Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca – “Soul Red Finale” qualifying – Saturday 11:38am

USF2000 logo

After dominating both practice sessions on Friday, ArmsUp Motorsports veteran Victor Franzoni will start on pole for the second time in 2016. The 21-year old is a long-shot to win the championship, but scoring the single point for pole certainly won’t hurt. Next up, Franzoni will need to secure his fourth Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire win of his career.

Surprisingly it’s only the Brazilian’s second career pole (the other one came in Toronto earlier this year).

Franzoni set his quickest lap very early in the session and had the luxury of sitting on pit-road for 13 minutes to see if anybody could catch him. The team did send him back out in the final few minutes just to make sure he could cover anybody that was able to go quicker.

The lap of 1:26.307 ended up over three-tenths of a second ahead of the next quickest driver.

After trailing Parker Thompson, his Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammate and championship chaser in both practice sessions, Anthony Martin was able to dig deep and beat the Canadian to the front row by only six-hundredths of a second.

Pabst Racing’s Jordan Lloyd will join Thompson on the second row. Martin and Thompson’s Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammate Nikita Lastochkin will start this afternoon’s race in fifth, equaling his best start of the season.

Aussie Luke Gabin and Kiwi newcomer Michael Scott will start sixth and seventh.

For fans of Geography, four of the first seven drivers are form the Continent of Australasia.

The half-hour qualifying session for the first of two Cooper Tires Grand Prix of Monterey Powered by Mazda began promptly at 10:50am

Halfway through the 30 minute session and the top five were: Franzoni, Martin, Thompson, Lloyd, and Michael Scott.

The entire session ran green.

Seven of the 17 drivers that took part in qualifying were all within one second of Franzoni’s pole lap.

MRTI logo

Good morning from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca where it’s once again foggy and we are on a delay for the second day in a row.

The first track activity for the Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire, Pro Mazda qualifying, was scheduled to get the green flag at 8:35am. Pro Mazda is followed by Indy Lights qualifying at 9:20am, and USF2000 qualifying at 10:05am.

Races for Pro Mazda, Indy Lights and USF2000 are scheduled for 1:05pm, 3pm and 4:05pm respectively.

Here are some notebook type items that we’ve been working on…

Each USF2000 entry receives three brand new sets of Cooper Tire slicks for the two practice sessions, qualifying session and the two 30 minute races.

We had a chance to catch-up with Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tire race-director Tony Cotman to ask him about the penalty handed down to Zach Veach and Belardi Auto Racing after the Watkins Glen International race. The driver and team were both penalized 10 points for a floor height issue. Cotman told TSO that the transgression was fairly minor and that it definitely wasn’t done on purpose. Cotman explained it was the similar to the problem that saw Zachary Claman de Melo lose his second place qualifying effort at Barber Motorsports Park in April.

TSO had a chance to catch-up with Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire veteran Peter Dempsey. The Pro Mazda and Indy Lights race winner has been leading the Juncos Racing Pro Mazda technical team for a few years, and he expects to be back with the Ricardo Juncos led team again next year. The Irishman has been spending quite a bit of time coaching and driving race cars at Autobahn County Club just outside of Chicago, Illinois, and is actively pursuing a sports car ride for next season. Dempsey and his wife are also expecting their first child in November.

Zach Veach – 85th start on Sunday
Dalton Kellett – 75th start on Saturday
Neil Alberico – 75th start on Saturday
Kyle Kaiser – 65th start on Saturday
Garett Grist – 60th start on Sunday

If Juan Piedrahita had not called it quits on his season, he would have made his 100th career MRTI start on Sunday

Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda from Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca – Friday practice #1 – 12:10pm

USF2000 logo

Not surprisingly, the first Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda session was led by the three championship contenders. Victor Franzoni led the way, and was followed by Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin.

It was no surprise that the three veterans led the field, but the amount they were ahead of the field was somewhat of a surprise. Thompson and Martin were both within three-tenths of a second from Franzoni’s quickest lap of 1:26.791, but the rest of the field were all over one second behind the Brazilians top lap time.

The remainder of the top five were Nikita Lastochkin and Robert Megennis, who was the quickest rookie.

The quickest of the three drivers making their series debut was Team Pelfrey’s Phillippe Denes who had the 8th quickest lap of the session.

The entire session ran green, and the 18 drivers turned a total of 243 laps. John Cummiskey Racing newcomer Michael Scott led the way with 16 circuits of the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course.

The 18-car Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda field took to the 2.238-mile, 11-turn Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca road course for their first practice session of the “Soul Red Finale” weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (August 31, 2016) – Dutch driver Rinus VK today announced he will be making his debut in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda in 2017 with powerhouse team Carlin.

“We have spoken with several teams in the last few months, but when the opportunity to join Carlin Benik came along I didn’t have to think long. Making the deal with Carlin Benik is an important step for us. Having secured the seat I now feel I truly am an USF2000 driver”, Rinus VK says.

Having announced his intent to compete on the Mazda Road To Indy ladder system in May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Rinus now has his plans firmed up, and Racing Director Trevor Carlin couldn’t be happier about having secured the teenager for the team’s initial foray into USF2000.

“Sander Dorsman, team manager at MP Motorsport, tipped me about Rinus”, Trevor explains. “I know Sander very well from the GP2 Series and respect his judgement. I started to follow Rinus and soon knew he would be the perfect young talent for our new USF2000 team at Carlin Benik.”

Carlin is one of the winningest teams in the history of junior open-wheel racing, having won 15 championships, scored over 300 race wins and 800 podiums. The team has worked with Verizon IndyCar Series champion Will Power as well as race winners Josef Newgarden, Charlie Kimball and Takuma Sato. They’ve also had a crucial role in the development of F1 drivers such as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Rosberg, and Rinus plans on taking full advantage of the team’s heritage and infrastructure.  Carlin have joined forces with top US kart team Benik, to create a strong package for the team’s debut in USF2000 in 2017.

Owned and operated by long-time karting industry members Ben Cruttenden and Nick Mitchell, Benik Kart operates out of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, close to Carlin’s US base in Delray Beach, where the team’s USF2000 cars will be prepared. Combining the expertise of both teams with young drivers, Carlin will provide all personnel and technical expertise when the Carlin Benik squad take to the track.

Rinus is delighted with the signed contract: “Carlin is known to be strong in new competitions and an endless number of Carlin drivers have made it to the top in motorsport all over the world. I’m sure Trevor and his team will have the new USF2000 chassis built up in the best possible way, so I think they can help me to perform on top of my ability.”

Rinus is one of three Dutch drivers on the renowned KNAF Talent First development program. The program has seen drivers such as Max Verstappen rise through the ranks en route to the top levels of the sport. He is also supported by Holland’s largest supermarket chain, Jumbo, which have been supporters of racing for several decades.

Rinus and Carlin Benik will begin their off-season preparations at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course via the Chris Griffis Memorial test on October 8-9, 2016. The date will mark the first opportunity for teams and drivers to sample the all new Tatuus USF-17 racecar that will be utilized for the 2017 USF2000 season.

If you only look at the box score, it looks like ArmsUp Motorsports Victor Franzoni had no problems cruising to his first win of the season and third career USF2000 victory.

But, it was anything but easy for the 20 year-old, who had to defend against multiple pass for lead attempts from Anthony Martin.

After taking pole for the first USF2000 race of the weekend, and the single point that goes with it, Martin lead his Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammate Parker Thompson 218-217.

After the checkered flag fell on the 22 lap race, it was Thompson, the only Canadian in the field, who held a fifteen point lead over Australian Martin.

The first race of the weekend in Toronto saw the 19 Mazda MZR 2.0L powered car of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series take to the 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place temporary street course under sunny skies at 11:30am.

Starting in second, Franzoni used a great start to out brake pole-sitter Martin into Turn 1 to snag his first lead of the 2016 season.

On Lap 7, National Class driver Brenden Puderbach tagged the wall at the exit of Turn 1 and the yellow flag came out 10 minutes into the 30 minute race.

The No. 15 came to rest in the middle of the track and as the Holmatro Safety Team attended to his stricken car, the No. 22 of Garth Rickards had to take evasive action when he entered the caution area with too much speed. Rickards later was penalized and had to serve a drive-thru.

The race restarted on Lap 9, and while Matin pressured Franzoni into Turn 3, Thompson was able to get underneath Lloyd to retake the final spot on the podium.

Martin continued to hound Franzoni, while Thompson made head-way and put serious pressure on Martin.

With the top-three all running together, second place Martin made a mistake under pressure from his pressure his teammate Thompson and nosed into the tire barriers at the exit of Turn 8. The yellow flag flew as the Holmatro Safety Team attend to the No. 8 Cape Motorsports with /WTR machine.

The race went back to green on Lap 17 and Lloyd was able to get through Turn 1 and Turn 2 with a better run than Thompson, and was able to get by the 18 year-old points leader in Turn 3.

The driver of the race award goes to Robert Megennis. After a mechanical issue kept current Rookie Of The Year leader from turning any competitive laps in qualifying, the Team Pelfrey was able to get the problem fixed.  However, the 16 year-old started the race in the 18th spot and was able to get by 13 of his fellow drivers to finish an impressive fifth. It was the third top five of the season for the New York, New York native.

The No. 20 of Clint McMahan and the No. 77 of Sam Chastain did not start the race.

After Puderbach’s contact, Eric Filgueiras took home National Class honors by finishing 14th overall.

The top five in the USF2000 championship after today’s race are:

1 -> Parker Thompson – 239

2 -> Anthony Martin – 224

3 -> Victor Franzoni – 206

4- > Jordan Lloyd – 184

5 -> Luke Gabin – 168

The lone Canadian entered for the Allied Building Products USF2000 Grand Prix of Toronto double header in Toronto is Parker Thompson. The 17 year-old has spent the last couple of days flat-out doing media appearances across T.O., and the Red Deer, Alberta native was also flat-out on the 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place temporary street course, leading the combined USF2000 time-sheet.

First session recap:

The Honda Indy Toronto weekend began promptly at 8am when the buzz of the Mazda MZR 2.0L engines powering the USF2000 series began echoing around the 11-turn, 1.786-mile Exhibition Place temporary street course. The buzz didn’t last long though as Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing) and Robert Megennis (Team Pelfrey) had separate incidents on their out-laps.

Rookie Megennis made a mistake at Turn 8 and slid into the barriers. Further down the track, Lloyd made significant contact with the concrete barriers in Turn 11. The No. 21 from Pabst Racing hit the barriers hard enough to move the barriers, and suffered significant damage to three of the four corners. (More on the Lloyd situation below).

The track went back to green after a 10+ minute delay to repair the barriers, and the USF2000 field were able to complete five or six laps before a simultaneous red/checkered flag ended the session when Anthony Martin made contact in Turn 8 and Garth Rickards spun in the off-camber Turn 10.

TSO had a chance to chat with Rickards after the session. The 23 year-old told us that overall, the track is quite a bit bumpier, and the final Turn 8 through Turn 11 section is certainly tricky. Rickards went on to explain that he thinks that section will require a “slow is fast” approach.

Martin told TSO that Turn 8 is a little narrower this year, and that caught him out when he was pushing. TSO note: the barrier on the inside of the corner was moved at least two feet into the racing line this year, making the corner slower as well as narrower.

Due to a lack of funding, there was some question whether Luke Gabin would make the trip to Toronto, but the 21 year-old who currently sits fifth in the championship standings was able to find the funding to continue. The Australian that is currently living in Indianapolis, Indiana told TSO that the track wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be, and that keeping your car in one piece would certainly be the name of game this weekend.

The first session was led by Cape Motorsports with /WTR’s Martin, and he was joined in the top five by his teammates Parker Thompson in second, Jordan Cane in fourth, and Nikita Lastochkin in fifth. The last member of the top five, was ArmsUp Motorsports veteran Victor Franzoni.

Session 2

The second USF2000 session of Friday began at 1:45pm under overcast skies and the half-hour practice quickly ground to a stop when a red flag came out for the No. 92 of Luke Gabin, who ground to a halt at the exit of Turn 3. He received a tow-in from the Holmatro Safety Team, and was not able to get back out. TSO was able to confirm with JAY Motorsports team owner Jay Green that the problem was not terminal.

For the second session in a row, the exit of Turn 11 bit another driver when Clint McMahan had a hard impact, knocking the right front off the No. 20 RJB Motorsports machine. With only five minutes left in session, the red flag also caused an end to the session.

Unfortunately for championship contender Jordan Lloyd, the Pabst Racing crew determined that the No. 21 that Lloyd crashed in the first practice session was unrepairable. That set team principal Augie Pabst, III in search of a solution.

Fortunately for Lloyd, John Cummiskey Racing, who Lloyd contested the first four rounds of the 2015 USF2000 championship with, entered the picture. The Brownsburg, Indiana based team had an extra car become available this weekend when Ayla Agren’s funding unfortunately fell through at the last minute (more on that later). Proving that the Mazda Road To Indy paddock is one big family, Cummiskey has loaned a car to Pabst for the remainder of the weekend.

Despite turning no laps in the first practice session Lloyd was able to recover in the borrowed car and turn the fifth quickest lap of the session.

The Cape Motorsports with /WTR crew was able to get the Burgess BLA sponsored No. 8 of Anthony Martin repaired, and the morning Turn 8 shunt sure didn’t seem to phase the Kalgoorlie, Australia born driver. The 21 year-old was able to put the shunt behind him and turn the third quickest lap of the afternoon session.

Joining Lloyd and Martin in the top five were: Canadian Thompson, who led a USF2000 practice for the third time this season, Franzoni, who in second was 0.3 seconds behind Thompson, and Yufeng Luo (Pabst Racing) who excelled with a win and second place finish at the last street circuit event in St. Petersburg.

TSO had a chance to catch up with Franzoni after the session, and the veteran two time USF2000 winner told us that he has a great car, and that he made a couple of mistakes, and that he expects to be even quicker tomorrow when he able to put a complete lap together.

Leading the way in the National Class was Eric Filgueiras.

The Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series is back on track bright and early on Saturday morning at 7:50am for qualifying. Their first race of the weekend takes place at 11:30am.

JAY Motorsports and Luke Gabin are on quest for sponsorship to make the next USF2000 event.

I came across this post on Facebook earlier today and while it’s not an uncommon tale, it’s a tale that the TSO Ladder needs to do a better job of highlighting and sharing when we hear about it, so please hear us out.

If you are a Toronto based business looking for some extra exposure in your home market, a small business itching to dip a toe in the motorsports sponsorship waters, or just a good samaritan that would like to help a wonderful young man continue his dreams, please get in touch with Jay Green of JAY Motorsports at jaymotorsports1@gmail.com or 304-610-5663, or don’t hesitate to get in contact with steve@tracksideonline.com and I’ll be happy to pass along your info.

More about Luke Gabin the racer:

Luke Gabin - No. 91 - JAY Motorsports

Luke Gabin – No. 91 – JAY Motorsports

Gabin, originally from Perth, Australia, but now living in Indianapolis, Indiana came to the U.S. in 2013 with very little money and the singular goal of one day winning a Verizon IndyCar Series championship.  Gabin won the Australian CIK Stars of Karting KF Pro Light State Championship in Queensland in 2013, that win turned into an opportunity for Gabin to compete in the Skip Barber Karting Shootout.  Gabin, a second year university student joined current IndyCar drivers Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi, and Spencer Pigot as Karting Shootout Champions and for his efforts won a scholarship that allowed him to compete in the full Skip Barber Summer Series.

The 21 year-old destroyed the competition in the 2014 Skip Barber Summer Series, winning 10 of 16 races, parlaying his Summer Series dominance into an invite to the Skip Barber Championship Series Shootout, and a chance to win a $200,000 Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship to use to move up to the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series.

The Shootout was held over three days and included five races, media interviews and instructor evaluations. After three days of intense competition it came down to the last lap of the last race, where Gabin made a pass for the lead of the race that allowed him to beat his fellow competitors to the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship.

Gabin used his $200,000 scholarship to join the all-rookie, first year Team Pelfrey USF2000 squad. Immediately showing he would have the pace to compete during Cooper Tires Winterfest, Gabin also made it clear his race craft needed some work. Gabin’s struggles carried over to the beginning of the 2015 season where he had a slow start to the season with four of his first six results ending up near the back-end up the USF2000 grid.

Clearly learning from his early season struggles, Gabin improved tremendously to finish off the season with eight top 10 finishes in the final 10 races. Included in that were four top-fives, his first podium (at Toronto), and the second quickest lap of the race in Mid-Ohio race #2.  Gabin ended the season in sixth place in the championship and was the third highest placed rookie.

A lack of funding meant no off-season testing, and worse, a bleak outlook for finding a ride for 2016. Just before the season opening event at St. Petersburg, Gabin and JAY Motorsports announced that they had scraped enough funding together to go racing on an event-by-event basis. A strong fourth, and fifth place finish in the season opener allowed Gabin and the team to continue to Barber where they scored another fourth place and also their first podium of the year, a second place finish in the second race of the weekend.

Gabin left Alabama second in points, and has had a few good and a few so-so outings since. The so-so included a 20th place in the first race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road-course and an 11th place on the oval at Lucas Oil Raceway. The good included two more podiums, a nice comeback for a third place finish at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and as part of an all Australian podium during the first race at Road America.

A third place and seventh place finishes were fantastic results at Road America for the squad. The No. 91 suffered a failure of a fairly new engine in the first practice session and it looked like Gabin might have to miss the race weekend, but Team Pelfrey stepped up to lease the JAY Motorsports squad an engine for the weekend. What little budget Gabin had left, went towards making sure they could race at Road America.

More about Luke Gabin the person

One of my favorite things about covering the Mazda Road To Indy is having the opportunity to watch how drivers develop as people, and Gabin has been no different.

It was pretty obvious that after winning just the majority of the races he entered in 2013 and 2014, Gabin’s 2015 start to USF2000 season came as quite a shock to the system, and it showed early on.

“Adversity introduces a man to himself” was one of many eye-opeing piece’s of advice written by H.L. Mencken and it certainly fits this situation.

Once he realized he wasn’t going to win every race, Gabin started to drive with less urgency, and therefore made fewer mistakes.

Gabin’s growth didn’t end last season, as he has continued his obvious maturation during the 2016 season. Not one time has he complained about his dire funding situation, and even though each event might be his last he has continued to drive intelligently.

One thing that I watch very closely when looking at the character of a veteran driver is how they interact with a younger rookie teammate, and it’s here where Gabin has impressed me the most this season. Gabin has taken Cameron Das, a USF2000 rookie, under his wing and the 15 year-old  has definitely benefited from the tutelage of the more experienced Gabin.

It won’t just be Gabin that you will be helping out, you will also be helping out JAY Motorsports and team owner Jay Green. Based in Palmetto, Florida, Green has been part of the USF2000 series since 2012, and after a tough year in 2015 with a driver walking away mid-season, the long-time SCCA competitor doubled-down in 2016 and made a commitment to competing at the pointy end of the grid. Bringing Gabin on board along with hiring experienced and successful engineer Daryl Bear was a big commitment for the family oriented team, but they’ve proven they belong at the top end of the grid, with three podiums, and six top fives. JAY Motorsports currently sits an impressive fourth in the USF2000 team points.
