MAXSpeed Group and Andersen Promotions to Continue Partnership in 2017
Mazda Road to Indy Driver Advancement Program Tests and USF2000 Scholarship Shootout Entry to be Awarded

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (December 14, 2016) – MAXSpeed Group, the sole distributor for Rotax Karting Products in the United States and the Caribbean, and Andersen Promotions, owner and operator of all three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires, will continue their partnership into 2017. Forming an alliance in 2014 through the Driver Advancement Program, MAXSpeed drivers will once again be awarded test days in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, and one champion will be awarded an entry to the MRTI USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout.

“I can’t say enough about our partnership with Andersen Promotions and the MRTI,” explains MAXSpeed Group President Richard Boisclair. “We have seen tremendous interest and success with our program, as we give drivers a taste of the open-wheel ladder system directly from our karting series. Four of the 18 drivers in last week’s $200K Scholarship Shootout are MAXSpeed Entertainment series drivers, with Austin Garrison earning his entry as this year’s US Open Rotax Senior Champion. Oliver Askew was one of the MRTI test winners from 2014, as was Trenton Estep from 2015. Congratulations to Oliver on winning the inaugural $200K Scholarship! The opportunities are real, and I am excited to continue to give these awards to deserving, young and talented karters.”

Next year, two drivers will be awarded two-day tests during off-season testing in the new Tatuus USF-17 cars in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, which will make their official series debut in 2017 and be the series standard for at least the next five years. Additionally, a champion from a MAXSpeed promoted series will be awarded entry into the 2017 MRTI USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout. Details and criteria for both awards will be announced at a future date.

“We are excited to continue our partnership with Richard and the MAXSpeed Group,” said Michelle Kish, COO of Andersen Promotions. “This program has been a success from the start in not only introducing drivers to the next step on their careers but introducing us to the rising talent in the karting ranks. I want to again thank this year’s judges Spencer Pigot and Charlie Kimball for their time and valuable input.”

The partnership between the Mazda Road to Indy and MAXSpeed Group was announced in June 2014 to foster the next wave of up-and-coming drivers. The Rotax MAX Challenge, promoted by MAXSpeed Entertainment, is an Official Feeder Series of the Mazda Road to Indy.

TSO Ladder Notes from Steve:

  • This successful partnership, which just completed it’s third year, is a fantastic way for the Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire (MRTI) to connect with the grassroots level of racing. The win-win advancement program benefits karters and the MRTI; the program affords an opportunity for karting stars to go through a scholarship/shootout process, something that they will no doubt face at another point in their career (i.e. – the MRTI $200K Scholarship Shootout or the Team USA Scholarship program), while simultaneously exposing top-level karters to the MRTI.
  • The initial class of four 2014 winners included Oliver Askew, who will be making his USF2000 debut in 2017 after recently winning the MRTI $200K Scholarship Shootout at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
  • The 2015 class of four karters who tested at Circuit of the Americas during the 2015 Chris Griffis Memorial Test included Rinus Van Kalmthout and Sting Ray Robb. Van Kalmthout will make his MRTI debut in 2017, driving for the newly formed Benik-Carlin team in USF2000. World Speed Motorsports recently announced the Robb would be making his MRTI debut, contesting the entire 2017 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire season.
  • While neither Dev Gore or Ryan Norbert, the 2016 winners who test at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during October’s Chris Griffis Memorial Test, have announced an MRTI program, it wouldn’t be surprising to see one of the two make the step up to USF2000 in 2017.

Mid-Ohio – Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires – Race #2

Indy Lights Logo

A note first before the second of two Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio races for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series, because there was one nugget revealed after Saturday’s first race with regards to the championship.

In the official series post-race release, this bit caught our eyes:

“The championship chase has tightened considerably, with Jones now just six points clear of Urrutia and 24 points ahead of Stoneman, who upon review of the Toronto event, today was credited with an additional seven points from Race Two. Four races now remain this season, including one more tomorrow, starting at 12:25 p.m. EDT.”

We checked with Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires series officials after this release and got this clarification:

Rule 7.3.4.2a, lap credit for a non-starting car, was assessed. Here’s that rule from the 2016 Indy Lights rulebook:

A Car shall be considered the first Car out of the Race and shall be awarded the final finishing position based on the following order:

a) The Car is a non-starting Car

So here’s what this means in layman’s terms: Stoneman was initially credited with a DNS (Did Not Start) and not awarded any points.

But upon this review, he’s been awarded 14th place points, so 7 points added to his tally.

He was planning to start the race, it just goes down as first DNF (Did Not Finish) of 14th place, rather than a DNS, and that’s why the points were added.

So, that as a preamble, here’s the recap of today’s second Indy Lights race of the weekend, and forgive us if it’s a bit scatterbrained – there’s a lot going on this weekend and this was the lucky number seven of seven Mazda Road to Indy races this weekend.

Here was the grid, with Santiago Urrutia in the No. 55 Soul Red Mazda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports on pole for the second time in as many days.

Rank Car Driver Time Session
1 55 Santiago Urrutia 01:11.1604 Quals
2 4 Felix Serralles 01:11.6638 Quals
3 17 Andre Negrao 01:11.7605 Quals
4 27 Dean Stoneman 01:11.8792 Quals
5 11 Ed Jones 01:11.9110 Quals
6 51 Shelby Blackstock 01:11.9830 Quals
7 5 Zach Veach 01:12.1636 Quals
8 22 Neil Alberico 01:12.1669 Quals
9 3 Garett Grist 01:12.3723 Quals
10 13 Zachary Claman De Melo 01:12.5390 Quals
11 18 Kyle Kaiser 01:12.6419 Quals
12 28 Dalton Kellett 01:12.6727 Quals

Urrutia then launched to another solid lead over Felix Serralles, Dean Stoneman, Andre Negrao, Zach Veach and Ed Jones, with Stoneman moving up a spot and Jones losing a spot as Veach again gained two spots.

Things more or less settled into a rhythm before Lap 11, when Garett Grist, who’s had a tougher than expected weekend in the No. 3 Buy Gap Guard/Lander Property Management/Mac Tools Dallara IL-15 Mazda, went into the gravel at Turn 4.

That brought out the first full course caution of the race and things changed a bit during that yellow. Serralles, who was running second in the No. 4 Carlin entry, spun under yellow from second place at Turn 6 before the crest of the hill.

The restart from that yellow came on Lap 16 with Urrutia leading Stoneman, Negrao, Veach and Jones, who was having defend from Shelby Blackstock.

Carlin’s day went from bad to worse shortly thereafter. Contact occurred between the restarted Serralles, who’d fallen to seventh, and his teammate Jones, in the No. 11 Jebel Ali Resorts & Hotels entry, on the backstraight on the run to Turn 4.

And then by Lap 21, it all fell apart for Jones, the championship leader, at Turn 2. Jones locked up and went deep into the gravel at Turn 2, and into the tire barrier. While it looked like a possible brake, steering column or throttle issue, the team is yet to diagnose exactly what happened.

It was a heavy impact and fortunately the Dubai-based Brit was able to get out of his car, cleared from the medical center after a check up.

That being said, the points impact would be a tougher one for the erstwhile consistent driver, who’d only finished outside the top-10 once all season.

The restart came a few laps later on Lap 26, with Urrutia still leading Stoneman, Negrao, Veach and Blackstock, who’d moved into the top-five position in his No. 51 Starstruck Andretti Autosport entry following Jones’ demise.

After Lap 30 in the 38-lap race, Serralles had more contact, this time with Dalton Kellett in his No. 28 K-LINE Andretti Autosport car, at the Keyhole when battling over seventh place. Both drivers dropped down the order as a result.

Up front Urrutia continued unchallenged in a pole-to-win romp, leading all 38 laps, and beating Stoneman’s No. 27 Stellrecht Andretti car by 1.5270 seconds.

Negrao, in third, banked his second podium of the weekend and fourth of the year in the No. 17 Lucas Oil car for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

Results are below:

9 28 Dalton Kellett 38
10 4 Felix Serralles 34
11 11 Ed Jones 20
12 3 Garett Grist 10

Post-race, Urrutia noted how important track position was en route to his win – pole position helped propel him into this double win and his fourth triumph of the season.

Stoneman finished second courtesy of a strong actual start, but struggled on restarts.

Negrao was thankful to keep his podium streak rolling.

Unofficially Urrutia is at 309 points with Jones on 293, Stoneman on 284, Serralles 267, Kaiser 260 and Veach 257.

Entering the race, Jones was at 283 with Urrutia on 277, Stoneman on 259, Serralles 255, Kaiser 245 and Veach 238.

Indy Lights is off until Watkins Glen on Labor Day weekend.

With that, it wraps our TSO Ladder coverage for the weekend from Mid-Ohio – we thank you for your reads and your support.

Mid-Ohio – Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda – Race #3

USF2000 logo

An overall Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course note first before the start of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda report: Cooper Tires has taken over the primary signage at the track as of this morning, replacing Goodyear following the expiration of Goodyear’s contract with the track.

Notable visible changes are on the media center banner and the Turn 1 overpass. Cooper Tires’ headquarters is in nearby Findlay, Ohio, and this is a huge weekend for the company with a significant number of guests and associates here this weekend. Cooper Tires is an invaluable partner of the Mazda Road to Indy, having recently also stepped up to become the overall presenting sponsor of the series.

And with that, the race notes…

Anthony Martin completed both a weekend sweep for himself and the Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team following this morning’s third 30-minute race of the weekend for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series, the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, the first rung on the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder.

Cape has delivered its second straight weekend sweep at Mid-Ohio in USF2000 with one driver, Nico Jamin having done so last year.

And for good measure, Jamin promptly swept the pair of Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires races at Mid-Ohio on Saturday, so Cape went a perfect five-for-five this weekend at the 2.258-mile road course.

Martin, in the No. 8 Cape car, beat teammate Parker Thompson in the No. 2 car for the second consecutive day, and extended his points lead in the process.

In third place, and scoring his first Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda podium, was Garth Rickards out of Mechanicsburg, Penn., in the No. 22 Pabst Racing entry.

It marked Pabst’s first podium of the weekend after ArmsUp Motorsports and JAY Motorsports had been the other non-Cape teams to get on the rostrum.

Here was the starting grid:

Rank Car Driver Time Session
1 8 Anthony Martin 1:21.1827 Quals
2 2 Parker Thompson 1:21.4460 Quals
3 18 Dakota Dickerson 1:21.7708 Quals
4 22 Garth Rickards 1:21.8893 Quals
5 9 Victor Franzoni 1:21.9370 Quals
6 21 Jordan Lloyd 1:22.1744 Quals

20 12 Eric Filgueiras 1:24.6642 Race 2
21 20 Clint McMahan 1:24.6650 Race 2

Martin jumped out to an early lead over Thompson, with Rickards and Victor Franzoni getting around Dakota Dickerson on the opening lap for third and fourth. Jordan Lloyd, Nikita Lastochkin, Luke Gabin, Jordan Cane and Robert Megennis rounded out the top 10.

Lloyd passed Dickerson for fifth on Lap 2. Meanwhile Lucas Kohl ran off course at Turns 4 and 5 on the same lap, but the Brazilian rookie in the No. 34 John Cummiskey Racing car continued without damage.

Martin’s gap to Thompson was 0.5302 of a second on Lap 5, and for the remainder of the 30-minute, 22-lap race, it fluctuated between a low point of 0.2538 (Lap 12) and high point of 0.9820 (Lap 20) throughout the race.

On Lap 10 there wasn’t much change in the order – Martin still clear of Thompson, Rickards, Franzoni, Lloyd, Dickerson, Lastochkin, Cane, Gabin and Megennis.

Gabin went off a couple laps later and fell to 15th place, which cost him a top-10 position for JAY Motorsports.

While Thompson got close he was unable to get around Martin and that’s how it was to the finish, with Martin winning a closer-than-it-looked finish by 0.3101 of a second for his series-leading seventh win of the season in 14 races.

After Pabst Racing swept the season opening weekend at St. Petersburg, Cape has won 11 of the 12 races since – Martin with seven wins to Thompson’s four.

20 92 Cameron Das 22
21 12 Eric Filgueiras

Post-race, Martin noted how he didn’t expect to go from 20 points down entering the weekend to now 21 points up leaving it. The Australian’s points lead is 347 points to Thompson’s 326.  He held off Thompson, who tried to pressure him into a mistake.

Thompson was particularly frustrated given his testing pace from a pre-race test at Mid-Ohio didn’t translate to leading a single session this weekend. The talented young Canadian said they “never hit the sweet spot” this weekend, owing to the challenge of different rubber (Firestone, Cooper and Pirelli) and the changing weather conditions at the grip-sensitive race track.

Both drivers expressed their desire to win the pole position at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, because passing is difficult.

Rickards, meanwhile, called this “like a win” to finally be on a USF2000 podium, considering this is the closest thing to a home race for him. He lives roughly six hours away and given his relationship with the Bobby Rahal Automotive Group, based in Ohio, this was an important weekend for him to deliver the goods. While he hasn’t had the strongest year, he’s determined to end the year on a high note.

That concludes the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda portion of the weekend on TSO Ladder and one final Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires race later today will wrap up the full weekend coverage. We thank you for your reads and support.

Mid-Ohio – Pro Mazda Presented by Cooper Tires – Race #2

Pro Mazda Logo

The “Nico Jamin Show” at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course rolled on in the second of two Royal Purple Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio races in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, the second rung of the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder.

Driving the Soul Red No. 2 Mazda for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing, the Frenchman captured his fifth win in a row at the 2.258-mile road course, albeit not in as straightforward a rout as his win was this morning.

The 40-minute race was the last track activity of the day and followed the Pirelli World Challenge race which had just proceeded it, and the track had the interesting mix of the Pirelli rubber coupled with then some spritzes of rain that popped up during the race.

The race for all intents and purposes, though, was decided on a chaotic and perhaps crazy first lap – although it was the first chapter in a fairly entertaining race filled with a number of passes and contact.

Aaron Telitz had the pole position by way of qualifying in the No. 82 Rice Lake Weighing Systems entry for Team Pelfrey, ahead of Jamin and Will Owen in the No. 23 AMR entry for Juncos Racing. The grid is below.

Note Pato O’Ward, in fifth, took his No. 80 Topo Chico Team Pelfrey entry for an installation lap following IndyCar qualifying after an electrical issue was diagnosed in the first race, which may have hampered O’Ward’s start to his day.

Rank Car Driver Time Session
1 82 Aaron Telitz 1:18.2545 Quals
2 2 Nico Jamin 1:18.3482 Quals
3 23 Will Owen 1:18.5858 Quals
4 00 Jake Parsons 1:18.5909 Quals
5 80 Pato O’Ward 1:18.8675 Quals
6 31 Nicolas Dapero 1:18.8737 Quals
7 81 TJ Fischer 1:19.3821 Race 1
8 57 Bob Kaminsky 1:20.6877 Quals
9 13 Bobby Eberle 1:20.9510 Quals

From the start, Telitz led Jamin but only just, with Jamin and Telitz side-by-side into the Keyhole (Turn 2) before Jamin briefly emerged ahead onto the backstraight.

That lead didn’t last long with the two of them side-by-side, with Owen close and O’Ward only just behind, having got around Owen’s teammate Jake Parsons.

Owen, who seemingly would not be denied, got what Telitz later called the “run of the century” to make it a side-by-side affair with Telitz through Turns 4 and 5.

However, with Telitz later saying he got “pinballed” in the four-way fight, he lost momentum to open the door for Jamin, who then slid by at Turn 7 for the lead, himself. Jamin made it around the outside of Owen at Turn 6 which positioned him for the inside of Turn 7.

At the end of the first lap the order was jumbled with Jamin leading Owen and O’Ward, with Telitz down to fourth and Parsons down to fifth. At the back of the field, National class driver Bob Kaminsky spun on his own exiting the final turn and stopped driver’s right, but resumed after finding reverse.

Reports of light rain followed on pit lane, and the rain would later intensify to bring out a full-course caution for moisture. Before the rain, Telitz had made it around O’Ward for third, which proved a pivotal move considering those two drivers’ respective status in the championship chase.

The restart came at Lap 15 with the order just before Jamin, Owen, Telitz, O’Ward and TJ Fischer.

A somewhat crazy restart followed, with Telitz getting a monster “run of the century” of his own out of the final corner and coming to Owen’s inside down the front straight to move into second place.

But the pass didn’t last for long, with Owen able to get back by for second a lap later, on Lap 16. And shortly thereafter Owen would begin his pursuit of Jamin, although a quick run wide at Turn 4 put pause to those hopes and he was focused on securing the runner-up position.

Roughly 1.7 to 1.9 seconds covered the two drivers, although both were more than one second behind Jamin up front.

Further back, Parsons later pitted out of fifth and Fischer limped around without a front wing.

The checkered flag flew with Jamin up front for his second win of the day, and the season, by 1.8594 seconds over Owen, with Telitz in third.

O’Ward and Fischer were fourth and fifth. Team Pelfrey now has its first race of the season – in 13 races – that isn’t a first or second with at least one of its drivers. The team won the first 11 races and Telitz was second in Round 12 this morning, but today marked the first Cape/Juncos top two team performance.

After the post-race press conference, all three podium finishers rewatched portions of the race with a mix of laughter, cheers and awe, as well as shock at wondering how they all made it through the race without major contact.

Jamin called his second consecutive Mid-Ohio Mazda Road to Indy weekend sweep an “amazing feeling” but noted the start was so crazy, and if he was to have any chance of winning from second on the grid, he’d “need to go for it” in a super aggressive manner.

Owen secured his third double podium weekend of the year for Juncos (second and third at Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis weekend, and third in both Road America races) and was almost surprised at how he hung onto the car in that “run of the century.” He called Telitz’s restart “borderline” but was otherwise very happy with his day.

Telitz explained his take on the day’s proceedings, which didn’t mean to see him get aggressive before the start all but forced him into it.

“I never wanted to be super aggressive. It just happened that way,” Telitz said. “I got him on the backstraight. Then Will had the ‘run of the century’ on the outside.

“It was great… but the only thing I didn’t like about it was he ‘parked it’ in Turn 6, and that gave Nico the run.

“But I wasn’t as concerned about either of them because they’re not in the championship and have nothing to lose. Since I was P4, then I realized Pato’s ahead of me, I had to get aggressive. I did not want him to have any momentum at all going to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. But while I felt I got hit a lot, I knew it was important to not hit Pato – and I didn’t hit him! Quite a day.”

Results are below:

And so, that leaves the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires as the first of the three Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires series with only one weekend remaining – the aforementioned Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca weekend on Sept. 9-11, for a tripleheader weekend.

After this result, Telitz carries in an unofficial 14-point lead, 345 to 331, over O’Ward. O’Ward won six of the first seven races; he’s been off the podium in five of the last six. Telitz has been on the podium in all six, with four wins, a second, and a third.

Jamin is now a clear third in points in the role of spoiler heading into Mazda Raceway, a place where he swept both Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda races last year.

At 271 points scored, Jamin is too far back to mount a championship challenge even if he’s not technically mathematically eliminated. But, he does have a chance to end the year on a high note and pull off another weekend sweep at Mazda Raceway as he did this weekend at Mid-Ohio.

Owen has a lot to be proud of after his performance this weekend, and with 254 points, he’s got a good chance to usurp Jamin for third, be “best of the rest” behind the Pelfrey drivers and look to end a two-plus year winless drought dating to a USF2000 race in similar tricky half wet, half dry conditions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in 2014. Any win at Mazda Raceway would be his first in Pro Mazda.

This concludes the Pro Mazda portion of our TSO Ladder coverage this weekend from Mid-Ohio. We hope you enjoyed it, and we’ll have the weekend cappers for USF2000 and the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires tomorrow.

Mid-Ohio – Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires – Race #1

Indy Lights Logo

The Cooper Tires Indy Lights Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio first race of the weekend for the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, the top rung of the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires, had a two word and two word-only story line:

Santiago Urrutia.

The Uruguayan, who started from pole by nearly seven tenths of a second over the rest of the field, utterly controlled the 30-lap race en route to his third win of the season – all of which have come on permanent road courses.

The driver of the Soul Red No. 55 Dallara IL-15 Mazda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports also won at the second races at both Barber Motorsports Park and Road America. He also won at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last year in the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires championship.

From pole, Urrutia led but there was a change for second and third on the opening lap.

Andre Negrao, Urrutia’s teammate in the No. 17 Lucas Oil Schmidt Peterson Motorsports entry, got around the No. 4 Carlin car driven by Felix Serralles at Turn 4. Then Dean Stoneman, in the No. 27 Stellrecht backed car for Andretti Autosport, followed him through, courtesy of being outside by Turn 5, and then the inside at Turn 6 before powering past.

By the end of the first lap, Urrutia’s lead was 1.6599 seconds clear of Negrao, with Stoneman ahead of Serralles and Zach Veach of Belardi Auto Racing – the latter of whom had gained two spots in the opening lap from seventh place on the grid.

Ed Jones was sixth ahead of Zachary Claman De Melo, Kyle Kaiser, Garett Grist, Shelby Blackstock, Dalton Kellett and Neil Alberico. Blackstock started sixth but fell to 10th on the opening lap.

Veach passed Serralles for fourth a lap later.

By Lap 5 Urrutia’s gap to Negrao was 2.6599 seconds. By Lap 10, it was 4.0941 seconds.

There weren’t many other changes by the halfway point, only Serralles having got back around Veach on Lap 8 at Turn 4.

The lead was stretched to 5.8639 on Lap 20. There was an intense battle occurring between De Melo and Blackstock for seventh, but De Melo held off Blackstock for the position.

Urrutia got the lead to north of 8 seconds before it fell back to 6.4947 seconds at the finish, ahead of Negrao and Stoneman, with Serralles fourth and Veach fifth.

With Jones sixth, this unofficially brings Jones’ lead from 24 points in the championship down to six points. Jones has 283 to Urrutia’s 277, with Stoneman at 259 and Serralles at 255.

For all intents and purposes, the title hopes of Kaiser (245) and Veach (238) appear to be dashed with this result, barring a remarkable string of results that will bring the top two back to the field.

Urruita said afterwards “our strategy is to win” following a dominant performance at a track that suits him well, similar to European tracks.

Negrao fought off the Serralles attack on the opening lap, then emerged clear of the rest of the field behind his teammate. This is his third podium of the season (Road America race two, Toronto race two).

Stoneman got a really good start and then thanked Serralles for the clean battle through Turns 4 through 8.

The second Indy Lights race of the weekend slots in the 12:20 to 1:25 p.m. ET slot on Sunday, the featured race of the weekend.

Mid-Ohio – Cooper Tires USF2000 Powered by Mazda – Race #2 and Notes

USF2000 logo

The second of three races in the Allied Building Products Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio weekend for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series, the first rung on the Mazda Road to Indy Presented by Cooper Tires ladder, took place once more after the 1 p.m. hour.

Anthony Martin has taken his second successive win for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing in his No. 8 car, ahead of teammate Parker Thompson in the No. 2 car, with the battle between them taking center stage.

Here’s a quick roundup of notes from the USF2000 paddock before the second race.

So we mentioned we’d have more on the Pabst Racing/John Cummiskey Racing car swap back for this weekend after Toronto.

Indeed, TSO caught up with Pabst team principal Augie Pabst who confirmed that Jordan Lloyd’s No. 21 car was repaired from its Toronto accident and brought back to action this weekend at Mid-Ohio, which allowed Lloyd’s 2015 JCR chassis – now driven by Ayla Agren – to go back to Agren.

Pabst said given how late it is in the season it might have been harder to find a new chassis, had Lloyd’s chassis been beyond repair.

Cameron Das didn’t start the first race of the weekend for JAY Motorsports. Das, the 16-year-old rookie out of Baltimore, got caught out by Mid-Ohio’s significantly challenging Turn 1 on Friday. He bottomed out and lost control through there, and that required the Jay Green-led operation to make repairs to the rear of the car with rear end damage.

Worth noting, Das was just at Mid-Ohio a few weeks ago for the Formula 4 United States Championship powered by Honda series debut. Das told TSO it’s hard to gauge the difference in the two cars because the Van Diemen chassis in USF2000 is well developed and at the end of its lifespan, while the new Crawford chassis in F4 is at the beginning of its lifespan.

Das, who was working with IndyCar veteran Raphael Matos as his driver coach at Toronto, continues under the Brazilian’s tutelage this weekend.

On another JAY Motorsports note, Australian Luke Gabin told TSO he was pleased with his performance in Race 1, where he started sixth and made it up to third in the No. 91 car. He said he’s gotten a lot better at his restarts. Gabin entered Race 2 fifth in points, 17 behind countryman Lloyd in his No. 21 Pabst car.

TSO understands this to be the last race weekend of the season for National class competitor Eric Filgueiras, who’s won most of the races in that class this year, as he and the Spencer Racing team plan for 2017.

He’s been the only National class entry this weekend, which comes as a bit of a surprise to TSO considering the SCCA National Championship Runoffs will be at Mid-Ohio from Sept. 19-25 later this year, and these type cars run at the Runoffs.

So, USF2000 race two. Here was the starting grid:

Rank Car Driver Time Session

Contact reportedly occurred between Team Pelfrey’s Robert Megennis and JAY Motorsports’ Luke Gabin on the opening lap. Meanwhile it was also a rocky first lap for the two drivers named Jordan. Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing’s Jordan Cane and Pabst Racing’s Jordan Lloyd fell from 12th and sixth to 20th and 21st, respectively, at the end of the opening lap.

Things stabilized a bit until Lap 6, when Dakota Dickerson, who’d started third in the No. 18 Afterburner Autosport entry, ran off course and lost a couple spots in the process. It was a minor setback for the San Diego native, the Team USA Scholarship winner a year ago and this year’s Mazda scholarship driver, who drives the Soul Red No. 18 car.

His issues paled in comparison to Ayla Agren, whose return weekend to the series hasn’t gone as planned after leading opening practice. Agren stopped on course at Turn 4 with a mechanical issue and that brought out the first full-course caution of the race.

Under yellow, the order was Anthony Martin, Parker Thompson, Victor Franzoni, Garth Rickards and Dakota Dickerson in the top five.

The restart came at the conclusion of Lap 9 and the start of Lap 10 and it was the most pivotal point of the race.

Martin backed the field up on the restart and Thompson lost momentum, which opened the door for Franzoni and the rest of the field to get a bit of a run.

Franzoni briefly got around for second in a great move before Thompson got him back on the same lap – it was a great exchange of position.

But the battle for second allowed Martin to check out at the end of Lap 10, with a gap of 2.3723 seconds.

Cane, who’d fallen to 20th on the opening lap, was a huge mover by this lap on the restart – he was up to 12th in the No. 4 Cape car.

Yufeng Luo pitted on Lap 13 with the front wing missing on his No. 23 Pabst Racing entry, and that dropped him to 17th.

By Lap 18, Thompson had closed the gap to 0.8836 of a second, and the other big mover was Cane, again, up to ninth.

Thompson got a few hundredths closer the next lap but then lost pace the last couple laps, and ended 3.8692 seconds behind Martin, who secured his sixth victory of the season.

Thompson was second and Franzoni was third, the Brazilian delivering his ninth podium finish of the season.

Megennis and Dickerson rebounded to fourth and fifth respectively.

Post-race Martin noted the importance of making no mistakes, yet indicated his mistake on the restart to back the field up almost worked to his benefit as he checked out from there.

Thompson noted how emotionally difficult the season can be, given how many points he lost in race one, and said that sometimes things bite. He noted how key the repass of Franzoni was from a points standpoint.

Franzoni praised his ArmsUp team for keeping him in the frame, albeit just shy of the top step of the podium.

Unofficial results are below. Martin unofficially leads Thompson by 15 points, 315-300, after this result. Heading in the gap was nine points, 283-274.
