RACE 2 REPORT
06.25.17
On a breezy, cool morning outside of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Indy Lights drivers of Andretti Autosport took to Road America for Race 2 of their weekend doubleheader, Round 9 of the 2017 season. Heading west next, the teams shift focus to their second oval race of the year, competing at Iowa Speedway for Round 10, July 8 and 9.
Action from Newton, Iowa, broadcasts Sunday, July 9, 4 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. For more information, check out AndrettiAutosport.com and IndyLights.com.

No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda
  • Started: 1st // Finished: 3rd
  • Championship: 3 / 14 (161 pts.)
  • Today’s finish earned Herta his fourth podium of the season
“It feels good to be back on the podium! We’ve had a bad month and weekend. We didn’t practice Friday and were only able to go out for half of the qualifying session for Race 1, so we didn’t really have a lot of time to perfect the car before Race 1. To earn the pole and a podium for Race 2, I’m happy. We secured some good points and I think it’s a good rebound – the car felt good. I’m ready to head to Iowa for testing and prepare for the race.”

No. 48 Flip Side Mazda
  • Started: 14th  // Finished: 7th
  • Championship: 10 / 14 (111 pts.)
“Overall, I think from where we started we did a great job in the race. I think I could have had sixth place if I didn’t run out of push-to-passes at the end there. The car was great. The car’s been great all weekend. I think if we can continue to qualify up front like we did yesterday, we’ll be able to stay up front with our race pace. Overall, this weekend is definitively a positive and it’s definitely a confidence booster, so we’ll just go into the next few races and try to push forward for a podium.”

No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda
  • Started: 12th  // Finished: 9th
  • Championship: 11 / 14 (110 pts.)
“The start of the race went really well. I moved up four or five spots on the first lap but just couldn’t keep the car under us during the race. Setup and driving-wise, we just never hit the nail on the head throughout the weekend. There’s definitely something between the way I’m driving the car and the way we’re tackling setup that’s just not working. It’s frustrating, but I think we can definitely use this as a good experience moving forward so we know a little bit better where we need to focus when we’re setting up the car.”

No. 27 Synova Mazda
  • Started: 8th  // Finished: 14th
  • Championship: 4 / 14 (159 pts.)
“Everything was fine during the warm up lap. I had a good start, picked up a few spots and then in the exit of [Turn] 5, I couldn’t change gears and we needed to pit. We never made it back out. We lost a lot of points today, which is a big bummer but we’ll try to bounce back in Iowa. Obviously I’m extremely disappointed; it’s always frustrating when things are out of your control.”

RACE 1
QUALIFYING REPORT

06.23.17

A sun-basked Road America outside of Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, saw the Indy Lights teams practice and qualify for tomorrow’s Race 1. The team takes to the 4.014-mile, 14-turn course to qualify for Race 2 in the morning, while racing at noon CT for the weekend’s first event of the doubleheader.

Coverage of events from Road America broadcast Sunday, June 25, at 11:30 a.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

Ryan Norman
No. 48 Flip Size Mazda
Starting position: 3rd

Earned his highest ever starting position with a fast lap time of 1:53.4742

“We had a great qualifying. I absolutely love this track, and we knew we were fast from testing a couple of weeks ago. Just put it all together in qualifying. I missed out a little bit on a couple corners where I think I could’ve gained a little bit more and maybe had something for pole. Overall, the Andretti Autosport car was fantastic, and I’m really excited to shoot for my first podium tomorrow.”

Nico Jamin
No. 27 Synova Mazda
Starting position: 5th

Clocked a fast time of 1:53.6629 during the 30-minute qualifying session

“A finishing result of fifth is not too bad. We have (Kyle) Kaiser, who we are fighting for a championship with, right in front of us. Qualified fifth – we can race from there – but for some reason, the car did not feel quite right. I was fighting a lot of oversteer and we tried different set-ups and nothing seemed to fix it. We’ll need to go back and put our finger on what is wrong. My teammate, Ryan (Norman) had a strong result in qualifying, so we will see what the differences are in the car and try to have a good race tomorrow.”

Dalton Kellett
No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda
Starting position: 6th

Recorded a fast time of 1:53.8206 in Race 1 qualifying

“I think for the 28 program that was definitely a good run, we were farther down the charts in practice and over lunch the four of us teammates sat down and came up with a good set up to go on track with for the first qualifying session. The first run was a little weird cause we went out with a lot of understeer and came into the pits to make a quick change and it was like a whole different car when we went back out. Second and third rounds were able to put laps down right away. The car is quick, I think we have a good race car and I’m looking forward to racing tomorrow afternoon.”

Colton Herta
No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda
Starting position: 13th

Suffered from a mechanical issue in the morning practice, and in result was unable to turn a lap before today’s qualifying session

“Pretty poor so far this weekend. We haven’t had a lot of running, just had mechanical issues that weren’t really in our control. That’s how it is sometimes. So, we’ll just go out there and do our best in qualifying tomorrow.”

Indy Lights: GP of Indianapolis Race 1 Report

INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF INDIANAPOLIS
RACE 1 REPORT
05.12.17
Under sunny skies at the Indianpolis Motor Speedway, the Andretti’s Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires foursome took to the Grand Prix Circuit for Round 5 of the 2017 season. Completing practice during a cooler morning session, qualifying saw warm conditions heat up the track, with Nico Jamin nabbing pole position. Jamin went on to capture the team’s fourth-consecutive race win after leading from flag to flag.

The team hits Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Grand Prix Circuit one more time for tomorrow’s second half of the weekend double-header. Fans can catch coverage of Round 5 and 6 Sunday, May 21, at 2 a.m. ET on NBCSN.

Nico Jamin
No. 27 DuraMAX Powered by RelaDyne Mazda
Started: 1 // Finished: 1
Championship: 2nd (tied, 107 pts)
Second Indy Lights win for Jamin who also collected two victories in Indianapolis during his USF2000 campaign
“This is just amazing. I am so happy to be back in victory lane at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I was actually here two years ago in USF2000 with the same car colors. I’m just so happy for the whole team, DuraMAX and RelaDyne on board for the whole month of May and in the first race we brought them into Victory Lane. It’s just so special for me and thank you to everyone.”

Ryan Norman
No. 48 Flip Side Mazda
Started: 11th // Finish 8th
Championship: 11th (57 pts)
Secured his fourth top-10 finish of the season
“Overall the top eight is pretty good for where we started – I’ll take that. We had good pace during the race, so I think if we can qualify up front a little bit better, we will be able to stay there. Hopefully going into tomorrow we’ll push really hard and start further up in the field for Race 2.”

Dalton Kellett
No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda
Started: 10th // Finished: 13th
Championship: 12th (52 pts)
Suffered front wing damage on Lap 1 resulting in lost track time as the wing was changed
“I wouldn’t normally consider myself to be a negative person, but this was a very frustrating day. It all starts with qualifying, we need to get up near the front to avoid some of the incidents on the start. It’s really imperative to be up there, especially with how competitive it is here; you need every spot you can get. We’ll just have to put our heads down, forget about today and move on to tomorrow. Congrats to Nico on the win and great work to the team for that.”

Colton Herta
No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda
Started: 6th // Finished: 13
Championship: 1 (110 pts)
Collected debris early in the race resulting in loss of tire pressure and forcing an unplanned pit stop
“It was a good race off the start, we made it from sixth to second in the first turn and then, unfortunately, we must have hit something and had a slow (tire) puncture that forced us to pit. Not the result we wanted, we were quick enough to win I think. We’ll be going for it tomorrow.”

INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES RACE 2 REPORT

INDY LIGHTS PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
MAZDA
04.23.17

It was a wet and soggy morning for today’s Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires 400th race, forcing qualifications to cancel on the 2.38-mile road course due to rain-soaked conditions. Setting the field to start by points, clouds cleared in time for Colton Herta to win Round 4 from start to finish.

Coverage from Barber Motorsports Park airs Wednesday, April 26 at 12 a.m. ET on NBCSCN. The team returns home next to Indianapolis for Rounds 5 and 6 on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, May 11-13.For more information, check out AndrettiAutosport.com and IndyLights.com.

No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda

  • Started on pole
  • Won, earning his second pole-to-win in four races
“Starting from pole and leading from there, it was all about conserving tires today. We did it perfectly and ended up with an almost ten second gap in the end. Leading the points championship is great, but it’s still really early in the season. We’re for sure going to try and defend it throughout the year. That said, I can’t wait to race at Indianapolis coming up, especially on the oval. I’m really looking forward to May.”

No. 27 Synova Mazda

  • Started 4th
  • Finished 3rd, giving the Frenchman his second podium of the season
“Overall, it was a very good weekend for the Andretti team! P1 and P3 for me this weekend is very, very good for the points championship. It wasn’t good leaving St. Pete where we did, but now we’re up back there and hunting my teammate [Colton Herta]. He had a great race from starting on pole, which is a big advantage here. I feel like we did what we could and scored big points this weekend, but now we focus on the month of May.”

No. 48 Flip Side Mazda

  • Started 13th
  • Finished 9th, getting his first Top 10 for the season
“Today was very good from where we started the race. I made a fun pass on my teammate [Dalton Kellett] towards the end, and we gave each other enough room. Me, Shelby [Blackstock] and Dalton had a tricky situation going into Turn 1 going three-wide, and that wasn’t going to work so I kind of bailed out. Overall, it was a really fun race here. Front tires fell off a little towards the end, and that’s when I started to struggle during the run with Shelby. I wish we got qualifying in this morning after starting P13, but we’ll go harder and get ready for Indianapolis in May. I’m really looking forward to racing in front of fans at Indy.”

No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda

  • Started 12th
  • Finished 10th after spirited battle with teammate Norman
“We had a great start to the race, jumping up to fifth. The first couple of laps were awesome, taking advantage of push-to-pass on the second lap. It felt like we had a really good car. I honestly feel we could’ve fought for a fourth place finish. We had a little contact on the start causing some damage to the car. After about the first 12 laps, it got to the point I just couldn’t turn the wheel anymore and was having to compromise in corners. It was kind of heartbreaking, but I had so much fun battling my teammate [Ryan Norman]. Not much you can do when someone catches you in your mirrors, but I hope Ryan got some good racing experience because I didn’t make it easy on him!”

ROOKIE COLTON HERTA CLAIMS VICTORY AT ST. PETE – And Race Reports

Rookie Captures First Career Win on the Streets of St. Petersburg

Starting from the pole position, Colton Herta scored his first Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires victory at today’s 45-lap race on the streets of St. Petersburg, driving the No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda for Andretti-Steinbrenner Racing. The American rookie and son of retired open-wheel standout Bryan Herta, earns the team its first win of the season.
Herta joins the newly-formed Andretti-Steinbrenner Racing for the 2017 season, After making his formula car debut in 2014’s Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series, Herta moved to the UK-based MSA Formula series in 2015 as the youngest driver and only American. He snagged his first win at Snetterton Circuit while helping the United States to a Nations Cup win.
Competing in the EuroFormula Open series in 2016, Herta earned one win and three podiums in two British Formula 3 events last season.
Today’s win is the 31st win for the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires Program. Since 2005, Andretti Autosport has earned two series titles (‘08/Matos and ’09/Hildebrand) and one Freedom 100 win (’16/Stoneman).

RACE 2 REPORT
03.12.17
Race 2 from the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, set up to be a successful event for the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team. Coming off a second-place finish in yesterday’s Race 1, Colton Herta led the pack to the green flag for this weekend’s final race. Dalton Kellett began closely behind, taking the grid from the third position – his career best start in the Indy Lights series. Nico Jamin was determined to pull his No. 26 Synova Mazda into a top-three finish, but his day was cut short when contact was made on Lap 1 after starting sixth. Ryan Norman continued to build on yesterday’s top 10, starting 14th and earning the ninth spot.

Fans can catch coverage of Race 2 from the Streets of St. Petersburg Saturday, March 18, at 2 a.m. ET on NBCSCN.

Up next, the foursome takes to Barber Motorsports Park April 21-23 for Rounds 3 and 4 of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires 2017 season.

No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda

  • Started from pole, the first pole start of his rookie Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires career
  • Captured his first win on the streets of St. Petersburg after leading all 45 laps of Race 2 and leaves Florida as the championship points leader
“It’s amazing to come back from Europe and into the Indy Lights paddock and be winning right away. It’s a good start and we’re going to keep it rolling. (Urruita) is probably the toughest person out here right now because most of us are rookies, and he knows the tires, he knows the car when it’s all cold. For sure it was hard to hold him off, but we ended up doing it and had a gap at the end. I was pushing hard, harder than I did in qualifying. My heart rate is up right now!”

No. 48 Flip Side Mazda

  • Started in 14th position
  • After a challenging weekend, made several impressive passes to cross the finish line in ninth position
“The race went pretty well. I didn’t get the best start and spun out going into Turn 2, I lightly clipped the inside curb there because there was no room. Luckily, the double yellow came out right after and I was able to catch up to the field and get a pretty good restart but wish we could have been just a little bit better and a little bit closer. When the two guys in front of me went into Turn 1 and kind of were fighting there and I did an over under move on through them and was able to pick off those guys. After that I was able to hold the pace. There are some things we can definitely work on from this weekend, but for the first time being in St. Pete and on a street course, I am pretty happy with the results. I think we will be really fast on the permanent road courses like Barber where I have more experience. Going to take these couple weeks we have off and train hard and come back for the next race even stronger.”

No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda

  • Started from third, his highest starting position in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires
  • Finished 12th after making contact with the wall resulting in a spin
“Frustrating end to our day. We started third and thought we had a good car and our brakes were good during the race. I need to look at the video and data to see what happened when I lost it out of Turn 9, I’m really disappointed with that. We have a bit of a break between now and Barber where we know our pace is quick. We were good there last year so looking forward to getting some good runs at qualifying and hopefully getting a podium next race. Congrats to Colton for P1. Overall good result for the team, but a disappointing day for us.”

No. 27 Synova Mazda

  • Started in sixth position for today’s Race 2
  • Made contact on Lap 1, forcing early retirement and a

    14th-place result
“I got through Turn 1 nice and clean, and then I went through Turn 2 and I had the advantage. I was in front of [Alberico] and there was just no room for two cars there. We touched which sent me into the wall and ended my race. I am okay. It was not big contact, I mean I just clipped the wall and ended my day. The Synova crew gave me a good car and now we’ll just have to fight to earn points in Barber.”

Race Report – INDY LIGHTS PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES

INDY LIGHTS PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
MAZDA INDY LIGHTS GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG PRESENTED BY COOPER TIRES
RACE 1 REPORT
03.11.17
The streets of St. Petersburg, Florida, provided the Andretti Autosport Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires team with a picturesque backdrop and a challenge for Race 1 of the season-opening double-header weekend. After starting the first practice of the season strong, gloomy clouds of bad luck seemed to hang over three of the four drivers in the first set of qualifications.

The field of 15 will return to the streets early Sunday morning for Race 2, where Herta will start from the pole position followed by Kellett in third, Jamin in sixth and Norman 14th.

Fans can catch coverage of Rounds 1 and 2 from the Streets of St. Petersburg Saturday, March 18, at 2 a.m. ET on NBCSCN.

No. 98 Deltro Energy Mazda

  • Started in fifth position
  • Finished second, scoring a podium finish in his first Indy Lights outing
“This was a great race. We had an OK start, dropping down a position from fifth to sixth and just moved my way up from there. The push to pass worked amazingly and all the overtakes were perfect. We got up to P2 and collected some points. It’s hard to say what tomorrow will bring. We’re running in the morning and conditions will be different, but it’s going to be good. We’re starting on the pole so that will help too. Being here in St. Pete with Andretti-Steinbrenner Racing, and having the Yankees spring training facility just up the street has made for a great weekend so far.”

No. 27 Synova Mazda

  • Started in 11th position
  • Battled through the field to gain four positions, earning a seventh place finish
“From where we started, there was nothing we could really do so today was about us scoring as many points as possible. Thanks to the whole crew for putting the car back together after the touch in qualifying that damaged the right side of the car. Everything got fixed and the car as good, we were able to come from P11 to P7. We’re going to start sixth tomorrow and will try and run for the podium.”

No. 48 Flip Side Mazda

  • Started in 15th position
  • After a difficult weekend, the rookie earned a 10th place result
“Overall the start of the race went pretty well, I was able to pick off a couple of people and then was able to hold my gap until about two thirds through the race and then the tires started to fall off. I was struggling to find grip out there. We have a couple things to work on but we should be good for Race 2 tomorrow.”

No. 28 K-Line Insulators USA Mazda

  • Started 12th
  • Claimed the 12th spot after making contact on Lap 1 during a pass attempt
“It wasn’t the race that we wanted. I just got a little overcommitted in Turn 1 and got locked up and ran into Santi. It’s unfortunate for both of us. I didn’t want to start the year on something like that, but we’ll move on from here. We’re starting P3 tomorrow so we’ll be in a great spot and really looking forward to that race. All four of our cars are running pretty quick; looking forward to show what we’ve got tomorrow.”
