

As it turned out, Veach noted a significant horsepower loss caused by his turbo issue. The team diagnosed and fixed the issue and Veach would be higher up the grid in qualifying, albeit not quite in pole contention.

The thus far dominant driver of the weekend has been Uruguayan Santiago Urrutia, who led Friday’s lone official practice session and was also a Pro Mazda race winner here last year for Team Pelfrey.

The Pro Mazda champion, who now drives the Soul Red No. 55 Dallara IL-15 Mazda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, improved more than a second from his practice time on Friday (1:11.9530) to a new best time of 1:10.9428 in qualifying.

To wit, he was also nearly seven tenths quicker on the field following his first pole position of the season for the first of two races this weekend.

Urrutia enters the race in second in points, 24 behind points leader Ed Jones of Carlin.

Another Carlin driver, third-placed in points Felix Serralles, will line up second on the grid.

Andre Negrao made it two SPM cars in the top five in third, ahead of Dean Stoneman and Jones. Shelby Blackstock is a respectable sixth ahead of Veach and Neil Alberico. Past Mid-Ohio Pro Mazda and USF2000 race winner Garett Grist slots into ninth, while Juncos Racing’s Kyle Kaiser had an off session and was 12th.

The first Indy Lights race is scheduled for later this afternoon, slotted between 3:30 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. on the schedule.

Pro Mazda Logo

In the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, TSO caught up with Aaron Telitz, who entered this weekend’s Royal Purple Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, after he qualified second.

The Birchwood, Wis. native indicated he felt he did have an extra tenth available in the bank in qualifying, but ran to a plan for Team Pelfrey in terms of the number of laps completed. He pitted after completing that amount of scheduled laps, but at the same moment when Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing’s Nico Jamin pipped him for pole and the track record that went with it.

With the start – like yesterday’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda race – moved from the backstraight into Turn 4 to the frontstraight, passing was always going to be difficult and so whoever emerged ahead from Turn 1 was likely going to have the edge.

That driver on this occasion was Jamin, who took the lead from the green flag ahead of Telitz and Owen.

Jamin was running at a ridiculously quick clip throughout the race, with a new race lap record of 1:18.598 nearly a full 1.2 seconds quicker than the previous lap record of 1:19.773, set last year by Neil Alberico.

And that actually works as a perfect segue to note that Jamin dominated the race, winning by 5.0917 seconds over Telitz, for Cape’s first Pro Mazda win since Alberico pulled off a victory here last year. The 40-minute race lasted 23 laps, and ran without a full-course caution.

For Jamin, it also adds him to the list of Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda champions who’ve now won a race in Pro Mazda as well. It’s his fourth straight victory at Mid-Ohio, having also won all three USF2000 races here last year.

Telitz, thinking more of the championship than the race win, was fully content with second place with Owen leading Juncos Racing’s efforts in third.

Jake Parsons (Juncos) ran an untroubled race to fourth while the battle on the day was for fifth.

With Nico Dapero and TJ Fischer both getting around Pato O’Ward – Fischer being the more notable driver to do so considering he’s the third member of Team Pelfrey and not in the championship fight – the Mexican driver finished seventh, and has thus lost the points lead for the first time this season.

Although O’Ward won six of the first seven races, he’s now finished off the podium in four of the last five races. And that’s swung the title lead to Telitz for the first time.

After the race TSO caught up with all top three drivers.

Jamin said quite simply, “I just love this track!” He added that with the medium speed corners and challenge in passing, if you get on the pole, chances are very good that you’ll win the race.

That might put Telitz in the catbird’s seat for this evening’s second race of the day, set from 6 to 6:50 p.m. If it rains, Telitz said being on the pole will allow for clear vision without any spray.

Telitz focused on defending from Will Owen at the start, rather than attacking Jamin. He said he’s more or less racing O’Ward only in terms of the title, so finishing ahead of him first is most important.

Owen noted that the impressive pace throughout the field speaks to how well the Cooper Tires are coming in and gelling with the track. He’s focused on beating his teammates.

Race results for this race are below, followed by the grid for the second race.

Mid-Ohio – Pro Mazda Presented by Cooper Tires – Day #1 Recap

Pro Mazda Logo

The battle between Team Pelfrey teammates Pato O’Ward and Aaron Telitz continues to take center stage as the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires heads to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Entering the weekend, they’re both tied with 297 points. O’Ward has six victories to Telitz’s five in the first 11 races, with five races remaining.

But both have embarked on a series of streaks. O’Ward, the 17-year-old Mexican in the No. 80 Topo Chico/Gap Guard car, won six of the first seven, including five in a row from Barber through Lucas Oil Raceway. Telitz has now won four in a row though at Road America and Toronto in his No. 82 Rice Lake Weighing Systems car.

There’s also a tie for third in points with the surging Nico Jamin, who’s scored three straight podiums in the Soul Red No. 2 Mazda, now level with Juncos Racing’s Will Owen in his No. 23 AMR entry. Jamin swept the three USF2000 races at Mid-Ohio last year.

Elsewhere the field of 10 features Owen’s Juncos Racing teammates, the rookie pair of Nicolas Dapero and Jake Parsons, TJ Fischer in the third Pelfrey car and a trio of National class entries, Bobby Eberle, Bob Kaminsky and Kevin Davis, although Davis has been a no-show in sessions thus far. Jorge Cevallos, who was entered in a second Cape car at Toronto, is not here this weekend.

Testing took place on Thursday before official sessions took place on Friday.

Practice Recap:

Not a ton to report from the 30-minute first and only official practice before qualifying on Friday, run in warm, clear conditions.

Telitz topped the timesheets with a best time of 1:19.062, ahead of the three Juncos Racing entries, led by Dapero in second at a 1:19.152.

O’Ward and Fischer were fifth and sixth, with Jamin only able to clock two laps in the session.

Qualifying Recap:

Something weird happened in Pro Mazda qualifying at Mid-Ohio.

A track record fell for the first time in 10 years, and it wasn’t a member of Team Pelfrey on the pole position.

Indeed Nico Jamin, who won all three USF2000 races last year at Mid-Ohio, delivered a 1:18.1385 in the No. 2 Soul Red Mazda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, which eclipsed a 10-year-old mark by Ryan Justice in May 2006, at 1:18.300.

Aaron Telitz was actually first to eclipse the track record mark at 1:18.207 before Jamin got ahead by that half a tenth.

The pole position for Jamin is his first in Pro Mazda and ends a run of pole positions for the Team Pelfrey team that’s lasted the entire year. Team Pelfrey has won each of the first 11 races, while Jamin has come closest to ending that run with the three podiums in a row entering Mid-Ohio.

In the Team Pelfrey internal battle, Telitz still emerged ahead in second while Pato O’Ward was only fifth, and TJ Fischer seventh.

Jake Parsons led Juncos Racing’s trio of drivers with a solid third; the Australian seeks a clean weekend after a couple incidents in Toronto.

Qualifying times are below.

Exhibition Place – Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire day #3 – race #2 recap and results

Pro Mazda Logo

After 11 of 16 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire events, Team Pelfrey’s Pato O’Ward and Aaron Telitz are in the exact same position they were in before the 2016 season began. Tied in points and with an equal chance to win the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship and a seat  in Indy Lights.

After splitting the top step of the podium during the championship’s first two races at the opening event at St. Petersburg, the story of the Team Pelfrey duo of O’Ward and Telitz, is one of back-and-forth momentum.

O’Ward, a Monterrey, Mexico native had the early momentum, winning five straight races starting at Barber Motorsports Park, continuing through the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, and ending on the Lucas Oil Raceway oval. The 17 year-old left Indianapolis, Indiana and the “Month of May” with what looked like an unsurmountable 55 point lead.

Since traveling home to his home state race at Road America, Telitz, a native of Rice Lake, Wisconsin has won four straight races, scoring 132 of a possible 133 points available. Combine that dominacnce with only one podium from O’Ward during the same period, the championship leaves Canada tied at 295.

For the fourth race in a row, Team Pelfrey rookie Telitz started on pole and was able to get a jump on the rest of the field.

Behind Telitz, the field spread out three-wide with front row starter and championship leader O’Ward falling into the clutches of Nico Jamin, Jake Parsons, and Will Owen, falling all the way back to fifth.

After the race, O’Ward explained that after crashing on the opening lap yesterday, he knew he couldn’t push too hard to keep his foot in it because another DNF would be devastating to his championship hopes.

At the end of Lap 1 the running order was: Telitz, Jamin, Parsons, Owen, Ward, Cevallos, Fisher, Dapero and Eberle.

O’Ward wasted no time beginning his march back towards the front of the field, getting Owen for fourth on Lap 2, making slight contact with Parsons while passing him on the inside of Turn 3 on the Lap 3 for a spot on the podium and getting by Jamin on the inside of Turn 1 after a four lap battle.

The dicing behind leader Telitz allowed him to pull out to a 6.2 second lead over O’Ward by Lap 10.

Further behind the lead group, Juncos Racing teammate Parsons and Owen were involved in an intense six lap tussle for fourth. Sophomore Owen was finally able to get by rookie Parsons in Turn 3.

After getting by Jamin, O’Ward was able to eat into the lead that Telitz had built up, setting the quickest lap of the race on Lap 18.

Telitz explained that after O’Ward’s quick lap his engineer Tom Knapp came on the radio telling him that he wasn’t the quickest anymore.

Understanding that every point counts, Telitz immediately responded with by recapturing the top lap honors on Lap 20. The lap at 1:11.040 stood as the quickest for the remaining 14 laps. It was the fifth time in 2016 and seventh time in his career that Telitz scored a bonus point for having the quickest race lap.

Telitz continued to turn quicker laps than O’Ward did for the remainder of the race and was able to pull out to a maximum 7.4 second lead and ended up winning by 4.0 seconds.

After early trouble dropped Team Pelfrey’s TJ Fischer to the rear of the field, the 22 year-old from Vacaville, California was able to recover to finish sixth, making a last lap pass of Jorge Cevallos in Turn 3.

The Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire series has next weekend off before a double header on the 2.258-Mile, 13-Turn Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Just an FYI, this race report might be a little light. Unfortunately, the race started after the track cameras were turned off.

Rookie Aaron Telitz led the Pro Mazda field to green for the fifth time in 2016. The 24 year-old led his Team Pelfrey teammate Pato O’Ward into Turn 1. Behind the pole sitter, Nico Jamin was able to get beside championship leader Pato O’Ward going into Turn 2 and the two drivers just barely touched wheels and O’Ward made contact with the wall and was not able to continue.

As the caution flew, the order was Telitz, Jamin, Jake Parsons, Nicolas Dapero, Jorge Cevallos, Will Owen, TJ Fischer, Bobby Eberle and O’Ward.

The running order remained the same until Lap 7 when Cevallos, who made the switch from JDC Motorsports to Cape Motorsports with /WTR after missing the last three events, was able to pass Dapero for fourth.

At the half-way point of the 30 minute race, Telitz held a slim 1.1 second lead over Jamin. Parsons remained in third, Cevallos fourth and Will Owen moved by Dapero to claim fifth.

On Lap 13, Cevallos, who had moved up to fourth from his sixth starting spot hit pit lane after making contact.

The 1.1 second lead Telitz held over Jamin at the half-way point started to grow at a couple of tenths of a second per lap and with ten minutes left in the race, the Rice Lake Wisconsin native’s gap had grown to 2.5 seconds.

The gap remained at 2.5 seconds when Telitz crossed under the checkered flag.

After destroying a car in the first practice session, Parson made a nice comeback, qualifying fourth and finishing third, his second podium of the year.

After the race, Parsons explained that the lowest of lows and the highest of highs of last two days have been a great learning experience for him.

Jamin said he is really happy with his Cape Motorsports with /WTR car at the moment, but  The Rouen, France native said his thoughts are really with everybody back home in France.

For the 10th straight race, a driver from the Team Pelfrey has put one of the familiar yellow and black machines on pole.  This time, it’s the Rice Lake Weighing sponsored No. 82 of Aaron Telitz that beat Pato O’Ward to the top spot. It’s the third straight pole for the 24 year-old, and his the fourth of the 2016 season and sixth of his Mazda Road To Indy career.

The Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire series served as an alarm clock for the neighbors of Exhibition place when the Mazda Renesis cars took to the 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place temporary street course for a 20 minute qualifying session at 7:50am.

Pelfrey teamates O’Ward and Telitz spent the first half of the session trading quick laps. The order ten minutes into the 20 minute session was: O’Ward, Telitz, Nico Jamin, Will Owen, Jake Parsons, Jorge Cevallos, Nicolas Dapero, Bobby Eberle, and TJ Fischer.

O’Ward, and Teltiz, the two championship contenders continued to trade quick laps for the next five minutes when Teltiz took pole and also the important bonus point that goes along with it.

After have the fourth quickest time in qualifying, Team Pelfrey rookie Fischer had a forgettable qualifying session. If it wasn’t bad enough that the 22 year-old Californian had an issue with his transponder, Fisher also tagged the wall in Turn 11 damaging his suspension and ending his session early.

For the third straight race, reigning USF2000 champion Nico Jamin will start from the inside of row 2. Starting beside Jamin is Jake Parsons, the first of three Juncos Racing drivers.

After destroying his primary car in the first Pro Mazda practice session on Friday, the 21 year-old recovered for his sixth straight top five start. Unfortunately, the Juncos Racing team will have to go back to work after Parsons ended the session against outside barriers at the exit of the tricky Turn 1.

After dominating his home state weekend at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, Aaron Telitz ended another day “up north” on top of the time-sheet. The 24 year-old ended the day one-tenth of a second ahead of his championship leading Team Pelfrey teammate Pato O’Ward.

Nico Jamin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR), TJ Fischer (Team Pelfrey) and Will Owen (Juncos Racing) were the remainder of the top five.

First session:

Despite the extended USF2000 session before them, the nine Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire entries were able to begin under sunny skies, with low 70F temperatures, and on time at 8:40am.

In an almost exact copy of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda session before them, the Pro Mazda session came to a halt when the red flag flew for contact in Turn 11. Nicolas Dapero and his No. 31 Juncos Racing machine made contact with the nose of his car suffering moderate damage. The 17 year-old Argentinian was able to get out of the car under his own power.

The track went green after a short clean-up and the drivers were able to get between eight and nine hot laps completed before Dapero’s Juncos Racing teammate Jake Parsons made hard contact with the wall at the exit of Turn 11. The rear end of Melbourne, Australia natives No. 00 got loose and tagged the outside wall with his right rear tire, turning his car into the wall nose first, suffering significant damage to the nose of the car.

Championship leader and previous Toronto podium finisher Pato O’Ward was the quickest driver in the session. Parsons, Aaron Telitz (Team Pelfrey), Will Owen (Juncos Racing) and Nico Jamin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR) made up the remainder of the top five.

Second session:

The final Mazda Road To Indy session of “Free Friday”, the second Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire session of the day, was the only one of the six Mazda Road To Indy sessions to run clean and green.

After hard contact in Turn 11 during the morning session, the Smart Mind Institute sponsored No. 00 of Jake Parsons sustained too much damage to be repaired. The Juncos Racing crew immediately got to work preparing the back-up car and were able to get Parsons fitted and the Australian was able to get out on track for 21 laps.

The busy Juncos Racing crew was also able to get the No. 31 of Nicolas Dapero repaired and the rookie driver was able to turn 21 laps.

Pro Mazda Unveils Incentive Program in Advance of PM-18 Debut
— Vital Mazda Road to Indy Step to see Enhancements in 2016/2017 —

PALMETTO, Fla. (July 6, 2016) – The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires has long served as a vital step for today’s top drivers, counting Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe, Graham Rahal, Conor Daly, Matthew Brabham, Jack Hawksworth, Sage Karam and Spencer Pigot amongst its many graduates. Approaching a transition year until the debut of the new Mazda-powered Tatuus PM-18 in 2018, Andersen Promotions – in conjunction with its partners Mazda and Cooper Tires – today announced a series of enhancements to the current program.

Next season, the Pro Mazda calendar will see a reduction in the number of events from eight to six and the number of races from 16 to 14, to reduce budgets while still providing a proper mix of circuits for driver training with one oval, one street circuit and four road course events. The PM-18 will be made available to teams as early as June 1, providing an opportunity for a summer testing program with the new chassis in preparation for 2018. Andersen Promotions will also offer teams a $5,000 discount on the PM-18 for each driver who commits to running the entire 2017 season in addition to its almost 20 percent full-season entry fee discount.

The Pro Mazda champion’s Mazda scholarship to advance to Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires in 2018 will be increased from $590,300 to $790,300 next year bringing the total event and year end prizes to over $1.1M. The Cooper Tires Pole Award will be increased to $1,500 per race. A new National Class prize package, for drivers 20 years of age and older competing in cars running in Pro Mazda specification and meeting the older Star Mazda technical requirements by SCCA FA Class competition rules, also will be introduced.

Additional enhancements include a one-day Indy Lights test for each of the top-three finishers in the championship, and a new Pro Mazda Rookie of the Year Mazda Car Award which features a new Mazda street car of choice to the winning driver.

With three venues remaining on the 2016 calendar, Andersen Promotions is offering extra financial incentives for drivers to gain valuable seat time in advance of next season.

An additional $52,500 has been allocated to the 2016 prize structure. Championship Class finishing positions of sixth through tenth will now earn an increased purse of $1,000 for each race. In the National Class, $17,500 has been added with $1,500 for a race win, $750 for second and $250 for a third-place finish.

For non-points entrants for the remainder of this season, race entry fees will be reduced by 50 percent for the Championship Class and will be free for all National Class entries. A team bonus in the form of a $500 credit off of 2017 team registration fees will be issued for each new car/driver added for one or more races in 2016 up to a total credit of $2500. Teams adding a new driver for all remaining events will also receive one free set of Cooper tires.

“All of us at Andersen Promotions, Mazda and Cooper Tires are fully committed to the Pro Mazda class and to securing the healthy grids we have seen the past few years,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “With the PM-18 making its competition debut in 2018, we felt the need for a fresh and strong commitment now and I have to thank our great partners in Mazda and Cooper Tires for their increased support.

“We believe the opportunity to reduce budgets with a shortened season next year combined with a summer testing program of the new car and an increased prize package and program incentives will open the door for more drivers to join the series. Our 2016 incentives are designed for drivers to have the opportunity to jump in now and compete at three great venues.”

Seven races remain on the 2016 calendar with doubleheader events on the streets of Toronto (July 16/17) and at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (July 30/31), and a tripleheader round at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca season finale (September 9-11).

“Mazda shares Dan Andersen’s enthusiasm for the Pro Mazda category, and we believe strongly in providing value to our entrants,” said John Doonan, Director of Motorsports for Mazda North American Operations. “A large increase in the champion’s scholarship amount, along with so many other enhancements – like a brand new Mazda for the Rookie of the Year – will add to the value of the entire Mazda Road to Indy ladder system. This is also good for our fans, as we strive to put a larger field of cars on the track while anticipating the new PM-18 chassis.”
