The USF-17 also spent time testing at the National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park, Barber Motorsports Park, and Road America.

Handling driving duties for the first five days of testing was Joel Miller. Miller is currently the USF2000 driver coach/steward, while also helping develop and pilot Mazda’s factory prototype program in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The 28 year-old with a mechanical engineering degree from the University of California Riverside has previous F2000 experience, was the 2007 Skip Barber National champion and the Pro (Star) Mazda vice -champion in 2008.

Miller told TSO that “getting back into an open wheel car again (Indy Lights in 2011 was his last time), puts a big smile on his face.”

Matthew Brabham, the 2012 USF2000 champion, USF2000 race winner at Lucas Oil Raceway, and 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 participant, took over the testing at the 0.686 mile Brownsburg, Indiana oval.

“It’s an honor to test the new chassis,” said Brabham.

“Today went really smoothly. We had no issues and ran tons of laps. The systems in the car are a big upgrade compared to the old car, which makes it a lot more comfortable to drive.

“It felt really quite different from the old USF2000 car and had different characteristics in the way it drives and handles obviously.”

Scot Elkins, project manager and USF2000/Pro Mazda Race Director, was chosen to by Dan Andersen to lead the bottom two rungs of the Mazda Road To Indy into the car of the future. Elkins, a Terre Haute, Indiana native, has extensive experience dealing with complex projects that involves multiple manufacturers, and was the perfect choice to develop the car that will produce the next generation of open-wheel pilots.

The Indiana State grad, who is also currently the Chief Operating Officer at the Motorsport Safety Foundation served as the Technical Director for Champ Car from 2004 through it’s merger with the Indy Racing League in 2008. During that time Elkins, who has also spent six years leading the IMSA competition department, was the project manager for the introduction of the Atlantic Series Swift 016.a and Champ Car’s DP-01.

Each day of testing consisted of similar programs. Before lunch, Elkins would guide a team of Mazda Road To Indy, Tatuus , Cooper Tire, Elite Engine, Cosworth and PFC engineers, mechanics and technicians while working on basic car set-up through the use of shorter on-track runs.

After a quick break for lunch, the driver would take on a large chunk of the work load, doing multiple race length runs to test the validity of earlier findings.

Sharing a common tub with the Tatuus F4-T014 FIA Formula 4 chassis, the USF-17 features numerous additional safety and performance upgrades.

The Tatuus F4-T014 is most popular F4 chassis in use worldwide and is the basis of the: Italian Formula 4 Championship, ADAC Forumla 4 (Germany, Austria and the Netherlands), SMP F4 Championship (Russia, Sweden, Finland and Estonia), Spanish Formula 4 Championship and the United Arab Emerates Formula 4 Championship.

Jeff Horton, INDYCAR’s director of engineering has been working with Elkins on all of the upgraded safety enhancements which include a double bulkhead, side intrusion panels, front and rear wheel tethers, and an INDYCAR type head surround.

Upgrading the performance from a standard F4 package will be:

  • the 170hp proven Mazda MZR 2.0 liter engine built by Elite Engines
  • adjustable twin element rear wing
  • 13×8 (front) and 13 x10 (rear) wheels
  • PFC Formula 3 quality brakes with driver adjustable brake bias
  • upgraded Cosworth electronics package including ECU, GCU and data logger
  • three way adjustable Dynamic dampers with Hyperco springs (six spring rates available)
  • upgraded uprights for oval racing
  • ride-height, camber, toe adjustment, roll center, anti-squat and anti-dive adjustments on the rear axle and ride-height, camber and toe adjustment available on the front axle.

The first container of 15 USF-17’s will loaded by Tatuss in Italy in the middle of August and teams should be receiving their brand new cars by the middle of September. The second container is scheduled to arrive in November or December and

TSO has learned that only four of the chassis in the first container of 15 cars are destined for existing Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda teams.

Exclusive Autosport is the first new team that has announced that they will joining the Mazda Road To Indy. The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan based squad is led by Michael Duncalfe, a former Star Mazda pilot and entrepreneur, and they have captured multiple Formula F/F1600 titles since 2013.

We have heard some other very intriguing team names that are set to join or re-join the Mazda Road To Indy, including a former championship winning Atlantic Championship team and a current SCCA Pro championship winning team (also former USF2000 competitors).

Some thoughts from Steve.

So how did the USF-17 perform in testing?

Lap times were official, but after some new car gremlins appeared during the first day of  testing at National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park, the lap times for a brand new car, with only a couple of days of development work were outstanding. TSO learned that the USF17 was:

  • at 2016 race-pace and within a half-second of pole at Barber Motorsports Park
  • above 2016 race pace and good enough to qualify in the top 10 at Road America
  • at race and qualifying pace at Lucas Oil Raceway

Very impressive, especially for a brand-new car that has  had no team development and and also has only half of the downforce that the current Van Diemen package currently races with.

Re: that reduced downforce. That, at least in my (Steve’s) opinion, is the best thing that could happen to entry level series of the Mazda Road To Indy.

First, it allows drivers skipping F1600 and coming straight from karting to USF2000, a chance to develop a better feel for mechanical grip. That is a skill that becomes very important as they continue to progress up the open wheel ladder.

“The car will stay much more competitive across a long run without degradation,” declared Miller. “ And, as the fuel bleeds off, the balance changes which is something these drivers will deal with all the way up the ladder – and they’ll learn it now on the first level.”

Second, it should greatly improve the racing. Due to the current high downforce levels, following closely on the high speed corners of a natural terrain circuit and oval is an issue with the current package. The lower downforce USF-17 should allow drivers to follow each other more closely, making it easier to pass and improving the racing.

“It has less aero and downforce which makes the car slide around slightly more,” explained Brabham. “I think it will be fantastic for learning car control especially on the ovals. Hopefully it will make the racing closer and tighter too without as much aero wash in traffic.

“The mechanical grip from the Tatuus chassis is also a big improvement compared to the old car. It makes up for the less downforce.

How does the future of the lowest rung of the Mazda Road To Indy look?

Bright. Very Bright.

With 24 solid orders placed by 14 different entities, and more orders expected any day, the first two 15-car containers should be filled by the time the first batch are loaded into a container for the trip from Italy to the United States in mid-August.

The majority of current USF2000 teams (owners and drivers) stuck around for the test day at Road America, and the excitement among the team principals was quite evident.

One long-time USF2000 team owner told TSO that while the current car (a 10+ year old Van Diemen design, based off of a 30 year old car) has been a good one, it was time to catch up to the rest of the world and modernize the bottom rung of the Mazda Road To Indy.

Current USF2000 rookie Dakota Dickerson was interested spectator and is very keen to help a team develop the new car and the 20 year-old Mazda backed pilot clearly understands the benefit that can have in his future career development.

“The teams all love it, said Anderson. “Some teams are thinking about adding to the orders they have already made, and we have more serious potential buyers than we have cars left in the first order of 30. I couldn’t be happier with our next generation car.”

As is always the case in racing, the running costs of a car will determine whether or not it is successful. One of the primary goals that Elkins and Andersen have kept in mind from day one was reducing the operating costs for the teams. The cost of a rolling chassis is $51,800, and Andersen has made a strong effort to keep the cost of consumables at a manageable level.

“The component usage is fantastic,” explained Andersen. “Brake wear is better by far than the current car, as is the tire wear.”

The PFC brakes that will stop the USF-17 (Photo courtesy of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, LLC Photography)

“At Barber, we did three straight sets of mock qualifying and a race and the brake pads looked nearly brand new after 600 miles,” added Miller. “As far as wear and tear and consumables, this car is much more cost effective.”

A different business model?

Another positive that you won’t hear mentioned too much, but that could potentially be huge junior series business model game changer, is that the purchase of this Tatuss chassis will be a great investment for a driver, parent, or long time sponsor. Because the basic tub will form the basis of both the USF2000 and Pro Mazda car, the $51,800 rolling chassis cost of the car can be spread out over a three or four year program. A true win-win-win situation for the parents/sponsors, teams and series.

It’s a win for the parent/sponsor because not only can the cost of the chassis be spread out over a multiple year program, the car will still have considerable value and will be easily sold.

It’s a win for the teams because they don’t have the initial capital outlay. Most junior level open wheel teams operate on such razor thin margins, not having that initial outlay could easily be the difference between continuing and not continuing.

It’s a win for the series because they have now have driver via their parents that are more invested to see out a three or four year program.

The next time the public and media will have the opportunity to see the US-17 run in anger, it will be in the hands of teams at the teams at the Chris Griffis Memorial Test. The annual off-season test will move back to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway again in 2016, and is scheduled to take place on October 8th and 9th.

Pro Mazda and USF 2000 – Road America race #2

Getting back into contention was the big story of the weekend in the Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire and Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series, the two lowest rungs on the Mazda Road To Indy (MRTI) ladder.

Aaron Telitz (Pro Mazda) and Anthony Martin (USF2000) both won their second MRTI races in the span of only five hours, and both drivers were able to re-enter the their respective title fights and the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship that goes with it.

When the checkered flag fell on the last USF2000 race at Lucas Oil Raceway one month ago, Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomore Anthony Martin trailed his teammate Parker Thompson by 26 points. While not an insurmountable lead, the pressure was certainly on Martin to continue to eat into the Red Deer, Alberta native’s point lead.

The Australian was definitely successful in that quest. His fourth win in the last five races means he leaves Road America tied  with Thompson at 217 points.

Coming to his home state Wisconsin race, Telitz was facing an almost insurmountable 55 point deficit to his 17 year-old Team Pelfrey teammate Pato O’Ward.

Whether it was his familiarity with the circuit, or the energy from his 70+ guests, Telitz was absolutely dominant this weekend by leading both practice sessions, starting on pole in both races, leading every lap and winning twice.

While Telitz was dominating, O’Ward was struggling. After seven straight first or second place finishes, the Monterey, Mexico native had his second straight fourth place finish in race #2, allowing Telitz to pull within a more manageable 28 points.

Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Road America Race #2 notes:

After running green for 19 laps in the morning race, the second Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire race was interrupted by two yellow flags. Bob Kaminsky and Jake Parsons both spun at Canada Corner causing the two yellow flags.

Telitz was never challenged and ended up winning by a dominant 10.2885 seconds, and his quickest lap of the race was over one second ahead of the next closest competitor.

Behind Telitz, the battle between Nico Jamin, Will Owen, O’Ward and Nicolas Dapero was an entertaining one. Those four drivers all finished within two seconds of each other.

Jamin was able to successfully defend the middle step of podium from O’Ward and Owen to score his 17th career Mazda Road To Indy podium. For the second race in a row, Owen was able to make a late lap pass of O’Ward to score a podium, his second in a row and the seventh of his Pro Mazda career.

For the second straight race, Anthony Martin had the car to beat, and for the majority of the second straight race it was fellow Australian Jordan Lloyd that was pressuring him. Unfortunately, the Pabst Racing sophomore had an issue and finished three laps down.

The 24 cars were able to get through the first lap cleanly with the top five after one 4.014 mile circuit were Martin, Victor Franzoni, Lloyd, Thompson and Ayla Agren.

Franzoni’s second place finish was the fifth straight podium visit for the locally based ArmsUp Motorsports veteran.

Making up the rest of the top five were former Team Pelfrey USF2000 teammates Ayla Agren and Garth Rickards. The fourth place finish the best career USF2000 finish for John Cummiskey Racing’s Agren and the fifth place is the best finish of the year for Pabst Racing’s Rickards.

AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE!

Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomore pilot Anthony Martin survived two restarts while being pressured by his sophomore Australian countrymen Jordan Lloyd and Luke Gabin to score his third USF2000 win in the last four races.

The 21 year-old winner began the race 26 points behind his fellow sophomore Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammate Parker Thompson, and with the clean sweep of the bonus points (pole, most laps led, fastest lap) he was able to score a maximum of 33 points and cut Thompson’s championship lead to only 10 points going into this afternoon’s race.

Thompson, a native of Red Deer, Alberta, ended up in fifth place, just behind Victor Franzoni, who scored his fourth consecutive top five for the Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin based ArmsUp Motorsports.

If they weren’t already awake, the 800+ campsites at Road America were treated to an alarm clock of 24 buzzing Mazda MZR engines as the first Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda races of the weekend took the green flag promptly at 8:05am.

The 24 drivers were able to get through the first five turns cleanly, but Pabst Racing teammates Garth Rickards and Yufeng Luo got together in Turn 6 to bring out a first lap yellow flag.

Before the yellow flag flew, Thompson was able to get around Franzoni for the second position in Turn 5.

The biggest first lap mover was Dakota Dickerson who broke a half-shaft in qualifying and started Racee #1 at the tail-end of the field. The 20 year-old was able to move up 10 spots to end the first lap in 13th. The pilot of the Mazda sponsored Soul Red No. 18 entered by Afterburner Autosport ended up gaining one more spot to finish the race in 12th.

The top 10 after the first lap was: Martin, Thompson, Franzoni, Lloyd, Cane, Gabin, Agren, Kohl, Lastochkin, and Das.

The track went back green on Lap 3 and second place Thompson and third place Franzoni went at it from Turn 1 through Turn 11, even going side-by-side through “The Kink.” The two drivers had issues in Canada Corner and ended the second lap in fourth (Thompson) and sixth (Franzoni).

The fighting between the top two allowed Lloyd to move into third and Gabin, who started in 10th, joined his fellow Australian countrymen in the top 3.

The top 10 at the halfway mark of the 30 minute race were: Martin, Lloyd, Gabin, Thompson, Franzoni, Nikita Lastochkin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR), Lucas Kohl (John Cummiskey Racing), Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing), Cameron Das (JAY Motorsports), and Robert Megennis (Team Pelfrey).

Martin was able to pull out to just over a one second lead over Lloyd in the first few laps after going back to green, however it appeared that the No. 21 Pabst Racing Mazda powered machine had just started come to the 21 year-old (he started the 8th las only 0.4 seconds behind Martin), when Cape Motorsports with /WTR rookie Jordan Cane spun in Turn 14.

The race was able to go back to green for a one lap shootout due to the quick work of the Holmatro Safety Team, who were able rapidly clear the wounded No. 4 of the 15 year-old off the track.

For the second straight restart, Martin got a good jump when the green flag flew, and he told TSO after the race that he was very happy to see the cars of Lloyd and Gabin side-by-side behind him.

After the race, Gabin told TSO that after the start they had to the weekend he was extremely pleased to be racing let alone on the podium. The No. 91 had a failure of a fairly new engine in the first practice session and it looked like 21-year old might have to miss the race weekend, but fellow USF2000 competitors Team Pelfrey stepped up to lease the JAY Motorsports squad an engine for the weekend.

Lloyd, who was making his first visit to Road America, credited the vast local experience of his Pabst Racing engineer Tonis Kasemets and team owner Augie Pabst, III for helping the Toowoomba, Austraila native learn the many nuances of the 14-Turn, 4.014-mile road course.

The three National Class drivers were led by local Green Bay, Wisconsin native Dale VandenBush. He was followed by Brenden Puterbach and Eric Filgueiras, who suffered a mechanical failure.

Lucas Oil Raceway – USF2000, Pro Mazda Races

USF2000 logo

Who says you need a huge field to make a competitive race?

Despite a sizable drop from 27 cars at the most recent Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda race at the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis weekend to just 12 cars for Friday night’s Mazda Freedom 75 at Lucas Oil Raceway, traffic and drama still were present during the seventh round of the season to kick off the Mazda Road to Indy doubleheader race.

Australia’s Anthony Martin out of Kalgoorlie in the No. 8 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing entry was cagier and more decisive in traffic, using slower traffic to his advantage to pass and beat teammate and polesitter Parker Thompson, in the No. 2 car, out of Red Deer, Alberta.

The decisive moment of the race came on Lap 62. Thompson was leading over Martin before the two drivers encountered Austin McCusker of Chastain Motorsports, the rookie who was running several laps down.

Thompson tried to surpass McCusker exiting Turn 2 but lost momentum on corner exit, which allowed a hole for Martin to pass him for the lead and ultimately, the win.

It was a breakthrough pass for Martin, who had come close on the low side a couple laps earlier through the corners but was unable to pass.

From pole, Thompson led Martin, Victor Franzoni, Jordan Lloyd, Robert Megennis, Yufeng Luo, Ayla Agren, Luke Gabin, McCusker, Lucas Kohl, Dakota Dickerson and Garth Rickards at the end of the first lap.

Minor movement occurred further down the order with Rickards getting Dickerson and later McCusker, with Dickerson also around McCusker by Lap 15. By Lap 20, the overall leaders had caught the Chastain driver.

For a couple laps from Laps 21 and 22, Thompson and Martin ran side-by-side with Thompson able to defend the lead. Gabin, Kohl and Dickerson also had a good battle further down the order.

At halfway on Lap 38, it was still Thompson clear of Martin by 0.6 of a second with Franzoni and Lloyd running unopposed in third and fourth and Megennis seeking to defend fifth from Luo.

While Thompson stretched the lead to north of a second he wasn’t able to fully sustain it when cycling through traffic and by Lap 50, he only had a 0.5 of a second gap to Martin.

It closed to just 0.2196 of a second on Lap 60 with Martin continuing to surge, also having saved his Cooper Tires over the course of the stint, and then came the dramatic moment.

Martin made it past on Lap 62 and led the remaining laps to the finish to secure his second win of the year by 1.3037 seconds.

It’s also Cape’s fifth consecutive win this season and first for the team at Lucas Oil Raceway since Neil Alberico in 2013. A year earlier in 2012, Spencer Pigot beat teammate Matthew Brabham, following a similar, thrilling battle for the lead.

Franzoni ended third for his third podium in a row and fourth this season, with Lloyd fourth and Luo having gotten around Megennis for sixth. Those were the only six drivers to finish on the lead lap.

After the race, Martin admitted the rarity his car was actually more comfortable on the low side of the track and that helped him when it came to making the pass for the win. He was ebullient with a smile as wide as the 0.686-mile oval.

Thompson looked more downcast having lost a sure win, but that being said, noted that a mechanical failure on an already reduced test day on Thursday limited his running and his practice. Although he and Martin are teammates and both ran for single-car teams here last year (JDC Motorsports and John Cummiskey Racing, respectively), the data points aren’t similar because both have such different driving styles. Thompson called the opportunity to lead the Freedom 100 in his Cape car at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the pace laps one of his racing career highlights.

With Franzoni having run alone most of the race, he was pleased to bag another podium. He said the team really needs to make up points at Road America if he is to have any shot of catching the Cape twins for the title.

The 75-lap race ran caution free, complete in just under half an hour.

The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires seventh round of the season, the Cooper Tires Freedom 90, was not the world’s most entertaining race but it still had a fair bit of intrigue to see whether Pato O’Ward’s incredible run of form to start the year would roll on.

Spoiler alert: It did.

The talented 17-year-old out of Monterrey, Mexico took his sixth win in seven races in the No. 80 Gap Guard/Topo Chico car for Team Pelfrey, in a flag-to-flag triumph and first win on an oval in his Pro Mazda career.

Throughout the race, O’Ward defended from Garett Grist, who advanced to second off the start of the race around Juncos Racing teammate Nicolas Dapero. With O’Ward having taken the high line on the start, he had the edge and Grist was able to power past his teammate on the opening lap.

As it turned out, Grist’s pass of Dapero for second was the only pass for position in the entire field, in the entire race. The drivers who started first, then fourth through eighth, all finished directly where they started with the short field.

Grist stayed within a few tenths of a second of O’Ward throughout the race and by Lap 75, he was only 0.2 of a second behind and closing.

But O’Ward controlled the gap and won by 0.4117 of a second.

Grist, in the No. 5 Lander Property Management/Mac Tools/Blacklist Lifestyle car and teammate Dapero, the Argentine rookie in the No. 31 Federal Seguros/American Brocker/S.O.S car, completed the podium and both had their best finishes of the season.

For Dapero, it is his first podium of his Pro Mazda career. It’s also his first top-five finish; the 18-year-old’s best prior result was seventh, twice, at both Barber races.

Jake Parsons and Aaron Telitz finished where they started in fourth and fifth. Telitz, who had been O’Ward’s closest title rival, should hold second in the championship albeit a ways back.

With Will Owen in sixth, Grist will move ahead of him for third in points. Grist entered the race two points behind him and two points ahead of Nico Jamin.

The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing twins of Jamin and Jake Eidson were non-factors and also ended where they started at the tail end of the field.

The 90-lap race took barely more than 32 minutes to complete and like the USF2000 race earlier, without a caution.

For O’Ward, he was incredibly satisfied to have – along with the Team Pelfrey team – made huge strides with its oval setup compared to last year. Having controlled the race from the start, O’Ward noted how hard it was to save tires over the 90 laps, but his added experience paid dividends. As has been the case with every weekend thus far, he’s hoping for further support to continue his outstanding start to the season. But he called his leading the field in his Pro Mazda car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of the Freedom 100 an amazing moment in his career.

Grist, admittedly, was disappointed with second. The talented Canadian has a good record here – second, first, fourth and second in four starts – but has had to struggle with finishing further behind O’Ward in most race this year. That being said, he knew how to make a move on the start and that was enough to get him into second place.

Dapero blamed his loss of position on the start to a lack of experience. But considering this was his first oval race ever and all he had as a reference point was private testing, he was overjoyed to grace his first podium in the Mazda Road to Indy. It means that all four Juncos Racing drivers have now scored at least one podium finish this season.

Pro Mazda runs next a doubleheader at Road America at the end of June.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course – USF2000 preview

USF2000 logo

Perennial USF2000 driver and team champions Cape Motorsports with /WTR began 2016 in an unfamiliar manner. After the first event of he season, the St. Petersburg based squad sat third in the team standings and none of their trio of drivers were in the top-five in the driver’s points standings.

The team-wide malaise did not last long though, as Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda sophomore Parker Thompson won both races at Barber Motorsports Park, and the trio of Thompson, Anthony Martin, and Nikita Lastochkin had an average finish across the pair of races.

The two wins combined with a forgettable event for Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing), the points leader after St. Petersburg, means that the 18 year-old Thompson comes to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with an 11 point lead over Luke Gabin (JAY Motorsports).

Somphomore Gabin, who due to budget issues is racing on a event-by-event basis, has one podium and top five finishes in all four races so far. Gabin finished fourth and fifth at this event last year as an USF2000 rookie and after an up-and-down rookie season, will hope that he can continue his run of clean, fast and consistent races to continue extending his 2016 USF2000 campaign.

Past Racing duo Lloyd and Yufeng Luo who dominated the opening round at St. Petersburg struggled to find the pace at the last event at Barber Motorsports Park and come to Indiana in third and fourth place on the championship table. The Augie Pabst III led team has had success on the 2.439 mi Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in the past, winning a race with Will Owen in 2014 and scoring a podium with Jake Eidson in 2015. The Pabst family also has a winning history on Central Indiana road courses, with Augie Pabst, Jr. piloting his Chevrolet powered Scarab Mk II to victory at the first Hoosier Grand Prix on the 2.5 mile road course at Indianapolis Raceway Park (now Lucas Oil Raceway) in Clermont, Indiana on June 25, 1961.

Reigning USF2000 rookie of the year Martin currently sits fifth in the chase for the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship. The 21 year-old from Kalgoorlie, Australia will need to improve on the third and fourth place finishes at this event in 2015 if he wants to put a dent in the 20 point lead his teammate Thompson has amassed.

In a category that is often dominated by veteran drivers the two podium finishes by 16 year-old Team Pelfrey rookie Robert Megennis have him handily leading the rookie of the year chase and place him sixth overall, only 25 points behind Thompson.

Sophomores Victor Franzoni (ArmsUp Motorsports), Nikita Lastochkin (Cape Motorsports with /WTR), Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing) and Garth Rickards (Pabst Racing) currently hold down the seventh through tenth spots in the championship and will need to have good weekends to climb back into the title hunt.

The National Class (SCCA Formula Continental spec cars), which is currently led by Spencer Motorsports Eric Filgueiras has seen an influx of entries this weekend, which considering the iconic venue, is not a huge surprise. Joining Filgueiras is: Dale VandenBush (ArmsUp Motorsports), Robert Armington (Tomasi Motorsports), Brenden Puderbach (Fat Boy Racing), and Charles Finelli (Fat Boy Racing).

Barber Motorsports Park – USF2000 Race #2 – recap and results

USF2000 logo
For the second straight race it was the quick Cape Motorsports with /WTR pair of Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin who started on the front row. In the reverse of the first race Martin began on pole and Thompson on the outside of the front row, but is once again was the Canadian Thompson who came out on top.

The 18 year-old that is sponsored by Weyburn Energy is now leading the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda points over Gabin.

Gabin, a 21 year-old driving for JAY Motorsports, scored his second straight podium and fourth straight top five to start 2016.

At the end of the first lap the top 10 were: Parker Thompson, Anthony Martin, Luke Gabin, Jordan Lloyd, Victor Franzoni, Ayla Agren, Robert Megennis, Garth Rickards, Nikita Lastochkin and Austin McCusker.

Pole-sitter Martin certainly won’t forget Lap 2 any time soon, losing second place to Gabin in Turn 1 and third place to Lloyd who made a daring move around the outside of the Aussie in Turn 5.

Further back in the field the No. 83 of James Munro broke a half-shaft and came to a halt at the side of the tracking forcing race control to throw the yellow flag.

The Holmatro Safety Team was able to quickly pull the Kiwi off the track and the field went back to green on Lap 3. Franzoni used Turn 5 to get by pole-sitter Martin to move up to fourth.

One-third of the way through the race and Thompson was a scant 0.5 seconds ahead of Gabin. Jordan Lloyd, Victor Franzoni, Anthony Martin, Robert Megennis, Nikita Lastochkin, Ayla Agren, Garth Rickards and Austin McCusker made up the remainder of the top 10.

Some action further back in the pack saw Lucas Kohl and Michai Stephens make contact. Both drivers were able to keep going but Kohl suffered a double hit. The 17 year-old was forced to pit road with a flat tire and he later had to serve a drive-thru penalty for avoidable contact.

With ten minutes to go in the 30 minute race, Lloyd, Gabin and Franzoni were battling for second, third and fourth position. The No. 9 ArmsUp Motorsports machine of Franzoni and the No. 21 Pabst Racing car of Lloyd made contact with Franzoni dropping back to 12th and Lloyd continuing but making contact in at the south end of the track bringing out the second yellow flag.

Franzoni restarted 12th and was able to gain back three spots to finish 9th.

Lloyd was able to continue after a visit to the pits and finished a lap down in 20th spot, and begins the next event in third place in the championship standings.

The field went back to green with just over five minutes remaining.

Martin who found himself back on the podium after the Lloyd and Franzoni contact, made an aggressive move on Gabin for second on on the restart, but was not able to make the move stick.

On the second last lap, Megennis was able to get past Martin in Turn 5 to grab the last spot on the podium. This is the 16 year-old New Yorker’s second podium after finishing third in his first USF2000 race in St. Petersburg.

Rounding out the top five was the third Cape Motorsports with /WTR driver Nikita Lastochkin.

That’s it for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series at Barber Motorsports Park. The drivers are back in action in two weeks in support of the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis to kick off the month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Barber Motorsports Park – USF2000 Race #1 recap and results.

USF2000 logo

After a 2015 rookie season in cars and USF2000 that saw Canadian Parker Thompson flirt with the podium on seven different occasions with fourth and fifth place finishes, the 18 year-old’s first step on the podium included a trip to the top step.

“Oh man, I can’t tell you how good it felt to get that first win, especially for the Cape Motorsports boys after a rough St. Petersburg,” beamed Thompson. “We really pulled back and came strong here in Barber with one goal in mind, to take back the championship lead.”

The Mazda MZR 2.0L engines for the Friday’s first of two weekend Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda races fired at 4:55 pm, and the green flag flew at 5pm after two pace laps.

Lucas Kohl had contact before the drop of the green flag and fell to back of the field and was forced to pit for repairs. The Roberto Moreno coached Brazilian was able to continue but finished two laps down in 21st.

At the end of the first lap, the top ten were: Thompson, Victor Franzoni, Anthony Martin, Jordan Lloyd, Luke Gabin, Ayla Agren, Nikita Lastochkin, Jordan Cane, Garth Rickards and James Munro.

The start of the race was fairly clean with the only incident occurring when Yufeng Luo hip-checked Dakota Dickerson off track at the exit of T5.

Franzoni, who scored his 6th podium at Barber Motorsports Park was able to move by Lloyd (T1) and Martin (T5) to move up to second, and was able to finish the race in that position.

The ArmsUp Motorsports deal for the 20 year-old came together quite late, but he has quickly gelled with quickly with engineer John Walko. The Sao Paulo, Brazil has also had much success at Barber in the past. Today marked his sixth podium in nine starts.

Gabin was able to use an inside move to get by current points leader Lloyd in T5 on the 2nd lap.

Michai Stephens who moved up six spots to 15th from his 21st starting spot was the biggest mover in the first five laps.

The running order after five laps were: Thompson, Franzoni, Martin, Gabin, Lloyd, Cane, Lastochkin, Agren, Rickards and Munro.

Thompson settled in and held a comfortable one second lead over Franzoni, but Munro, Robert Megennis, Autsin McCusker, TJ Fisher, and Cameron Das were having a furious battle for the final spot in the top 10.

Soon after that furious battle, Das was forced to pit for for damage to the front end of the No. 92 JAY Motorsports machine.

Ten laps into the race, Thompson was able to increase his lead over Franzoni to 2.1 seconds. The No. 9 of Franzoni was another 4.1 seconds ahead of sophomore Martin. The rest of the top 10 were: Gabin, Lloyd, Cane, Lastochkin, Agren, Rickards and Munro.

On the 10th lap, Megennis made a pass attempt on Munro, and Megennis was forced off track and lost a position to MCusker.

After a five lap battle, McCusker was able to get Munro for the final spot in the top 10 on Lap 15.

The final three laps featured a great battle between the No. 8 of Martin and the No. 91 of Gabin for the final spot on the podium.

The full results of the race were:

Barber Motorsports Park – USF2000 qualifying update –

USF2000 logo

After dominating qualifying and the two races in St. Petersburg during the first race weekend of the year, Pabst Racing sophomores Jordan Lloyd and Yufeng Luo had wildly disparate qualifying sessions. Toowoomba, Australia native Lloyd will start inside the second row while the 17 year-old Luo will have some work to do, starting inside the 10th row.

Taking the top spot were the familiar brilliant white cars of Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomores Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin at the wheel. The teammates were separated by only 0.05 seconds as the Canuck, Thompson, just pipped the Aussie, Martin.

The 30 minute qualifying session for the pair of Friday and Saturday USF2000 Grand Prix of Alabama races began under sunny skies with a swarm of 2.0L Mazda MZR powered cars taking to the 2.3-Mile, 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park Road Course.

Fresh sets of Cooper Tire slicks were the call for qualifying.

Halfway through the session the top five were: Thompson, Martin, Luke Gabin, Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing), and Jordan Lloyd.

A red flag flew for Victor Franzoni who came to a stop at the exit of “The Museum Turns” with nine minutes left in the half-hour session. The 20 year-old who has five previous Barber podiums was still able to qualify in fourth spot.

The session ended under a red flag after James Munro found the kitty litter in Turn 8 while pushing hard during the last three minutes of the session. Munro will start the race in 11th.

Luke Gabin and Cameron Das were quick in pre-event testing and practice on Thursday, so it should be no surprise that the JAY Motorsports teammates were able to qualify in fifth and twelth, respectively.

After a disappointing qualifying effort in St. Pete, Norwegian sophomore Agren improved substantially for the second race weekend of the year. The No. 33 John Cummiskey Racing machine will start the race outside of third row.

The only driver in the National class this weekend is Eric Filgueiras and he qualified 23rd.

Barber Motorsports Park – Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda preview and today’s recap

USF2000 logo

After swapping the top step and sweeping the first two spots on the podium in St. Petersburg, Pabst Racing sophomore teammates Jordan Lloyd (58) and Yufeng Luo (56) arrive at Barber Motorsports Park separated by only two points.

Lloyd was quick in Thursday’s practice/testing and should be in contention for the pointy end of the grid, however his teammate Luo struggled to find pace and will have to step his game to keep up with Lloyd.

Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammates Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin began the season as two of the favorites for the 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda title and the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship that accompanies it. Both drivers had some issues in St. Petersburg, and come to the second event of the season in a hole. Australian Martin is currently fifth in points and Canadian Thompson is seventh.

Thompson led testing/practice and has three top fives in four USF2000 races at Barber Motorsports Park. Martin, who trailed his teammate by only … in testing/practice has even better results in his four Barber races. Martin has a second, third, and two fourths across the 2015 USF2000 Winterfest and regular seasons.

After two solid finishes in St. Petersburg, Luke Gabin (JAY Motorsports) is currently third in the USF2000 standings. The 21 year-old has four previous starts in Birmingham, Alabama, and has qualified well, but struggled when it came time to race.

Gabin’s teammate Cameron Das, who only began racing in 2015, is making his series debut after skipping the first two rounds of the championship. The 17 year-old had the fifth quickest lap-time in testing and it will be interesting to see how he performs when the pressure is turned up for qualifying on Friday morning.

Gabin and Das are working with engineer Daryl Bear, who engineered RC Enerson at Team E in 2014. Enerson had three wins and one second at Barber that season, so it should be no surprise that Gabin and Das are quick out of the box.

Victor Franzoni had a surprisingly slow start in St. Petersburg, but the ArmsUp Motorsports pilot should be able to jump start his season at Barber. The 20 year-old Brazilian has five previous podiums at Barber and finished testing/practice with the third quickest time.

Team Pelfrey struggled at times to find pace with four rookies in 2015. The Florida based team stuck to their guns and begin 2016 with four rookies, and the early results are much improved. Youngsters Robert Megennis and Jordan Cane both scored podiums at the seasons first event, and both were in the top eight of practice.

After showing top five speed in “spring training”, John Cummiskey Racing sophomore Ayla Agren had a disappointing start in the season’s first event. A poor qualifying effort meant the 22 year-old began both races at the back of the grid. She was able to race her way to respectable finishes, but will need to qualify better this weekend to have a shot at top fives she is easily capable of.

What TSO is watching this weekend.

  • Pabst Racing had an impressive opening weekend in St. Petersburg, can they keep their foot on the gas at Barber?  With three sophomore drivers that have experience on the circuit, expect to see them up front.
  • St. Petersburg was all about the Pabst Racing duo of Jordan Lloyd and Yufeng Luo, but don’t sleep on the third member of the team. Garth Rickards, had the pace, but not the luck in St. Petersburg, and a rebound in Alabama is a very good posibility.
  • Cape Motorsports with /WTR has been the dominant Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda team over the last five years. They had the pace at the first event of the year, but did not have the results. It will be interesting to watch how the Dominic and Nicholas Cape team respond to being the hunter.
  • Can Team Pelfrey continue to build on their promising opening weekend. Podiums by Robert Megennis and Jordan Cane, solid results by TJ Fischer were off-set somewhat by a disappointing weekend by the very experienced James Munro. Was the New Zealander pressing a little too much to make an impression. Expect him to tone it down this weekend and bank some top results.

Testing/Practice recap:

The Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series had four scheduled sessions on the 2.3-Mile, 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park Road Course today (Thursday, April 21, 2016). Two of the session were classified as promotor test sessions and two were official practice sessions for the pair of USF2000 Grand Prix of Alabama races that will take place on Friday and Saturday.

The two test sessions were dominated by the Cape Motorsports with /WTR sophomore duo of Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin. Martin led the first session and Thompson led the second session with the young Canadian’s time topping his teammate by only one-tenth of a second.

Thompson and Martin were followed by fellow sophomores Victor Franzoni (ArmsUp Motorsports) and Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing), with series debutante Cameron Das (JAY Motorsports) rounding out the top five.

The first official practice session ran under threatening skies, but the circuit did stay dry the entire time. The top three were once again made up of the sophomore trio of Parker Thompson, Victor Franzoni and Anthony Martin. They were joined in the top five by sophomore Ayla Agren (John Cummiskey Racing), while St. Pete podium finisher Robert Megennis (Team Pelfrey) was fifth.

The second official practice, and final session before qualifying at 9:30am was run in drying conditions with only a portion of the field taking to the track. JAY Motorsports rookie Cameron Das led the way, followed by his teammate Luke Gabin, Dakota Dickerson (Afterburner Autosport), Yufeng Luo (Pabst Racing) and Jordan Lloyd (Pabst Racing). With rain forecast during qualifying, doing some laps in wet conditions, could turn out to be a smart move.

St. Pete – Saturday – USF2000 Race #2 Notes and Results

It was a two-for-two Saturday for Pabst Racing, with sophomore driver Yufeng Luo charging to his first victory in Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda action. Lacking the calamitous action in Turn 1, this race was filled with hard racing and several dramatic moments.

Jordan Lloyd again started from the pole position alongside Parker Thompson, and it was a significantly cleaner run through Turn 1. James Munro and Anthony Martin did make slight contact, though, resulting in the first full course yellow of the race. Munro would lose a lap making repairs, while Martin came in for a nose change but stayed on the lead lap. Lloyd held the lead at the front from Thompson, while Luke Gabin jumped from seventh to third. Luo fell back to fourth from third, but it was only a temporary delay to his day.

When green flag racing resumed, Lloyd built a comfortable lead as Garth Rickards moved into fifth to put all three Pabst Racing machines in the top five. With ten minutes remaining, though, another full course caution neutralized the action as Charles Finelli stalled in the runoff.

In the final green running of the day, the lead finally changed hands. Thompson got a good run on the front straight, diving down the inside of Lloyd in Turn 1. As the two battled, Luo had already passed Gabin and was upon the lead duo. Luo pounced, first picking off Lloyd and then sliding by Thompson, just making slight contact with the Canadian as he took the lead. Lloyd joined Luo in passing Thompson, as did Team Pelfrey’s Jordan Cane who had also gotten by Gabin.

Lloyd stuck with Luo, but a final yellow for Dakota Dickerson’s tire wall contact in Turn 7 ended any hopes of a weekend sweep for the Australian. Instead, it was Luo flipping the order from Race 1, giving Pabst Racing yet another 1-2 finish while Team Pelfrey put another driver on the podium. Cane’s run was particularly impressive given he started this race in tenth and failed to finish the first race after being involved in the second incident of that race.

Rickards just missed out on putting all three Pabst drivers in the top five, finish just behind Gabin in sixth, while Nikita Lastochkin, Robert Megennis, TJ Fischer, and Martin completed the top ten. In a brief side note, if you’re noticing Zach Claman De Melo in the results, he was entered this weekend in USF2000 just to give him extra seat time in advance of his Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires debut. The extra seat time he had in the first two practice sessions was invaluable to the Canadian youngster, thanks to the support of ArmsUp Motorsports who provided him with their third car in practice.

“The restart happened and I almost forget but I think Jordan and Parker went into Turn 1 side-by-side,” Luo recalled. “Because of the bad exit they got I was right on Jordan’s tail going into Turn 4. Going through, Parker just messed up on the exit of Turn 8 and then I had the inside into Turn 10 and made it work. I checked my mirrors and noticed I was pretty clear. Thankfully, Jordan didn’t get past me. I’m very happy I was able to bring Pabst the win.”

“I went a little bit too late getting on the power [on the last restart], picked up a little bit of wheelspin and just lost it going down the straight,” Lloyd lamented. “It’s racing and these things happen. I’m definitely happy bagging a bunch of points for the championship.”

That’s a wrap for the USF2000 field here at St. Petersburg, and for the second year in the row the story is all Pabst Racing. Cape Motorsports, the defending series champions, were once again quiet in the first round of weekend, but expect the most dominant team over the past five years to rebound when the series takes to the track next month at Barber Motorsports Park. There it will be up to Lloyd and Luo to defend Pabst’s early season advantage and become true championship contenders.
