F1600, F2000 & Atlantic – Formula Race Promotions Set for Banner Mid-Ohio Weekend

Formula Promotions logo

Salem, NH – The first weekend in July at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is quickly becoming a rite of passage for competitors in the F1600, F2000 and Atlantic Championship Series, which will see the midpoints of their seasons run this weekend at the Lexington, Ohio facility with a large turnout of open-wheel race cars expected in a Formula Race Promotions hosted weekend at the 13-turn road course.

The pairing of the three open-wheel racing Championships has become a destination for drivers as young as 14 making the step from karting, and has become a home for many veteran drivers looking to do battle with a strong field.

F1600

The F1600 will see rounds 10, 11 and 12 run at Mid-Ohio, with a blanket covering the top drivers in the Championship standings. Mid-Ohio could hold the key to the title, with just nine races left following the weekend.

A double-win performance at Watkins Glen in May has given Phillippe Denes the Championship lead for Team Pelfrey but by just eight points over Neil Verhagen, who took home a victory and two strong finishes in a big weekend at VIR in early June for his K-Hill Motorsports team.

Series Veteran Steve Bamford sits third in the Championship for Rice Race Prep, and will again also race in the F2000 Championship Series, where he leads the series standings.

Team Pelfrey’s Calvin Ming and K-Hill’s Peter Portante round out the top five in points, each with a single victory to their name and both driving chassis from French manufacturer Mygale. Ming took home top honors at Watkins Glen, while Portante won the season opener at Road Atlanta but has failed to repeat despite a number of solid drivers at the front of the competitive F1600 field.

Fellow Road Atlanta victor Max Mallinen form Swan Motorsports will return to Mid-Ohio, where his previous experience in F1600 two seasons ago could help the talented racer move up the grid. Mallinen won the third race of 2016 at Road Atlanta, but is hoping to rebound from a DNF suffered at VIR on Sunday afternoon.

There is also Kaylen Frederick, who made his points-paying debut at VIR for Team Pelfrey and featured in the lead group of all three race.

K-Hill’s Hans Ada has been progressing nicely as well in his rookie Formula F campaign and Andy Melvin will make his first start of the 2016 season at Mid-Ohio.

Wisconsin-native Jeffrey Bartz will make his pro debut at Mid-Ohio after competitive runs in SCCA Club Racing in prior seasons.

In addition, the Masters Class will feature Cliff Johnson, Joel Haas, Jim Oseth, Doug Voss and C. William Kephart, as well as Dan Pyanowski and Scott Rubenzer, making it a deep and competitive field.

Haas has run well all season under the Rice Race Prep banner, while Pyanowski returns after missing VIR. Voss and Rubenzer both return to F1600 competition after a brief hiatus.

F2000

A stacked entry list for the F2000 Championship Series at Mid-Ohio this weekend features a who’s who listing of some of the best F2000 talents in North America for rounds seven and eight of the 14-race 2016 season.

After a weekend-long battle at VIR that saw Steve Bamford narrowly edge John LaRue for two victories, the two are expected to be at it again at Mid-Ohio, but this time on LaRue’s home turf and a track he has dominated at in the past.

The lead grouping will be further bolstered by Tim Paul for Screaming Monkey Racing, who has run well at Mid-Ohio, in addition to brother pairing Austin and John McCusker for Dotworks Racing and Citation Engineering pilot Brandon Dixon.

Ohio locals Dave Weitzenhof and Robert Allaer are joining the field this weekend in what is quickly shaping up to be a quest for glory at Mid-Ohio.

Pittsburgh-based R-Sport has entered an expanded line up, with Bob Reid being joined by Chris Horan and Scott Gesford.

Returning F2000 veteran Aason Pettipas makes his first Series start in two years with Britain West Motorsports, while Steve Jenks returns after missing rounds five and six that were held at VIR in June.

Jenks was competitive at Road Atlanta and Watkins Glen, with a best finish of fifth in the No. 68 Van Diemen.

K-Hill Motorsports will field the No. 15 for Jenna Grillo, who like Jenks, also logged her best finish of the year at Road Atlanta, with a sixth place effort in race two.

Devin LeSuer and Connor Gawry both made their 2016 debuts at VIR, and are back with F2000 again for this weekend’s action at Mid-Ohio, as are Alex Ethier and Chris Gumprecht.

Atlantic

Over six Atlantic Championship Series races in 2016, Ryan Norman has taken five wins, and four in a row heading into Mid-Ohio. The No. 48 K-Hill Motorsports driver may seem unstoppable in his Swift 016/Mazda, but Polestar drivers David and Keith Grant are hoping to find the top step of the podium and have proven to be very competitive at Mid-Ohio in past runs

Norman’s Flipside Burger-sponsored car scored the sweep at both Watkins Glen and VIR, but a season-long battle with 2015 Atlantic Champion Keith Grant now returns to a track Grant won at in 2015 in the No. 40 Polestar Swift 016/Mazda

David Grant has switched from F2000 to Atlantic, with his second weekend of 2016 in the No. 29 Atlantic machine set to take place. Grant may have the most race-craft experience of the three at Mid-Ohio, as a weekend spent in an F1600 car saw him mixing it up with the lead pack in 2014.

Other entries for the weekend include Lewis Cooper Jr. from Polestar, Kirk Kindsfater from K-Hill, in addition to Comprent’s Richard Zober and Chris Ash.

The Atlantic Challenge division will once again come down to a slug-fest between Bob Corliss in a Comprent Swift 14/Toyota, and Bruce Hamilton, driving for K-Hill in a Swift 014/Toyota.

Mid-Ohio marks rounds seven and eight of the 14-race Atlantic Championship Series season.

Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda – Road America qualifying

USF2000 logo

The first of three Friday Mazda Road To Indy qualifying sessions began promptly at 10:15am when the 24 Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda rolled onto the 14-Turn, 4.048-mile Road America road course to determine the starting line-up for the first of two Cooper Tires USF2000 Grand Prix of Road America Powered by Mazda races.

Ten minutes into the half-hour session and the red flag flew for the first time when Green Bay, Wisconsin native and SCCA veteran beached himself in Turn 1.

The red flag only lasted six minutes due the quick work by the Holmatro Safety Team, who was able to get the No. 7 Mazda powered ArmsUp Motorsports machine back underway.

The track went back to green half-way through the session and the Cape Motorsports with /WTR foursome, who had yet to turn a hot lap, were some of the first cars to take to the track.

It didn’t take long for the “Cape’s” Anthony Martin to jump to the top of the time-sheet where he was able to hold on to the top spot with a top lap at 2:10.779, almost a half of a second ahead of his closest rival. It is 21 year-olds third pole of the season and also his third career Mazda Road To Indy pole.

Victor Franzoni, who is driving for local favorites ArmsUp Motorsports will start outside Martin. With a previous best grid spot of fourth, the second place starting position is the Sao Paulo, Brazil natives best of the season.

After starting the first seven races of the year on the front row, current championship leader Parker Thompson will be staring at the back of another car for the first time when the green flag waves for race #1 on Saturday morning.

It was Wisconsin based team Pabst Racing who took the next four spots on the grid. Jordan Lloyd will start fourth, while Garth Rickards will start a season best fifth, and Yufeng Luo will roll off inside of row four.

Jordan Cane who made the move to Cape Motorsports with /WTR for this weekends races will start outside the third row, his best starting spot of the season.

Ayla Agren, Nikita Lastochkin and Luke Gabin round out the first five rows.

The Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda drivers race twice on Saturday. Race #1 occurs bright and early at 8am and Race #2 will roll off at 1:10pm.

Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda – Road America preview and practice recap

USF2000 logo

After a month long break after three “Month of May” races in Indianapolis, the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda series is back in action with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Grand Prix of Road America Powered by Mazda double header at the 14-Turn, 4.048-mile Road America road course.

The series has conducted seven races in support of the IMSA American LeMans Series at “America’s National Park of Speed” between 2010 and 2013 with the eventual USF2000 champion wining five of those seven races.

After a slow start to the season at the opening event in St. Petersburg for perennial championship contenders Cape Motorsports with /WTR, the sophomore duo of Parker Thompson and Anthony Martin have caught fire, with Thompson, the Canadian winning three times and Martin, the Australian winning twice.

The 18 year-old Thompson currently holds a 26-point lead over Martin, his 21 year-old teammate and it would be very surprising if the twosome was not in the hunt at Road America. Cape Motorsports with /WTR is the only active USF2000 team with a win (they have three) at Road America, and the St. Petersburg, Florida based squad also has a total of seven podiums at the circuit.

Local teams and drivers:

Headquartered just 10 miles from Road America in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, ArmsUp Motorsports will be fielding four cars at their home race, including two cars for drivers from the Badger State. The two “cheese heads” are Max Hanratty, a 22 year-old USF2000 sophomore from just outside Milwaukee, and Dale VandenBush a veteran SCCA competitor from nearby Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Filling out ArmsUp’s line-up is veteran Victor Franzoni, who has raced himself into the championship conversation with four podiums in the last five races, and series debutant Devin Wojick. Wojick, from Fayetteville, NY, who finished third in the just completed Skip Barber Winter Series.

While none of the three Pabst Racing drivers have experience at Road America, the Oconomowoc, Wisconsin team certainly does. Founder Augie Pabst, Jr has extensive experience at Road America winning two SCCA US Road Racing Championship races in 1963 and 1964. Current team principal Augie Pabst, III, raced at Road America in Sports Car Club of America events and was also a winner at Road America in a Shelby Can-Am car. The team-wide success has not just been limited to team ownership. Engineer and driver coach Tonis Kasemits has one Atlantic Series win to go along with two additional podiums. The Estonian born Kasemits has also has made one IndyCar and two USF2000 starts at Road America.

Pabst Racing drivers Jordan Lloyd (3rd in the championship), Yufeng Luo (5th in the championship) and Garth Rickards (9th in the championship) will need to take advantage of all that local experience if they want to claw their way back into the championship.

It’s also the home race for series engine builder Elite Engines. Founder Steve Knapp, his son Logan Knapp and the rest of the company work out of a 16,000 square foot facility located just 30 miles south of Road America in West Bend, Wisconsin.

Other drivers TSO will be watching are:

JAY Motorsports Luke Gabin will be looking for a rebound weekend. The 21 year-old from Perth, Australia started the season with four straight top fives, but cooled off with an average finish of only 11.3 in the series three races in Indianapolis.

The top rookie in the series so far is Team Pelfrey’s Robert Megennis. The 16 year-old has two podiums and has finished outside of the top 10 on only one occasion so far this season. Team Pelfrey, who started the year as a four car squad, has been reduced to a single car effort for this weekend. TSO had a chance to ask Megennis about losing three teammates, and while he certainly understands not having four cars of data could hurt their efforts, he showed remarkable maturity by explaining that he thinks this is a great opportunity to learn how to get the most out of the car with no help.

What to watch for:

A fairly fresh sheet of paper for the 25 competitors.

While some of the teams have certainly been to Road America before, this will be the first visit for the majority of the drivers.

“With its long straightaways and variety of corners, Road America is a challenge for even experienced drivers, and with so little practice time, Ayla and Lucas (John Cummiskey Racing drivers) will be on a steep learning curve.” explained John Cummiskey Racing team owner Since the Cooper Tires USF2000 series hasn’t been here since 2012, it will be the same learning process for everyone, so a key to success will be how quickly they adapt.

Racing under pressure.

With the season hitting it’s halfway point between the two Road America races, the top-three in the USF2000 championship, while all sophomores, will start to feel the weight of a Mazda Motorsports Scholarship weighing on them.

It will be very interesting to watch how Thompson, Martin and Lloyd respond to the increased pressure for the first time.

Thursday practice

The USF2000 teams and drivers did have two half-hour practice sessions at Road America on Thursday.

The fist session was shortened by a few minutes when Luke Gabin’s No. 92 had an engine issue that put fluid on the track. ArmsUp Motorsports’ Victor Franzoni led the session, but most drivers were only able to complete a maximum of seven laps.

The second session was interrupted by a red flag when Clint McMahan’s No. 20 RJB Motorsports machine had an issue in Kettle Bottoms. This time it was Pabst Racing’s Lloyd that led the way with Martin, Franzoni, Ayla Agren and Garth Rickards rounding out the top five.

Proving that the Mazda Road To Indy paddock is truly like a family and that the sportsmanship among competitors is terrific; Team Pelfrey gave one their spare Mazda 2.0 liter engines to JAY Motorsports, who were struggling to come up with a solution for the engine issues that Luke Gabin faced in the first session.

The combined time-sheet is as follows:

RANK DRIVER QUICK LAP TOTAL LAPS

Watkins Glen, NY – Calvin Ming, Steve Bamford and Ryan Norman won Sunday F1600, F2000 and Atlantic races at Watkins Glen International, while Phillippe Denes took top honors in the third and final F1600 race of the weekend.

F1600 Morning Race

Calvin Ming won the morning F1600 race at Watkins Glen on Sunday in the No. 82 Team Pelfrey Mygale, leading the final two laps of the timed event to the checkered flag ahead of Neil Verhagen and Saturday winner Phillippe Denes in an action-packed round five of the 2016 season. Steve Bamford won the Masters Class with a fourth place finish, ahead of Max Mallinen in fifth place.

“I was just trying to keep my head down, keep my marks, and minimize my mistakes,” said Ming. “In the end it worked out. It was definitely a good battle. I would like to thank Team Pelfrey on a great car this weekend.”

With Denes leading from pole at the drop of the green, Ming moved up from the second row to slot in behind his teammate exiting turn one as the field charged up the hill at Watkins Glen.

The Team Pelfrey duo then worked together to open a gap back to Bamford and Verhagen, who ran third and fourth, respectively, in the opening laps. That lead was brought down to zero, however, when the safety car was deployed for a full-course caution for an incident involving Mike Scanlan, Dan Pyanowski and Ryan Bjerke.

With cleanup done, the green flag came back out, with Ming challenging Denes in turn one, and Bamford taking the inside line, three-wide, and powering into the lead. The shuffling continued with two laps to go, as Ming took the lead back and Verhagen closed and made his way to second for K-Hill. At the white flag, Ming led Denes with Verhagen closely following.

Ming led to the checkered for the victory, while Verhagen got back around Denes for second place.

Bamford and Mallinen, who started 11th, completed the top five. Ben Auriemma raced from 13th to sixth, while his Exclusive Autsoport teammate Will Harvey made his way from 12th to seventh. Of note, Peter Portante retired with a suspension failure.

While Bamford won the Masters Class, Joel Haas and Thomas Schwietz were second and third in the class, respectively.

F1600 Afternoon Race

From pole, Steve Bamford led all laps to win round four of the 2016 F2000 season on Sunday afternoon at Watkins Glen. Bamford led a hard-charging David Grant on the initial start, and fended off an attack on a restart to win his third race of the season and extend his points lead. Grant finished second for Polestar, while John McCusker charged to third late in the race for the final podium spot in cold weather conditions.

Grant finished second to score more points in the No. 29 Spectrum, a nice bounce back after a rough result on Saturday when his race ended with damage.

McCusker made moves late in the race and caught Grant but couldn’t get by, finishing third in the Dotworks Racing Van Diemen.

Weitzenhof, who won pole on Saturday, started second and settled for fourth, while Davy D’Addario put in his best drive to date with a strong fifth place finish in the No. 37 Van Diemen.

Saturday winner Matt McDonough ran as high as third but fell back to sixth, where he eventually finished in the No. 69 Radon Sport entry.

Tim Paul charged through the field from last to finish seventh for Screaming Monkey Racing in the No. 06 Screaming Monkey Racing Van Diemen.

Jayson Clunie, who finished second in Saturday’s rain race, was eighth, followed by Robert Wright and Bob Reid.

The race saw a full-course caution period for an incident involving Chris Gumprecht and Jenna Grillo, sidelining both drivers.

Atlantic Race

Ryan Norman, driving the No. 48 Swift 016/Mazda for K-Hill Motorsports, took the lead from the outside front row on lap one, and never looked back, taking his third victory of 2016 in Sunday’s race at Watkins Glen. Keith Grant started on pole and finished second in the No. 40 Swift 016/Mazda from Polestar while Bruce Hamilton won the Atlantic Challenge in a K-Hill fielded Swift 014/Toyota.

“It was a great start, I made the pass in the esses and almost (crashed) going through the bus stop motocross style on the curbs,” said Norman, who extends a quickly growing Atlantic points lead by sweeping rounds three and four of the 14-race season.

Polestar’s Grant finished second after another strong qualifying performance.

“Ryan put on a show jumping the curbs through the bus stop, I thought he was going to lose it,” Grant noted.

Lee Alexander put in a strong performance to finish third despite a quickly developing mis-fire ahead of Comprent Motorsports’ teammate Rich Zober in the No. 66.

Completing the top five was Kirk Kindsfater, bouncing back after a rough race on Saturday.

While Hamilton swept the weekend in Atlantic Challenge, the focus was on the race for second in Sunday’s event.

Mark Sherwood, in his RT-41/Toyota, tracked down John Burke’s Swift 014/Toyota for the position, with the two swapping second back and forth, and Bob Corliss arriving to make it a three car scrap for the position. Burke ended up off course mid-way through the race, leaving Sherwood to grab a strong second place finish in class ahead of Comprent’s Corliss.

Connor Burke and Dudley Fleck, who scored a second place trophy on Saturday, both failed to finish.

Next up, Formula Race Promotions heads to VIR the first weekend of June.

Mazda Announces Atlantic & F2000 Championship Contingency Program

mazda592dd07d339f6ec495b1ff0000570f88

WATKINS GLEN, New York. (May 13, 2016) – While the Mazda Road to Indy is busy at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Mazda Road to 24 is sharing the pavement at Watkins Glen International with several series including the Formula Race Promotions’ Atlantic Championship Series and the F2000 Championship Series. This made for ideal timing to announce a new Mazda Motorsport partnership supporting Mazda racers competing in the two SCCA Pro Racing open-wheel championships.

Mazda will be posting season championship cash awards for those Mazda-powered racers who finish in the top-five in either championship.

Quotes:

John Doonan, director of motorsports, Mazda North American Operations: “These championships represent great racing and great value for teams and drivers looking to join the Mazda Road to Indy. Having a place for the soon to be replaced USF2000 cars to race is an ideal way to grow the F2000 fields. We are investing in both series support and prizes to help grow these series where competitors have a choice of powertrains. We want that choice to be Mazda.”

Alan Guibord, co-owner of Formula Race Promotions:”We’re really excited for Mazda to be part of the Formula Race Promotions program moving forward. Mazda has demonstrated their continued support of open-wheel racing and we’re happy to be part of their efforts. It is an added bonus for our drivers in F1600, F2000 and Atlantic to be eligible for the Mazda scholarship shootout.”

Denes, McDonough and Norman Win on Saturday at WGI

Watkins Glen, NY – Phillippe Denes, Matt McDonough, Ryan Norman won in F1600, F2000 and Atlantic, respectively, on Saturday in challenging weather conditions at Watkins Glen International.

F1600

Changing conditions threw a curve ball to F1600 Formula F Championship Series competitors, with Phillippe Denes taking the win for Team Pelfrey on a quickly drying Watkins Glen International in round four of the 2016 season. K-Hill teammates Peter Portante and Neil Verhagen completed the podium, with the top three taking a chance on slick Hoosiers on a wet track, and benefiting as the sun came out, able to charge to the front.

Denes started from pole for Team Pelfrey, but opted for dry tires on a wet track. With the green flag out, he went off course in turn one and dropped back through the field, as Ben Auriemma and Max Mallinen stormed to first and second and opened a huge lead on rain tires.

As their pair of Spectrums were seemingly running away with the event, the sun came out and the track started to dry. The lap times quickly came down and those who were able to survive the first five laps on dry tires came back to the front, with Denes taking his first career victory.

“We had a big moment on the start, and then the sun came out and I was like ‘yes,'” said Denes, in the No. 81 Team Pelfrey Mygale/Honda.

Portante and Verhagen, both Road Atlanta winners, had a spirited race for second with Portante beating Verhagen to the checkered flag by a car-length.

Team Pelfrey’s Calvin Ming finished fourth, also charging back to the front on Hoosier dry tires.

Completing the top five, Auriemma soldiered on for Exclusive Autosport but was helpless on a dry track, as was Mallinen’s Swan Spectrum, which came home in sixth. Auriemma has showed the rain pace all weekend, also fastest in wet practice by 1.8 seconds.

Among the storylines, Will Harvey went from last to third in just two laps but on rain tires, and came home seventh in the end.

Points leader Steve Bamford spun on the opening lap and finished tenth, winning the Masters Class ahead of Dan Pyanowski and Mike Scanlan.

F2000

Matt McDonough won the F2000 Championship Series race in a downpour at Watkins Glen (Photo courtesy of Formula Race Promotions)

The skies opened in dramatic fashion mid-way through the F2000 Championship Series race, turning Watkins Glen International into an ice-rink and allowing 2006 F2000 Champion Matt McDonough to score victory in a lap that took over three minutes and 20 seconds in a race of survival to the checkered flag. Jayson Clunie finished second and Robert Wright slammed the inside pit wall trying to steal the win in a side-ways drag race to the line, and settled for third.

McDonough, driving the No. 69 Radon Sport entry, won the Glenn Phillips Memorial Classic, a race run in memory of the team founder of GTP Motorsports. McDonough and GTP won the first F2000 Championship in 2006. McDonough last drove in F2000 in 2013 and most recently competed in a 24-hour slot car race. It is the first win for the Radon chassis.

“I had a great start and moved up through the field,” said McDonough. “It was dicey the first few laps at the front and I was able to stay on the back of the lead pack and hang out. Then the rain came. I said on the radio I wasn’t sure about staying out, I was going to give it one more lap. The first turn was simply mayhem. I braked early, I could see cars spinning in the mist, I had no brakes.

“I did a 360 on the race track, I went into the turn one runoff and I was straight, I took the brakes off and bump-started the car. I passed four or five cars that stalled,” continued McDonough. “I drove back on the track, in the distance I saw Tim Paul hit the wall in turn 2 and figured if I made it past him I’d be in the lead. It was dry down the back straight the lap before, but by now the whole track was wet. I’m excited to win the first Glenn Phillips Memorial race. He was a big part of my racing career and I really believe he had a hand in today’s chain of events.”

The last lap will be noted in F2000 history, as the field was working a full course caution when the skies opened. With mostly all cars on dry tires, the green flag came out, and almost the entire field had an off-course excursion in the run to the checkered flag, with the race ending before its time limit to adverse track conditions.

In the lead at the restart was points leader Steve Bamford, who took the race leader earlier with an aggressive move on the outside of turn one on lap one, taking over from pole position winner Dave Weitzenhof.

Davy D’addario would finish fourth with Bamford in fifth after going off on the last lap of the race. John McCusker and Dave Weitzenhof followed, with Bob Reid, who changed to rain tires during caution in eighth and Jenna Grillo in ninth for K-Hill Motorsports.

Contenders David Grant and Tim Paul were 10th and 11th at the checkered flag,
respectively, both restarting in the top five but going off on the final circuit of Watkins Glen in heavy rain.

Atlantic

From the outside of the front row, K-Hill Motorsports driver Ryan Norman took his second win in three 2016 Atlantic Championship Series starts in a wet race at Watkins Glen International. Driving the No. 48 Swift 016/Mazda to victory lane, Norman finished first in a commanding performance ahead of Dudley Fleck, who passed Keith Grant for second place on the final lap. Bruce Hamilton won the Atlantic Challenge in his K-Hill Swift 014/Toyota.

From the drop of the green, a challenging course let the aspiring Norman show his skills as he opened up a 38-second lead in just a handful of laps to start the race, passing pole winner Grant on the opening lap.

Norman’s lead was eliminated with a full-course caution, but as the track dried, he opened up the pace again, finding water to keep the tires cool, taking the victory in the timed raced.

“We got a great start and passed for the lead going up the esses,” said Norman. “I tried to stay consistent and find water to cool the tires off. I slowed down to cool them off too. Thanks to K-Hill.”

While Grant looked set for second place points for Polestar, Fleck charged past in the late stages of the race, tracking down and passing Grant on the final lap to take second, his best Atlantic finish to date.

“Keith slowed down and we were able to pass him. I never knew if the track was fully dry, I was just trying to go a bit faster each lap,” commented Fleck.

Grant settled for third in the No. 40 Polestar entry.

“It was changing conditions the whole session,” said Grant, the 2015 Atlantic Champion. “It started to dry and the track got quicker, and then it rained again. I let up too much and Dudley got by.”

In the Atlantic Challenge Bruce Hamilton led flag-to-flag for K-Hill for the win, ahead of Comprent’s Bob Corliss, who won the previous round at Road Atlanta. In third place, Mark Sherwood took home trophy hardware in his sleek Ralt RT-41/Toyota after battling through clutch issues earlier in the weekend.

“Well it was a challenge today,” said Hamilton. “The new (track) surface is just a ball, even in the wet.”

The action from Watkins Glen continues on Sunday with two F1600 races and single races for F2000 and Atlantic.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course – Pro Mazda Preview

Pro Mazda Logo

Pato O’Ward won three of the first four Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire races of the 2016 season, but was only originally confirmed through the double headers in St. Petersburg, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama. Late last week, it was announced that the 17 year-old Pro Mazda points leader who is sponsored by Gap Guard would be competing in both events in Indianapolis, Indiana, on the road course at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the oval at Lucas Oil Raceway.

“I’m really excited for Indy,” said O’Ward, who celebrated his 17th birthday last Friday. “Last year I had a very bad weekend there, so I’m looking forward to changing that around. I have great memories of the Chris Griffis Memorial Test in 2014 and I’m super-stoked to be coming back and leading the championship. My goal is to leave the weekend leading as well, with more of a comfortable gap in points. I have been preparing a lot and really want to bring some fantastic results to myself and Team Pelfrey.”

Sophomore O’Ward, who finished sixth, 10th, and fifth in three races on the 2.439 mi Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in 2015, currently has a 12 point lead on his Team Pelfrey rookie teammate Aaron Telitz.

In four previous races on the IMS road course, the Rice Lake Weighing Systems sponsored Telitz has had impressive results with three podiums and two front-row starts.

With two third place finishes at Barber Motorsports Park, Juncos Racing’s Garett Grist moved from seventh place to third place in the quest for the Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship. Juncos Racing has collected one win, and five podiums (leading all Pro Mazda teams) in the five races the Mazda Renesis powered cars have contested on the IMS road course, so the 21 year-old Canadian should have a good opportunity to gain points on O’Ward and Telitz.

Grist’s Juncos Racing teammate Will Owen has improved with each outing in 2016. The Texas Christian University student started the year with ninth, sixth, fifth and fourth place finishes, and will also be looking to move up the points table at a track he’s had success at in the past. In five starts on the IMS road course the 21 year-old has one win, two podiums and has failed to finish outside of the top eight.

The two veteran’s rookie Juncos Racing teammates will both be looking to improve on their Barber Motorsports Park results. After two DNF’s due to contact in Alabama, Australian Jake Parsons needs a clean weekend to show that his results can match his pace. Meanwhile, Nicolas Dapero, who spent last year as a Juncos development driver, will need to continue his steady improvement if the 17 year-old wants to compete in the deep Pro Mazda field.

The Nicolas and Dominic led Cape Motorsports, lead all teams with two wins on the IMS road course, and will hope that past success on the the 2.439 mi Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course will translate into better results for Pro Mazda rookie teammates Nico Jamin and Jake Eidson.

Two victories at this event last year (combined with a poor result for Eidson), helped kick-off Jamin’s march to the Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda championship.

The field will be filled out by four National Class drivers. Series regulars Bobby Eberle, who is making the move from World Speed Motorsports to JDC Motorsports and Jay Horak (M1 Racing) will be joined by Kevin Davis (JDC Motorsports) and Bob Kaminsky (Kaminsky Racing) who both took part in this event last year.

Barber Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda Race #2 – recap and results

Pro Mazda Logo

Pato O’Ward, who has only been confirmed through this weekends event in Birmingham, Alabama, will go on the hunt for sponsors as the Pro Mazda points leader and also on a two race wining streak.

The 16 year-old led the 27 lap race flag to flag, to join USF2000’s Parker Thompson as a double winner on the 2.3-Mile, 17-Turn Barber Motorsports Park Road Course.

The Monterrey, Mexico native told TSO that at the moment the chance of him making it to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the next round of races in only 50/50 and he’s headed back home to get on the phone and try and find more sponsorship to continue.

Telitz, who now has one win and a triplet of seconds to start his rookie Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire season was unable to turn the tables on O’Ward, who made a late race pass on the Rice Lake Weighing Systems sponsored No. 80

The 24 year-old is currently second in points and was “OK” with today’s result, but was still disappointed in himself for letting O’Ward surprise him yesterday, saying that was his race.

After a disappointing start in St. Petersburg, Juncos Racing championship contender Garett Grist was able to come home third, his second straight trip to the interview room and 12th career Mazda Road To Indy podium.

Grist was happy with his speed in comparison to his teammates, but knows that he and engineer Dempsey have some work to do to make up the current deficit to the Team Pelfrey cars.

After a ten-minute delay due to an extended Verizon IndyCar Series race morning warm-up, the ten Mazda Renesis fired for the second Mazda North American Operations Presents the Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Alabama Cooper Tires race of the weekend.

By virtue of the quickest race lap in yesterday’s race, O’Ward and his Gap Guard sponsored No. 80 started on the pole beside Race #1 pole sitter and teammate Telitz.

O’Ward was able to get a jump on the field, but Telitz and Grist went cleanly side-by-side all the way from Turn 1 through Turn 7 and on the long run down to Turn 8, with the rookie Telitz coming out on front.

Behind those two, Jake Parsons and Weiron Tan, who started sixth and seventh had contact before the braking zone at Charlotte’s Web (Turn 5). The black and yellow No. 81 Team Pelfrey machine barrel-rolled before coming to rest before Turn 5.

Tan was able to get out of his broken machine under his own power. Parsons was also unable to continue and collected his second consecutive “DNF- Contact”

The track immediately went yellow and at the end of the first lap the running order was: O’Ward, Telitz, Grist, Jamin, Owen, Eidson, Dapero, Cevallos, Parsons and Tan.

The green flag came back out on the Lap 5. O’Ward again pulled a quick gap, but Grist tied a outside move on Telitz for second place in Turn 5, but was not able to get the pass completed.

Right behind that battle, Owen got a great drive out of Turn 5 and Turn 6 and make a daring pass of Soul Red Mazda backed No. 2 of reigning Pro Mazda champion Nico Jamin going into the difficult Museum complex (Turn 8 and Turn 9).

Halfway through the race and O’Ward held a 1.5 second lead over Telitz. The Team Pelfrey duo had checked out over the rest of field with Grist running a 5.2 seconds behind Telitz. Owen and Jamin made up the remainder of the top five.

The familiar black and yellow Team Pelfrey machines of O’Ward and Telitz ran

Further back in the field, Cape Motorsports with /WTR teammates and former USF2000 adversaries were lest then a second apart in the battle for fifth.

The final half of the race saw O’Ward’s lead fluctuate between 1.2 and 1.5 seconds over Telitz, as both drivers were turning laps within one-tenth of a second of each other.

Jamin was able to put some pressure on Owen for the fourth spot, finishing only … seconds behind the Juncos Racing sophomore. Jamin was also able to hold off

Telitz, who stood on the podium for the 21st time in his Mazda Road To Indy career, may not have won the race, but he did gain the one bonus point for the quickest race lap.

F1600 and F2000, Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout series, opening weekend races

As two of the “official feeder series” for the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout, and also as American based junior open wheel series, the F1600 Formula F Championship Series (F1600) and F2000 Championship Series (F2000) are two championships that TSOLadder will be following closely in 2016.

Over the past five years, the F1600 and F2000 series have provided the Mazda Road To Indy with 17 drivers that were on track in the opening weekend at St. Petersburg, including: Neil Alberico, Garett Grist, Jake Eidson, Aaron Telitz, Ayla Agren, Austin McCusker, Eric Filgueiras, Sam Chastain, Garth Rickards, Nikita Lastochkin, Max Hanratty, Jordan Cane, Robert Megennis, Brendan Puderback, Chales Finelli and Michai Stephens.

F1600 Formula F Championship Series

This past weekend (April 8-10, 2016), 17 drivers took to the 12 Turn, 2.54 Mile road course at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia  for the first three races of their 21-race championship. All three races featured a different winner, and has become the norm in F1600, each race featured a scintillating finish decided by less than 0.5 seconds.

A veteran of two Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda seasons, Peter Portante won Saturday’s first race after a multi-car final lap battle. Portante, a 20 year-old driving a Honda powered Mygale for K-Hill Motorsports started the race from pole and was able to cross the line a mere 0.128 seconds ahead of Team Pelfrey’s Honda/Mygale of Phillipe Denes, who was making his very first start in a formula car.

“These guys are nuts,” said Portante, who won on his Series debut. “The draft was insane. I tried to break away but everyone became friends to catch me.”

“We almost had it,” added Denes, “it was a close race.”

The final spot on the podium and also the top finishing Masters class driver, was held by experienced Canadian Steve Bamford (Rice Race Prep – Honda/Mygale). Rounding out the top five were 15 year-old Neil Verhagen (K-Hill Motorsports – Honda/Mygale) and Guyana native Calvin Ming (Team Pelfrey – Honda/Mygale).

Race #1 Results

Saturday’s second race had Mooresville, North Carolina native Verhagen, starting on pole on the strength of 1:29.911 lap, the quickest of Race #1 and the only sub 1:30 lap on Saturday. The youngster fell back to eighth early in the race, but was able to storm back and just nip Race #1 winner, Portante by 0.140 seconds as the checkered flag fell.

“We got a bad start,” said Verhagen, “but I need to thank K-Hill for all the work, the car was phenomenal.”

“It was pretty different than the first race,” said Portante, who had also tracked down the lead group from four-plus seconds out, and went from fifth to first at one point in the race in 13 corners. “I had to work my way forward. Once I got to the front, I wanted to be second going on the last lap. I set it up on the second to last lap but no one took the bait.”

Completing the podium and winning the Masters class for the second time in two races was Bamford, who was joined in the top five by the Team Pelfrey duo of Denes and Ming.

Race #2 Results

Sunday’s finale and third race of the weekend featured a crazy final lap ten-car shootout that finished with Swan Motorsports Max Mallinen crossing the line just ahead of Bamford, who scored his third straight podium and Masters class victory.

“It’s been an interesting weekend, and I’m happy to end it on top,” said Mallinen, who started in eighth place in his Honda powered Spectrum. “I ate the wall a bit in qualy on Saturday and had to start last in the first race. Coming into the last lap I was in second and I knew I could pull a draft on the back stretch.”

After two fifth place finishes on Saturday, Ming was able to recover from a first lap spin and fight his way through the field to record his first F1600 podium. Ming was joined in the top five by Trenton Estep (Exclusive Autosport – Honda/Spectrum) and Verhagen who missed out on his second podium of the weekend by only two-tenths of a second.

Race #3 Results

F2000 Championship Series

A total of 16 F2000 drivers took to the the 12 Turn, 2.54 mile Road Atlanta road course, and it was experience that trumped youth in the first two of 14 races that will determine the 2016 championship.

Experienced racer Steve Bamford pulled double duty, racing in all five F1600 and F2000 events. The Canadian stood on the podium three times in F1600, but did not find the top step of the podium until he stepped into his Rice Race Prep Citation F2000 machine.

Sponsored by “Me Myself & I”, Bamford started in seventh (Saturday Race #1) and sixth (Sunday Race #2) spots, but was able to race his way to 1.2 second and 0.385 second victories.

“It was enjoyable,” said Bamford, about Race #1. “I need to thank the team, we had a broken differential after qualifying. I wasn’t sure we were going to make the race. I was sitting in the car when they were putting the side pods on. We made it to grid at the three minute warning.”

In Race #1 on Saturday, Bamford was followed closely by fellow Masters class driver Brandon Dixon, who qualified on pole in a Citation but was not able to keep the lead. Rounding out the top five were: John McCusker (Dotworks Racing – RFR), David Grant (Polestar Motor Racing – Spectrum), and Dave Weitzenhof (Weitzenhof Racing – Citation).

Race #1 Results

On Sunday, in Race #2, Grant was able to improve on his fourth place finish and chase Bamford to the line, finishing only 0.385 seconds behind the winner. Standing on the bottom step of the podium for the third straight race was John McCusker. Dixon was joined in the top five by fellow Master class driver Steve Jenks (Houndspeed Racing – Van Diemen).

Race #2 Results

The Fat Boy Racing twosome of Charles Finelli (7th and 11th) and Brendan Puderbach (9th and 7th) also toke part in both F2000 races this past weekend.  The duo were also National class participants in the season opening Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda event in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Formula Promotions logo

Salem, NH – F1600, F2000 and Atlantic Series competitors are set for their 2016 Formula Race Promotions season opener at Road Atlanta this weekend, April 7-10. Returning drivers are set to battle with the latest set of rookies, with all three categories showing strength heading into the first of seven weekends.

F1600

An entirely new set of talent will run three F1600 races in the season-opening triple-header at Road Atlanta. A strong entry list is also a new entry list, with only one returning driver with wins in the F1600 Formula F Championship Series – Steve Bamford. Calvin Ming, however, will be back with Team Pelfrey and swept the winter exhibition events in Florida this past February.

Among other returning drivers are Will Harvey and Ben Auriemma, who have found their way to Exclusive Autosport and will be joined by Trenton Estep, Ryan Bjerke and Dexter Czuba.

K-Hill Motorsports, which fielded multiple winning cars in 2015, will line up Hans Ada, Peter Portante and Neil Verhagen in a trio of Mygale/Hondas, while Team Pelfrey’s Ming will be joined by Phillippe Denes.

At Raceworks, Laura Hayes will make her series debut alongside veteran Sam Lockwood, who is part of the Masters Class, with returning drivers Mike Scanlan and Douglas Voss, in addition to Joel Haas, also a newcomer to F1600 competition.

Finally, after racing in F1600 in 2014, Max Mallinen makes an expected competitive return with Swan Motorsports. Mallinen recently ran a number of SCCA Majors in 2015, the Runoffs and select F1600 events in Canada.

F1600 Formula F Championship Series entry list

F2000

The F2000 Series shares a similar story to F1600 coming into the Road Atlanta, with only two drivers on the entry list with wins in F2000 competition: David Grant and Steve Bamford, who become early Championship favorites along with John McCusker and Brandon Dixon, who return after solid 2015 seasons.

F2000 will run two races at Road Atlanta to open its seven-weekend/14-race season.

Jenna Grillio will make her first start in F2000 pro competition in the No. 15 K-Hill Motorsports entry, and Jayson Clunie will make his Series debut for Exclusive Autosport in the No. 93 Spectrum.

A number of Series veterans are returning in 2016 to compete in the Masters Classm but also challenge for the overall podium including multiple-time National Champion David Weitzenhof; former Masters Class Champion Tom Fatur; Bob Reid, in the Metrik chassis from R-Sport; Brent Gilkes in his black No. 7 Van Diemen; as well as Dan Denison, who is teaming with Grant for another season at Polestar.

Other entries include Steve Jenks, in the No. 68, in addition to Brendan Puderbach and Charles Finelli.

Two Radon chassis are listed for the weekend, with Peter Gonzalez in the No. 16 and Robert Wright in the No. 90.

F2000 Championship Series Entry list

Atlantic

The fastest class of the Road Atlanta weekend will see Keith Grant start his Atlantic Championship title-defense bid in the No. 40 Swift 016/Mazda for Polestar.

Grant was solidly in control of the 2015 Atlantic season, taking multiple wins. Some of his main competition this time will include newcomer Ryan Norman, from K-Hill Motorsports, who has put together a string of Atlantic victories in winter SCCA races and both Formula Race Promotions exhibitions held in Florida.

Other newcomers on the entry list for the double-race weekend include Lee Alexander, Kirk Kindsfater and Johnpaul Ciancimino, while series regulars Bruce Hamilton and Lewis Cooper, Jr. return for the 2016 opener.

Comprent Motorsports will return with the same three drivers from 2015, with Richard Zober lining up with Chris Ash and Bob Corliss.

The big news for the 2016 Atlantic season is a format change. The field will be split into two groups, the Atlantic Championship Series for Swift 016/Mazda and Honda entries, and the Atlantic Challenge for all other Atlantic cars. Both the Atlantic Championship Series and Atlantic Challenge will have separate overall podium ceremonies for the top three finishers, as well as a trophy for the first place Masters Class driver (ages 50 and older).

Formula Race Promotions will offer competitors a full unofficial test day on Thursday, while Friday will start official practice and Saturday and Sunday pick up with qualifying and races on each day.
