CAPE MOTORSPORTS ADDS MATHIAS SOLER TO F4 US CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD

Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion advances with team for 2017 season

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA (February 25, 2017) – Cape Motorsports is pleased to announce the second driver of their new F4 United States Championship team. Colombian native Mathias Soler will join the squad for the 2017 campaign, coming off a strong season that saw him win the Lucas Oil School of Racing Formula Race Series championship in its inaugural season. The 14-year-old driver who lives in Atlanta, Georgia spent his development years winning kart races and championships in South America and abroad, and he has been racing in assorted US karting series for the last couple of years as well.

“As a team, we are really excited to have Mathias onboard for the season,” said Dominic Cape, co-owner of Cape Motorsports. “The two-day test we just completed went really well and we’re all looking forward to see him in action.”

Soler has been karting since he was just seven-years-old and gained great success in Colombia before move to Italy in 2015 to join Flowers Racing to run the Rok Cup Italy series. He also competed in the Rok Cup International Final in South Garda, Italy.  The annual event draws Rok Cup drivers from all over the world and is one of the largest karting events each year. Soler finished in the top-10 in a massively talented group of 80 international competitors.

Soler returned to America last year and made the jump to formula car racing, receiving his competition license at the Skip Barber Racing School before participation in a number of lapping sessions and regional races with the program, coming away with a race win and a runner-up finish in the process. Soler went on to win the inaugural Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series championship on the strength of six poles, five race wins and three track records.

The team will return to their testing program this weekend for an official series test at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans. Soler will join the previously-announced driver Steve Bamford at the test.  The opening round of the six-event series will be a tripleheader at Homestead-Miami Speedway on April 8-9.

F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda News – MOMENTUM MOTORSPORTS SIGNS SKYLAR ROBINSON

MOMENTUM MOTORSPORTS SIGNS SKYLAR ROBINSON

Top-five F4 U.S. Championship inaugural season driver returns for a title

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 23, 2017) – Full-season entries continue to roll-in for the 2017 season of the Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda. Skylar Robinson of Augusta, Georgia, confirmed that he will return to F4 U.S. for his chance to capture the championship title with Momentum Motorsports.

Robinson, 20, had a successful run for the $25,000 championship grand prize last season. After joining Momentum Motorsports at Round 4 of the inaugural F4 U.S. season, Robinson visited the podium five times with three third place finishes, one second place finish and a single win. Robinson ended the season clenching fifth place after a strong points battle between the top five competitors.

“I’m more motivated than ever,” said Robinson. “Last year we ended up fifth despite missing a fifth of the season. I think with some prep-time we should be in good shape for the championship. Momentum Motorsports has so much heart and puts so much effort in, the team deserves to be rewarded.”

Robinson will continue to coach his rookie teammate Kent Vaccaro of Plattsburgh, New York, throughout the season.

“It will be a different dynamic from last year since I’ll be coaching and driving this season,” Robinson said. “However, I can relate to the track conditions better. The competition is going to be stout for sure but we’ll be ready.”

Momentum Motorsports has one more additional slot to fill on its three-car roster before the first F4 U.S. Championship event at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, April 8-9.

“We are very happy with our driver line up thus far,” said Momentum Motorsports team manager Phil Picard Jr. “Skylar brings race-winning experience back to the team, and Kent has shown great talent and poise in the car through testing.  More importantly I think the chemistry we’ve enjoyed will lead to a championship.”

Robinson is the seventh confirmed F4 U.S. veteran to return for 2017. F4 U.S. veterans Davis Durrett of Carmel, Indiana, Raphael Forcier of Montreal, Steve Bamford of Toronto, Baltazar Leguizamon of Buenos Aires, Austin Kaszuba of Burleson, Texas, and Alan Miller of Indianapolis join Robinson on the grid.

Davis Durrett, Raphael Forcier, Chris Archinaco and Vincent Khristov to Expand F4 U.S. Grid

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 22, 2017) – The Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda continues to attract new teams and drivers for its second season. Indy Motorsport Group (IMG), a new Indianapolis-based multi-car race team formed by Indianapolis 500 winning team-owner Steve Newey and Dean Durrett of Durrett Racing Group, confirmed its four-car line-up.

Davis Durrett of Carmel, Indiana, Raphael Forcier of Montreal, and series-newcomers Chris Archinaco of Pittsburgh, and Vincent Khristov of Delray Beach, Florida, finalized the grid for IMG.

“We have assembled an elite and competitive team that is more than capable of winning the F4 U.S. Championship in 2017,” said Newey.

Durrett returns to the F4 U.S. series after finishing thirteenth in the inaugural season. Durrett earned points for Primus Racing and Durrett Racing Group. Forcier comes back for a second-chance to earn FIA Super License points after barely missing the points cut-off during his first season of open-wheel racing. Forcier finished ninth in points.

The last two seats filled by IMG are rookies to F4 U.S. but the pair have earned their share of victories in formula racing. Khristov participated in the 2015 Bertil Roos 5 Day Road Racing School and the 2015-2016 Skip Barber Winter Series. He holds the track record for the Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series event at NOLA Motorsports Park in New Orleans. Archinaco participated in eight races of the 2016 Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series in 2016, including his first career win at Lime Rock Park. Archinaco finished second in series points.

“The team IMG has established for the 2017 season is world class,” said Archinaco. “We’ve all raced each other in amateur series and now have the chance to push each other as teammates racing for the championship.”

IMG held its first test of the season earlier in February and will travel to NOLA Motorsports Park Feb. 25-26 to participate in the first official F4 U.S. series test.

They are an organization with a long and proud history, and we’re honored to be among their road racing Championships. On another note, we’d like to thank SCCA Pro Racing for their 11 year partnership and wish them the best in their own endeavors in junior open-wheel racing.”

“USAC is returning to our roots with the addition of road course racing in 2017. I am excited with our new FRP partnership and look forward to growing the sport together,” added Kevin Miller, president and CEO, USAC.

TSO Ladder Notes from Steve

  • The highlights of the seven event Formula Race Promotions (FRP) Series (F1600 Formula F Championship Series, F2000 Championship Series and Formula Atlantic) calendar are an appearance with Pirelli World Challenge at Virginia International Raceway, an appearance at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, two visits to the historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and an October finale alongside Trans-Am at New Jersey Motorsports Park.
  • It has been a rough few weeks for the “Pro” side of Sports Car Club of America house. They have lost the sanctioning agreements to Mazda MX-5 Cup (INDYCAR), Pirelli World Challenge (USAC), and now the three Formula Race Promotion Series (USAC). This means that Trans-Am and the F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda are the only remaining sanctions for SCCA Pro Racing.
  • While it may seem odd for long-time Midget, Sprit Car and Silver Crown sanctioning body USAC to sanction road racing series, it certainly isn’t unprecedented. The Speedway, Indiana based organization was the sanctioning body for the premier USAC Road Racing Championship from 1958 through 1962. Side note: Roger Penske was the final champion in 1962 while driving Climax powered Cooper T53.
  •  USAC more recently held the sanction for other open wheel ladder series such the Mini-Indy (Super Vee) in the 80’s and F2000 in the 1990’s.

F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda – Mid-Ohio qualifying – Kyle Kirkwood

USF4 logo

Kyle Kirkwood and the Primus Racing Team will go down in the motorsport annals as the inaugural pole-winner in the F4 United States Championship Powered by Honda.

Kirwood, an 18 year-old from Jupiter, Florida, who has eight races of F1600 Formula F Championship Series experience and has also won multiple karting championships, pipped JDX Racing’s Darren Keane by just over one-tenth of a second with a last lap flyer.

Keane’s JDX Racing teammate, and current Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda rookie Cameron Das will be starting inside of the second row. The 15 year-old Das will be starting beside Michael Goodyear. Driving for Goodyear, Miller, and Vinateri Motorsports, the Carmel, Indiana native, and current Ball State University student will be making his first formula car start after a stand-out karting career.

Representing the fourth and fifth different teams that qualified within the first six positions, Konrad Czaczyk (Leading Edge Grand Prix) and Raphael Forcier (Group-A Racing) will make up the third row.  The pair of previous Skip Barber Series race winners were the last two drivers to qualify within one second of pole-sitter Kirkwood.

Only one red flag interrupted the half-hour session. Davis Durrett (Primus Racing) and Balthazar Lequizamon both had off-track excursions about ten minutes into the session. The No. 1 Momentum Motorsport machine of Lequizamon did sustain some left rear suspension damage, and the crew will have to go to work to get the Honda/Crawford ready for Race #1.

The 14 entries that are propelled by 160 HP powerplants based on those found in the Honda Civic® Type R® will be back on track at for their inaugural race at 2:25pm.

We’ll be back with much more after this afternoon’s race.

Series and partners pleased with car’s debut

INDIANAPOLIS (March 28, 2016) – On the track for its first official test drive last week, the car for the new Formula 4 United States Championship powered by Honda exceeded all expectations as the series prepares for its debut in May.

The F4 U.S. Championship, organized and sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing, conducted the official test with two test drivers at Carolina Motorsports Park, a 2.23-mile road course in Kershaw, South Carolina.

The developmental test marked the first time the F4 U.S. Championship car took to the track. It featured a Honda Racing/HPD engine and Pirelli tires mounted onto a Crawford Composites chassis.

“After attending the first track test, I was very impressed with the car,” said Derrick Walker, President and CEO of SCCA Pro Racing. “This car is just what we needed as an entry-level formula car, and it was another milestone toward our first race on May 27 at Lime Rock Park.”

Over the course of the testing, adjustments were made to the ride height as well as wing, shock and spring adjustments, allowing the car to improve its performance each lap.

“The test was a howling success,” Crawford Composites President Max Crawford said. “The car ran flawlessly for two days and got better and better with each adjustment.”

The F4 series will consist of 15 races at five classic tracks when it kicks off at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, on May 27-28 and is scheduled to wrap-up Oct. 8-10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida.
