KIWI SLICES TO VICTORY AT INDIANA MIDGET WEEK; PICKENS TAKES ROUND 2 AT GAS CITY

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Gas City, Indiana………When Michael Pickens rounded turn four and powered off the final corner to claim victory in Wednesday night’s Indiana Midget Week round, USAC flagman Tom Hansing’s checkers were not the only set of silks waving at Gas City I-69 Speedway.
A large swath of Pickens’ fellow countrymen, fans, followers and supporters from his homeland of New Zealand were on hand, cheering and waving their country’s flag high and proud as Pickens crossed the finish line first, delivering a gift to all those who helped support him monetarily on this successful endeavor to the U.S., many of which have their name printed on the side of his Brett & Leigh Morris/Seamount Racing – Tony Elliott Foundation/King/GRD Toyota.
“It’s wicked, man,” Pickens said with a grin. “There’s 350-plus people who’ve contributed to this campaign that we’re doing. Plus, our major sponsors. We couldn’t do this without every single one of them. To get them a win is pretty special. We asked for a lot and they gave it to us. Lucky enough, we’ve been able to deliver. It’s nice for us to say ‘hey, here’s a win for your support.’ That’s pretty special.”
Pickens would start from the 11th position after missing the heat transfer, winning the B-Main then being assessed a two-row penalty for being late to grid for the start of the main event.
For the second-straight night, USAC/ARDC Midget point leader Alex Bright would lead the field to the green from his pole starting position. Bright would surge ahead for much of the first circuit before reigning USAC Midget National champion Tanner Thorson spurted ahead on the outside off of turn four to beat Bright to the line by an inch before scooting away for control in the early stages of the 30-lapper.
Shortly after clearing Bright for the second position using the inside line on the fourth lap, season-opener winner Justin Grant found trouble in turn one as he bopped and bounced his way trampoline-style multiple times before coming to a rest sideways in turn one. He would restart from the tail.
On the second attempted lap four restart, Rico Abreu began his power surge as he ducked underneath Bright for second on the bottom of turn three. Bright countered to no avail as Abreu hustled to turn one first, then set course on running down his Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian teammate and leader, Thorson.
On the seventh lap, Abreu was in striking position and used a run entering turn three on the bottom before sliding up off the fourth corner to clear Thorson for the spot and the race lead less than 10 laps in.
The top-two of Abreu and Thorson began to distance themselves from the rest of the pack just before midway as Bright was encircled in a maddening scramble for third that included Kyle Larson, Brady Bacon and Michael Pickens among others in a see-saw thunderdome-style battle in which a brief moment of sanity was near impossible to find. Larson was the first to emerge from the fray as he first zipped past Bacon for fourth on the 13th lap and by Bright two laps later for third.
Bright came right back at Larson’s jugular to momentarily reclaim the lead, but as he slipped up between turns one and two at the midway point, Larson took ownership of third with Pickens tucked immediately behind as Bright got shuffled out of the deck and into the seventh position.
The unoccupied land between the top-two of Abreu, Thorson and the third and fourth-place cars of Larson and Pickens to melt away. Shortly after Chance Morton walked away from a turn one tumble on lap 19, the race for second became a three-way scrum involving new leader Thorson with a slight edge in the middle over Abreu nosing along on the bottom and Larson making moves up top.
With ten to go, Larson continued to inch nearer to the front, but on lap 21, his wizardry came to a halt after losing control on the cushion of turns three and four, sending him sideways into a stall from which he would not escape.

That created a window of opportunity for those lurking to make their presence known down the stretch, including new fourth-place occupant Michael Pickens who made a nifty, daring move by splitting the second and third-place cars of Abreu and Brady Bacon off turn two on the restart.
Shortly thereafter, previous night’s Montpelier winner and fourth-place runner Tyler Courtney fell to the wayside on the 22nd lap to bring out the final yellow.
Thorson and Pickens stuck together on the final restart with eight to go. When Thorson’s ride slipped high off the bottom at the exit of turn four on lap 24, Pickens made his initial bid for the lead. Thorson saw it coming and reacted with a defensive line of his own coming off of four that put Pickens in the role of a lawn edger as he came near and dear to trimming the outer edges of the infield grass blades along the front straightaway.
Pickens proceeded to fall in line behind Thorson for the moment as he regrouped to make another run. Bacon briefly nosed underneath to challenge Pickens in turn two moments later with no luck. One lap later with four to go, the lead was all Pickens after Thorson left just enough space for Pickens to squeeze by underneath off of two.
From there, Pickens put this one on ice as he ran away from the field in the final handful of laps to record his third career USAC National Midget victory and his second Indiana Midget Week triumph, a 1.6 second win over Bacon, Thorson, Abreu and Spencer Bayston.
After a rough go of it early on in the evening, the new Indiana Midget Week point leader was full of discontent. The 34-year-old harnessed that energy in a positive direction as he translated the force of his frustration to his right foot
“I was pretty angry after having to start 11th,” Pickens admits. “We should’ve started at least third tonight, but we didn’t transfer through our heat and had to run the B. We were going to start seventh, but then we were late getting out for the feature, so that meant we had to start two rows further back. I was elbows up from the get-go. Our car just got better and better. I think, on the last lap, our car was probably the best. Our car was absolutely spot-on.”
When it comes to the types of racetracks and the competition involved with Indiana Midget Week, Pickens indicated there’s no comparison.
“It’s totally different,” Pickens explains. “We have flat quarter-miles back home, so the size is similar, but the shapes are totally different. The way you race these guys as hard as you have to race them is different too. You can roll around back home and push to 80 to 90 percent and get a win. Here, you’re 100% every single lap of the race. No one gives you a single inch. It takes everything you’ve got to get every little bit out of the car and we were able to do that tonight.”
“To be honest, it’s a privilege to be able to run against these guys, let alone beat them,” Pickens praises. “When we come over here, I set the bar pretty high. I tell the boys if we can run top-five every night and get a couple of wins, that would be mega. So far, we’re hitting those marks. To get the win tonight is an absolute dream come true.”
Brady Bacon stole second from fellow two-time USAC National Champion Abreu at the line with an outside pass on the final lap in his FMR Racing/Brown & Miller Racing Solutions – Black Watch Farms/Beast/Toyota.
Meanwhile, St. Helena, California’s Rico Abreu led the most laps (13), but fell back to third at the finish in his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/Abreu Vineyards – IWX/Bullet by Spike/Speedway Toyota.
Contingency award winners Wednesday night at Gas City I-69 Speedway include Kyle Larson (ProSource Fast Qualifier), Chad Boat (Simpson Race Products First Heat Winner), Shane Golobic (Competition Suspension, Inc. Second Heat Winner), Alex Bright (Chalk Stix Third Heat Winner), Holly Shelton (Indy Race Parts Fourth Heat Winner & Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher), Ronnie Gardner (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger) and Chance Morton (ProSource Hard Work Award).

COURTNEY CONNECTS ON FIRST USAC NATIONAL MIDGET WIN IN MONTPELIER INDIANA MIDGET WEEK OPENER

Tyler Courtney recorded his first career USAC National Midget points-race win Tuesday night in the Indiana Midget Week opener at Montpelier Motor Speedway.

COURTNEY CONNECTS ON FIRST USAC NATIONAL MIDGET WIN IN MONTPELIER INDIANA MIDGET WEEK OPENER

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Montpelier, Indiana………Just four nights ago, Tyler Courtney had yet to break into the win column in USAC competition for 2017.
A mere four nights later, the Indianapolis, Indiana native is two victories richer following last Friday night’s USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car score at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Nebraska, before the latest triumph – his very first USAC National Midget points-paying victory – in Tuesday’s opener for the 13th installment of Indiana Midget Week at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
The 23-year-old driver used the bottom to slip past Alex Bright for the lead on the fifth lap, then immediately fended off a slider thrown by hard-charging Brady Bacon. Courtney then mastered a late-race restart to drive away for a commanding win to become the first driver ever to earn both his first USAC National Midget and National Sprint Car wins in Indiana Midget Week and Indiana Sprint Week.
The 2016 Gas City “Sprint Week” winner began Tuesday night’s race from the fifth spot, but quickly became a challenger after moving to third on the opening lap. Meanwhile, up front, pole sitter Alex Bright held the point as Zach Daum pursued. On lap four, Daum scampered to the high side to complete the pass of race leader Bright exiting turn two, but the yellow flag fell for a spinning Tanner Carrick before the lap could be scored, thus negating Daum’s good fortune.
On the restart, the battle at the front became a three-car dance as the trio stacked up wheel-to-wheel-to-wheel with Bacon, Courtney and Bright even-Steven exiting the second turn. One lap later, Courtney skimmed the bottom lane to take ownership of the lead between turns one and two.
“With how many good guys we had up front like Michael (Pickens) and (Kyle) Larson, I knew we had to go to the bottom at the beginning,” Courtney recalls. “I knew those guys were able to stay with me up top, so once I got past them, I knew I was going to have to get back to the top. I did that and, luckily, it started cleaning off and getting dark, so I knew I needed to stay up there because it was going to take rubber pretty soon. I feel like I had my own line in (turns) three and four by going in high and coming across the bottom. That worked for me in the heat race and I stuck with it in the feature.”
Following the same trail as Courtney was Bacon, who slid across the bottom of turn three to the top of four in front of Bright for second. He then immediately pointed his arrow squarely in the direction of race leader Courtney. Brady took a run at Courtney, serving up a slider exiting turn two on the sixth lap. Bacon came up short, and lost a tad of momentum, allowing Courtney to break away.
“In conditions like that, you just have to stay in it and hope he knows well enough not to just keep going and take both he and you out, especially when both of us are racing for a championship.  Brady’s a smart racer, obviously. There was a little bit of worry, but you just have to make sure you pull your belts tight and keep going after it. The race is just 30 laps and you have to get going when you have guys like that behind you and you know they’re coming after you. You must play defense with these guys because they’ll be playing offense when you’re in the lead.”
With 20 laps remaining, Courtney’s burst saw him expand his lead to a full-straightaway as he attacked lapped traffic with authority until a yellow with three to go slowed his pace for the stopped car of Tyler Thomas. By rule, the lapped cars between first and second moved to the tail of the field at that point, erasing the substantial gap that Courtney had constructed.
When the green dropped, a mad scramble ensued for the runner-up spot as Michael Pickens, Bacon, Bright and defending Montpelier winner Kyle Larson all wagered for the runner-up spot. All that did was allow Courtney to pull away unchallenged and unscathed on the final circuits to land his first USAC Midget points win in his Clauson-Marshall Racing/Driven 2 Save Lives – Indiana Donor Network/Spike/Stanton SR-11 over Pickens, Larson, Bacon and Bright.
“I knew it was going to be tough when they took those lapped cars out. That’s the rule and, I know when I’m running second, I’m excited when they take the lapped cars out because it gives you a fresh chance at the leader. Luckily, we were good enough tonight to where we didn’t have to battle anybody there at the end. It made my job a little bit easier.”

It’s not easy to win these races and you have to take advantage of them every chance you get. You can never that them for granted.
That’s what we love about racing and competition. – Tyler Courtney

The win snapped Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports’ seemingly unrelenting grasp on the Indiana Midget Week series in which his drivers had won seven feature events in a row dating to 2015 coming into Tuesday night’s event. The name Clauson has its fingerprints on the bookends surrounding KKM’s IMW winning streak. Bryan Clauson raced to victory in the last event prior to the KKM’s lengthy succession of wins, while Tuesday’s was captured by a car fielded by Bryan’s father, Tim Clauson.
The Clauson-Marshall Racing team has already proven themselves to be a formidable foe to challenge Kunz/Curb-Agajanian’s reign of supremacy in its first full-year of existence, with Justin Grant also nabbing a win in the season opener at the Southern Illinois Center in Du Quoin.
“I think we’re definitely on our way,” Courtney believes. “With that said, Keith has one heck of a lineup. They’ve definitely proven what they’ve got. Our goal this year was to come in and make them get up on their heels. I feel like we’ve got them a little bit against the ropes right now, but I know they’re going to dig deep and they’re going to come back at us just like we’re going at them right now. It’s going to be fun. It’s not easy to win these races and you have to take advantage of them every chance you get. You can never take them for granted. That’s what we love about racing and competition. I have a ton of respect for Pete and Keith and all those guys over there. They’ve got a hell of a group over there racing against us. It’s going to be tough, but this is why we race. This is why we do what we do.”
Auckland, New Zealand’s Michael Pickens returned to the Indiana Midget Week tour for the first time since 2014, taking second-place honors in his Brett & Leigh Morris/Seamount Racing – Tony Elliott Foundation/King/GRD Toyota.
Kyle Larson used a rare day off between Monster Energy NASCAR Cup duties to play in the dirt where he made a late-race charge to run third in his Keith Kunz-Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/Walker Filtration – TRD/Bullet by Spike/Speedway Toyota.
Contingency award winners Tuesday night at Montpelier Motor Speedway include Kyle Larson (ProSource Fast Qualifier), Shane Golobic (Simpson Race Products First Heat Winner & KSE Racing Products Hard Charger), Tanner Thorson (Competition Suspension, Inc. Second Heat Winner), Tanner Carrick (Chalk Stix Third Heat Winner), Spencer Bayston (Indy Race Parts Fourth Heat Winner), Davey Ray (Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher) and Jerry Coons, Jr. (ProSource Hard Work Award).

Four-time USAC Western States Midget champion Ronnie Gardner has partnered with team owner Jerome Rodela to compete in this year’s Indiana Midget Week beginning Tuesday, June 6 at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Gardner called central Indiana home for several years of his childhood, but the Corona, California resident has quickly become one of the premier drivers on the west coast where he’s claimed four-straight USAC Western States Midget titles and collected 21 career victories, placing him fourth all-time on the series win list.
Gardner has accomplished all those particular feats aboard the Six8 Motorsports No. 68. But when he arrives Tuesday at his Montpelier, Indiana destination following a cross-country road trip from Cali, Gardner will strap into a car he’s normally competing against – the Jerome Rodela-owned #25x.
But when Rodela, the 2005 and 2006 USAC Western States Midget champion driver, called Gardner to drive his car, it was an offer that came by surprise. Yet, it was an offer that Gardner couldn’t refuse.
“Jerome was looking for a driver,” Gardner recalls. “I race with him out west, so he gets to see me run quite a bit. I’m not sure why I got the call, but I’m honored he chose me. He’s got really nice equipment and I hope we can jell quickly and have some good runs this week.”
Gardner will teammate with Rodela’s season-long pilot, 2016 Western States Midget Rookie of the Year, Courtney Crone, who will sport the No. 25.
For Crone, it will be her first USAC racing experience in Indiana. For Gardner, though, this will be his third Indiana Midget Week trip. He’s made five career IMW feature events in 2014 and 2015 for Six8 and A.J. Felker, but has only managed to record a best finish of 12th at Lawrenceburg in 2015.
Now that he’s gotten a little more seat time on the Indiana soil, the 29-year-old Gardner feels ready to meet the challenge of six-straight nights of racing on six different tracks.
“I’m so excited to be back in Indiana with a little bit of experience at these tracks,” Gardner said. “It’s my third time out here and I believe I’m more prepared than I’ve ever been.”
After Tuesday night’s show concludes, Indiana Midget Week picks up Wednesday, June 7, at Gas City, Thursday, June 8, at Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway, Friday, June 9, on the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. The penultimate round heads to the high banks of Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday night, June 10. The series’ finale hits one of USAC’s most regularly-visited tracks in Kokomo Speedway on Sunday night, June 11.
All six nights of Indiana Midget Week will feature sprint car racing as an addition to each night’s festivities.
Wednesday’s round at Gas City and Sunday’s event at Kokomo will be streamed LIVE on http://www.SpeedShiftTV.com/. You can catch flag-to-flag coverage of each and every Indiana Midget Week event, plus much, much more, a day following the event, on-demand at http://www.Loudpedal.TV/!

PICKENS PACKS KIWI PRIDE & SUPPORT FOR INDIANA MIDGET WEEK

Seven-time New Zealand Midget Champion Michael Pickens from Auckland begins USAC’s Indiana Midget Week tonight at Montpelier Motor Speedway.

PICKENS PACKS KIWI PRIDE & SUPPORT
FOR INDIANA MIDGET WEEK
By: Richie Murray – USAC Media
Some teams travel up and down the highway, going from race-to-race with massive haulers akin to a race shop on wheels. Some opt for a more modest approach with enough room to fit their car, a few spares and tires to get by for the night. Then, there are a handful of teams who go barebones with a dually and an open trailer.
None of the above are viable options when your race team is based in the Southern Hemisphere and your plan is to bring much of your equipment to the United States!
Such is the case with Auckland, New Zealand’s seven-time NZ Midget champion Michael Pickens and the Seamount Racing crew who, after a weekend of racing in Australia, made a mad rush at the last-minute to organize their necessities to go racing in the States.
After stretch-wrapping their car and tool chests, the team’s operation was loaded onto a cargo plane where it made the long-distance journey to the USA for a daunting stretch that includes 11 races in 12 nights.
It takes a village to pull off a major undertaking such as this, and the 34-year-old Pickens has an entire throng of supporters who played a large role in making it happen. Much of the entire right side of the car is adorned with the names of hundreds of individuals who donated their money to the team to make this trip possible.
This business trip isn’t all about himself, however. It’s quite clear that Pickens brings with him a deep pride of his homeland. Underneath the names, in big, bold lettering is “New Zealand.” In addition, the New Zealand script is emblazoned over the gold leaf No. 1 on the nose and the tail tank. The miniature New Zealand flag fastened to the back of the roll cage adds a finishing touch to the true Kiwi machine.
Pickens is one of the few foreign-born drivers in American dirt track racing, period. Even more, he’s one of the few to truly make a name for himself in the USA over the years. Despite spending much of his career competing a quarter of the world away from the USA, he’s become a fixture on the Indiana dirt tracks and in USAC for well over a decade.
In fact, it was Indiana Midget Week where Pickens cemented his status as more than just a novelty in the States. He became a proven winner by beating the best the USA had to offer. Among those immediately following him to the finish line that night in 2011 at Kokomo were USAC National champions Tracy Hines, Brad Kuhn, Bryan Clauson and Chris Windom. Not to mention, he passed current NASCAR star Kyle Larson with two to go to win the deal.
Despite his status in the USA, he hasn’t crossed the sea to compete on Indiana dirt since 2014 when he secured a full-time deal to run the USAC Midget National Championship tour for car owner Don Fike.
Straight off the plane in 2017, Pickens wasted no time getting down to business. He won POWRi’s Illinois Speed Week title by virtue of a pair of wins at The Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet and at Macon Speedway. After a one-day break, the team is ready to tackle six consecutive nights of Indiana Midget Week, beginning with tonight’s opener at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
The Indiana Midget Week schedule consists of tracks ranging from a quarter-mile to three-eighths in length, with varying degrees of banking from mid to steep. Pickens has become accustomed to the Hoosier bullrings over the years, but admits there’s still a learning curve to face each time he’s here.
“We don’t have anything like the American tracks back in New Zealand,” Pickens explains. “All our tracks are flat quarter-miles, so you’re never pounding the fence back home, which is something that always takes a bit of getting used to.”
The racing season has now ended and the coldest months have descended on New Zealand, leaving Pickens with just one option to continue his midget racing season – load his gear up, buy an airline ticket and head for the warmer climate of the USA where racing is plentiful during the summer months. That’s one of the great, unique things about Midget/Speedcar racing in that it is a worldwide sport. The changing of the seasons allows a handful of the top stars in the discipline from the USA, New Zealand and Australia to travel to the other’s home turf during their respective off-seasons. The respect and comradery amongst the drivers from different cultures is very telling. A viewpoint that Pickens shares.
“Most of the guys up here (in the USA) are professional and that reflects in the way they race,” Pickens praises. “Back home, you don’t have the same competition because they only race 15-20 shows a year.”
Pickens will nearly match that in his short time here in the USA as he begins a six-race, six-night stretch at Indiana Midget Week. Following Tuesday’s Montpelier round, Pickens and the USAC Midget National Championship head to Gas City I-69 Speedway on Wednesday, June 7, Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway on Thursday, June 8, Bloomington Speedway on Friday, June 9, Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday, June 10 and Kokomo Speedway on Sunday, June 11.

KYLE LARSON & RICO ABREU RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS
FOR USAC INDIANA MIDGET WEEK
Fan-favorites Kyle Larson and Rico Abreu will join the Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports team for this year’s edition of USAC “Indiana Midget Week.”

Both drivers will be aboard the Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports-prepared machines for the six-race series that begins Tuesday night, June 6, at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Larson of Elk Grove, California will compete in the first two IMW events at Montpelier and the following night, Wednesday, June 7, at Gas City I-69 Speedway. The NASCAR star, who currently stands second in Cup points, has won at both venues during his USAC National Midget racing career, including a Gas City triumph in 2013.
Just last year, Larson raced to victory in the series’ first appearance at Montpelier where he outdueled teammate Tanner Thorson in the final laps to score the win. The 24-year-old wheelman has collected 14 career USAC National Midget victories, including his most recent appearance at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway’s “Turkey Night Grand Prix” in November of 2016.
St. Helena, California’s Abreu is one of the most decorated and popular USAC Midget drivers of this era. Race fans will be able to witness him in action on all six nights of Indiana Midget Week. Abreu, the 2014 USAC National Midget champ, has won IMW events in each of the past three years.
Last June at Kokomo Speedway, the 25-year-old stormed to the front, passing Chad Boat with nine laps remaining to capture one of his 15 career USAC National Midget victories on his way to third in the final standings. Abreu was the Indiana Midget week champion in both 2014 and 2015. He has made a single USAC National Midget appearance in 2017 at April’s “Kokomo Grand Prix,” charging from 22nd to a 4th place feature finish after flipping on his qualifying run.
Larson and Abreu will join teammates Tanner Thorson (2016 USAC National Midget champion), Spencer Bayston, Holly Shelton, Ryan Robinson and Tanner Carrick on the seven-car Kunz/Curb-Agajanian stable for the opener at Montpelier. The team has yet to win in the series this season, but this is the same team that has won the past seven IMW races, including a five-race sweep in 2016 with five different drivers (Larson, Bayston, Thorson, Christopher Bell and Abreu).
Following Tuesday’s Montpelier round, Indiana Midget Week picks up Wednesday, June 7, at Gas City. Thursday, June 8, takes you to Putnamville’s Lincoln Park Speedway while Friday, June 9, brings the red clay of Bloomington Speedway. The penultimate round heads to the high banks of Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday night, June 10. The series’ finale hits one of USAC’s most regularly-visited tracks in Kokomo Speedway on Sunday night, June 11.

HOOSIER HUNDRED POSTPONED; HULMAN CLASSIC RESCHEDULED!

HOOSIER HUNDRED POSTPONED;
HULMAN CLASSIC RESCHEDULED!

Thursday night’s “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds has been postponed due to heavy rain.

Track Enterprises and USAC officials waited for the track to come around after continuous precipitation during the early morning hours saturated the Indy Mile racing surface. But the surface was unable to withstand the showers, giving officials no choice but to put a halt to tonight’s racing activities.

Track Enterprises and USAC are currently discussing a makeup date for the 63rd running of the “Hoosier Hundred” featuring the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series presented by TRAXXAS. Stay tuned to http://www.usacracing.com/ and its social media networks for further announcements.

The “Week of Indy” continues Friday night, May 26, at Lucas Oil Raceway with the Silver Crown Series’ “Carb Night Classic.” The 100-lap event will be the first of two appearances by the Silver Crown cars at LOR in 2017.

Spectator gates for Friday night’s “Carb Night Classic” at Lucas Oil Raceway open at 2:45pm, hot laps at 4pm, ProSource Qualifying at 5:30, with racing set to begin at 6:30pm.

Additionally, the postponed “Tony Hulman Classic” USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car event has been rescheduled for Friday, June 23 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.

USAC records are on the line this week as Robert Ballou (left), Kody Swanson (middle) and Tanner Swanson (right) intend to continue their impressive streaks.

**Ballou could become the first driver to win the “Tony Hulman Classic” 3 years in a row Wednesday night at the Terre Haute Action Track.

**K. Swanson could join Al Unser as the second driver to win the “Hoosier Hundred” 4 consecutive years Thursday night at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

**T. Swanson could pass Mike Bliss as the winningest Silver Crown driver ever at Lucas Oil Raceway with another victory Friday night at the Brownsburg, Indiana paved oval.

#42 Terry Babb is the latest to enter his name into the field for this Thursday’s “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.

The 63rd running of the legendary race in Indianapolis on May 25 featuring the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series presented by TRAXXAS now anticipates a field of 40 entrants for the event, which would mark the first time 40-plus drivers were entered for a Hoosier Hundred, or a Silver Crown race in general, since 2005. What makes the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series so fascinating is its diversity. The 11-race schedule alternates throughout the season at venues ranging from dirt tracks located on the nation’s state fairgrounds with classic covered grandstands to paved surfaces that offer luxury suites and skyboxes.

On the track, a Silver Crown series title requires a driver to be readily adaptable to changing conditions and environments during a single 100-lap race, let alone a full season. READ MORE
#63 Kody Swanson
Much is and has been written about racing drivers and their exploits over the last century plus. However, journalists and historians alike sometimes overlook the other tangibles that help winning drivers get into victory lane. In horse racing it is the mount that gets the lion’s share of the publicity and sometimes the jockey, no matter how successful takes second stage. In auto racing the driver gets the biggest share of the attention while the mount that takes him to victory lane sometimes takes a backseat. READ MORE

The Tar Heel state may be known for stock car racing, but open wheel racers from North Carolina aren’t the most common sight at an open wheel event, let along the Hoosier 100. But it looks like a North Carolina native, Johnny Petrozelle from Denton, North Carolina, will be traveling to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the USAC Silver Crown annual Hoosier 100 on May 25. Kody Swanson takes the checkered flag
in the 2016 Hoosier Hundred.

When Kody Swanson lines up on the grid for this year’s 63rd running of the “Hoosier Hundred” at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, a record once thought untouchable will be just within his grasp.

In September of 1973, Al Unser and the Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing team captured its fourth consecutive victory in the annual race at the Indy Mile – the only occasion of a driver winning four straight events at one of the three traditional dirt miles the USAC Silver Crown Champ Cars annually compete on.

On Thursday night, May 25, Swanson and the DePalma Motorsports team have an opportunity to join that exclusive club exemplified by brilliant dominance, especially in this modern era in which the equipment and speed throughout the field are so equal. In fact, Kody has accomplished the three-peat feat in the very same car during his wins in 2014, 2015 and 2016. READ MORE

When the May 25 Hoosier Hundred rolls around at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, a number of questions will be filtering through the minds of race fans at the historic venue. Can Kody Swanson win his fourth consecutive Hoosier Hundred? Like Jackie Howerton in 1974, can one of several rookies pull off a major upset? Can defending Silver Crown champion Chris Windom win his fifth consecutive Silver Crown dirt track race and derail the Swanson steamroller? READ MORE

TONY HULMAN CLASSIC POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN

The first of three nights of racing for USAC’s “The Week of Indy” has been postponed due to steady rainfall in Western Indiana. Wednesday’s 47th Annual “Tony Hulman Classic” was set to bring in 30+ USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Cars. The event will be rescheduled.
Two dates are being considered and officials are checking to confirm which one will be best. The new date will likely be released at the Hoosier Hundred on Thursday.
The “Week of Indy” will now get underway on Thursday, May 25 with the Hoosier Hundred featuring the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series presented by TRAXXAS at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, which has a much improved forecast.
With the postponement of the “Hulman Classic,” fans, teams, and drivers will start making the trek an hour east for Thursday’s Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, IN. The event will feature the 63rd edition of the famed race. The event is rich in tradition and this year’s field is expected to be in upwards of 40 cars for the 100-lap event.
The weather forecast for Thursday has shown great improvement with any chances for rain ending in the early morning hours. The track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds holds up well with wet weather as proved last year when a two-hour downpour came through at noon on raceday.
USAC Silver Crown hot laps will be first on track at 5:00 with their qualifying session around 6:15. The Mid-American Stock Car Series will run their feature shortly after 7:00 and the USAC Silver Crown Series Hoosier Hundred will take the green around 8:00 PM.
Also still on schedule for this week is the “Carb Night Classic” on Friday, May 26th at Lucas Oil Raceway in Brownsburg, Indiana. On track will be the USAC Silver Crown Series for a 100-lap event. A solid field of cars is expected. Silver Crown hot laps begin at 4:00 and qualifying is set for 5:30. The Mid-American Stock car feature is slated for 6:30 and the Carb Night Classic for the Champ Cars will go green at 8:00 PM.
Fans who have purchased a “Week of Indy” Superticket will be able to use it on the remaining two events this week, as well as the Tony Hulman Classic makeup date. If you have any additional questions, call 217-764-3200.

Patrick’s Final Chili Bowl Report – Finally!

By Patrick Stephan of TrackSideOnline.com presented by Honda Racing/HPD

Well, another Chili Bowl is in the books, and while I couldn’t be here for the entire week-long festival of midget racing, I did thoroughly enjoy the last two days.

First, I have to thank Rich and Kathy from R&K Motorsports for all of their hospitality. It’s nice to just drop in for a couple days, and almost instantly feel like part of their racing family. Also a big thanks to Chris Sheil for putting up with all of my questions while doing a great job wheeling the #12 car. Chris will again be racing that car in the 2017 RMMRA championship while also planning to run some pavement supermodified races at Colorado National Speedway.

Random thoughts:  The Team INDYCAR promotion was a great idea and one that will get copied by others for next year – I can pretty much promise that J  It’s beautiful in its simplicity, cost effectiveness and the good old “fun” factor.

For probably half what it would cost to buy someone a ride and fully brand a top flight midget (thinking a Keith Kuhns prepped car – $6k-$12k I hear), IndyCar got represented by 10 drivers from across the country with diverse racing backgrounds – good move by the IndyCar PR and marketing departments and Doug Boles over at IMS (his name came up a lot when talking to Team INDYCAR drivers).

I also like this type of promotion because it spreads the money around. There were 10 driver’s that got some benefit from this promotion, that’s a good thing.

——

So, how did the driver’s we were watching run:

We’ll start with a couple driver’s that were NOT part of Team INDYCAR, but who we were watching:

Kevin Olson – KO started 4th in I Feature #1 and won the race to transfer. He got caught up in someone else’s mess during H-Feature #1 – ending his day in 8th position. Note: I purchased Kevin’s book and found in flipping through, found a couple great stories pretty quickly, including one he’d told me personally several times. That story involved KO spinning his friend (and IRL founder) Tony George out of a transfer spot and then blaming Tony for “coming down on me.”  The long version is in the book – and quite funny. BTW, I’m told KO showed up at the Chili Bowl this year with a long trench coat lined on the inside with watches and gold chains he was trying to sell.  Once I get a chance to read the book, I’ll report back, but if half the stories he’s told before are in there – it’ll be a pretty interesting read.  He’s seen (and done) a lot!

Chris Sheil – driving the TSO sponsored #12, started and finished in 7th position in E#2. He told us the car just wasn’t rotating very well around the bottom and that he was having to really get it up on the berm to make it turn. That led to him also not getting off the corners as well as he would have liked.  The race went caution free also. And it was interesting that the track at this point (and in E#1) had developed two distinct lines. No one was running the middle – it was low or high and the high side had gotten pushed way out to the wall.  Each line seemed pretty equal so there wasn’t a lot of passing in those races. Chris bicycled the car a couple times early and had to repass the cars that got by because of that. The team was generally happy with the week, but before they had even packed up, Chris and his car owner were already thinking of what they needed to do to the car to get just that little bit better here next year.

—–

Track conditions:  The track at the Chili Bowl is the “raciest” when the cushion is more “middle” track. But, track conditions are part of the game here and that’s why just making the A-Main is so tough and such an accomplishment. A lot of variables to fight through and a bit of luck is needed some times. As noted, what we saw in the F and E-Features wasn’t great for passing, but a few people were still moving forward.  Generally the track held up well, and it was certainly a “fair” track from what I could tell.

—–

This week’s hard charger went to Thomas Meseraull. He started on the pole of D#1 and won that race. He then finished 3rd out of 20 cars in C#1. In B#1, he started 17th and finished 5th to make the A-Main where he had a DNF for 23rd. That would be 24 positions gained – and doing that from the D is pretty impressive. Last year Sheil passed 26 cars in the M, L, and K features to win the award named in honor of the late Rich Vogler.

Ok, here are the Team INDYCAR drivers and how they finished (starting in order of when they ran their first race on Saturday):

Davey Hamilton, Jr. – Started 6th in J#2 and finished there. He told me after the race that he knew he needed to move up, but he just couldn’t find a spot where he was comfortable to make that move to the outside. He told me he learned a bunch this week and after his first races in a dirt midget, he’s looking forward to running some more later this year. DJ is also working on racing in numerous other series, including Indy Lights – where he really wants to have a ride in 2017.  That seems to be his true goal.

Tyler Seavey – started 9th in G#2 and finished 12th. Seavey was running in a team car to Kyle O’Gara for Sarah Fisher Racing’s Development team.

Kyle O’Gara – Started 4th in F#2 and his day was quickly over. He wound up finishing in 16th with a DNF. Andy O’Gara told me that when Kyle hit the throttle the car just didn’t go due to a fuel pick up problem picking the exact worst time (the start of a race) to develop. Tough day for Kyle. The O’Gara’s told me that they have a lot of fun at this race and are considering bringing even more cars in 2018.  Sarah Fisher was here with the team but with the restaurant, karting center and other businesses, she was just too busy to race herself this year. She came out on Friday to join with the team.  Andy told me that rumors of them getting back in to the IndyCar business may be a bit premature. They do WANT to do that again at some point, but 2017 won’t be the year. He kind of joked that the 2018 Indy 500 might be the goal.

Davey Ray – Started 9th in D#1 – and an apology to Davey, I never got a chance to chat with him this weekend, and that’s too bad –great guy when we talked last year.  Davey got caught up in a crash and wound up with a DNF to end his Chili Bowl.

Chad Boat – Started 7th in C#1, and was able to get to the 5th spot to make the transfer to B#1. It wasn’t easy though, as this was a pretty rough race. At one point he had a car up on his left side in the fight for the transfer spot. That bent the headers on his car so that it was pointed up, but he was able to finish the race. One of my friends saw the car post race and said it was a miracle the headers were still attached. Notably if you lose your muffler here – you immediately are sent off the track. In most prelim races there is no work area, so you’re just done. As it got closer to the A-Main there was a work area, but they didn’t wait for anyone. So a flat had to be changed VERY fast or you were done. A couple guys got lucky and the next restart had another crash, allowing them just enough time to get back on track.

In his B-Main, Boat was eventually able to must a 9th place finish but they were only taking the top 6, so his Chili Bowl was over. All in all, and good week for him. I talked to both Billy and Chad Boat and they confirmed a high level of interest in running some Indy Lights races this year. Chad really wants to race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and has a lot of big track pavement experience (NASCAR Trucks and Nationwide). Like most teams, Billy told me they are working on the financial aspects of running Lights now and have the long term goal of Chad running in the Indy 500. I know they are talking to a lot of people in the INDYCAR and MRTI world so we will be keeping our eyes out for more information.

David Gravel – Started 8th in C#2 and quickly got up to about the 5th spot. Unfortunately he then got shuffled down to I think about 13th or so when things got crazy. The during the second half of the 15 lap C-main, he started to make his comeback. A yellow with three or four laps remaining set up what was to be one of the best moves of the night. Gravel restarted around the 10th spot and then with 3 to go, dove under a trio of cars that were racing hard for the transfer spot – taking it four himself – all in one corner.  He was able to hang on to the 6th position for the few remaining corners, securing a transfer to B#2.

In that wild race, Gravel was eventually able to finish in the 9th spot – after starting 20th.

Jerry Coons, Jr. – Started 9th in B#1, and by lap 3 was already in the top-6. He kept moving forward and on lap 5 was in 3rd. He lost that spot briefly, but around halfway was up to 2nd in the yellow plagued race.  When the checkered flag fell, he was still second, and safely transferred to the A-main.

In the final race of the night, Coons was still fast and raced his way from 15th to 8th. Coons, Jr. picked up an extra $500 from INDYCAR for making the A-Feature as part of the Team INDYCAR program.

Donny Schatz – Started 10th in B#1, and ran a pretty solid and clean race and was up to 7th around the fifth lap. He had 6th a couple times it appeared but also got dropped to 8th at one point.  When the checkered flag fell on the 20 lap race, he got just beaten to the line my Michael Faccinto who took the final transfer spot. Schatz did pick on the 2017 Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year award (yep, he was a Chili Bowl “rookie”). He’s won the Knoxville Nationals 9 times in a winged sprint car and the World of Outlaws title 8-times.  And he also just got back from racing a sprint car in Australia – perhaps that’s why he hasn’t had the time to run the Chili Bowl before. To come within a few feet of making the A-main in your first try is still a nice week for anyone.

Dave Darland – Started 9th in B#2, and I’m sure some other interesting stuff was happening in this race, but I got fixed on Darland and his battle with the legendary Sammy Swindell. There were a couple if incidents. The first came a handful of laps in to the race, when Darland dove under Swindell and slid up in front of him. They got together and Swindell wound up on his side in Turn 2 – much to the delight of many fans in attendance who cheered Sammy’s crash.  If you are not familiar with short track racing, Swindell’s nickname is “slammin” and while fairly quiet outside the car, he’s never been shy about moving someone that is in his way. For that, he’s probably offended the fans of many other driver’s over the years, and he’s certainly the “black hat” cowboy in this old western movie of an event.

Swindell’s car was able to re-fire once they got the car turned back over, and he rejoined at the rear of the field.

At this point, Darland was running 8th and by the time the next yellow came on lap 12, he was still in that spot. He would move up to battle Alex Bright for the transfer spot and they too would have lots of contact.

With three laps remaining, Darland was in the final transfer spot, with Swindell 3 spots back but charging.  Just after Darland took the white flag, the duo entered Turn 1 together – and neither of them made it to Turn 2. Darland entered the corner in the middle, and Swindell put his car in that same spot. Sammy’s right front climbed over the left side of Darland’s car and they both spun to a stop a few feet later.

Clearly, this was not a pro-Swindell crowd, so many in the stands (and pits) were not happy with that move. After the green white checkered restart, Darland would be credited with a 13th place finish, and the two looked to “rub” a bit more on the cool down lap.

Swindell stayed in his car as it was pushed back to his pit area, and then exited to the boos of many observers.  A crowd of a couple hundred swarmed the Swindell pit area. The only “action” occurred when a member of Darland’s crew came over and expressed his displeasure, which of course riled up a couple of Swindell’s guys, but that was fairly quickly sorted out.

I went over a couple minutes later and found Dave Darland standing in his pit area, talking to his crew. He came over and we chatted for a couple minutes. Darland told TSO, “its racing! Just a couple of fast race car driver’s going for a Chili Bowl transfer spot.”

He calmly walked me through both major incidents with Swindell. Of the final one that took them both out of contention, Darland initially said, “he ran me over,” then later corrected that to “he got in to me.” The latter of course a less egregious level of infraction in the racing world.

Darland summed it up with, “It would have been nice make the race in the last transfer spot, but that’s racing.”

Dave then opened up the beer he’d been holding and I walked away from that conversation enormously impressed by Darland’s grace and class. For certain, he’s seen a lot in his hall of fame career, so while this was a big day, it was also just another day at the office.

Tyler Courtney – started on the inside of row two in the A-Feature and held that spot for a while. Unfortunately, some faster cars were able to get around him as the race ran on, and he had to settle for 6th when the checkered flag fell. The A was one of the few races I didn’t get to watch from the Turn 4 viewing platform as that had become overcrowded. Instead I watched the race on a TV in the pit area – not exactly the best way to track anyone except the leader. Courtney was the top finisher among the Team INDYCAR drivers, picking up an extra $500 from INDYCAR, in addition to the $500 he got for making the A-Main (and in addition to the initial sponsorship money).

That brings me to one of the more interesting aspect about the Chili Bowl – its expense! And how little most people seem to worry about that. This is despite teams having to be there all week – running up hotel, rental car, and other bills. As noted before, they get nearly 400 entries and can barely accommodate all the fans and racers, despite being in the cavernous Tulsa Expo Center. In fact, they have very strict rules on who even gets to pit inside. Some teams combine entries to get extra space, multiple cars out of one trailer (and the actual trucks and tractors are left outside).  If your trailer is more than 24 feet, you MUST bring more than one car, or they won’t even let you bring that trailer in – you’ll find friends to combine with, or they’ll help you do that.  TSO knew a couple teams that had to leave their trailers outside and pit out of someone else hauler – it’s just a fact that with this many entries – everyone has to work together to make it work.

For those reasons, they don’t exactly “need” to pay a bigger purse to draw entries, and while a $10k to win race was at one time a big deal in short track racing, it is not what really brings in the teams or fans for this event. Several teams (on both ends of the racing economics spectrum) told me they wouldn’t want to see it become a $50k to win or $100k to win type of show. Those are now fairly common especially in the sprint and late model categories (where several of the big name driver’s running the Chili Bowl really make their livings).

Certainly, many teams would like to see more money paid farther down the alphabet, or cheaper pit passes for actual crew members (as opposed to fans – like me – that simply buy pit passes because the grandstands have long been sold out).  Money that might help cover costs – yes, they’d appreciate that, but no one wants to see the overall formula changed a whole lot.

For example, there aren’t a bunch of provisionals to guarantee the big names are in the big show. There is one past champion spot – and Rico Abreu had to use it this year. That spot goes to the most recent champion not already qualified for the A-main. But, for example, since Rico took that spot, Sammy Swindell had to watch the feature.

The smaller teams appreciate this “level” field. They aren’t being forced out of the A for a “name” driver. They also appreciate the cold hearted way this race is officiated. No waiting for ANYONE. And you stop – you go to the tail – in every race, all week long.

It’s brutal and often not fair for drivers that had to stop for a crash that blocked the track – but this prevents arguments about the officiating. You can complain about the “bad luck”, but not about someone’s judgement calls.  The only time you’ll see anything close to that is when the flag man waves off a restart or something.

And finally the reason no one is pushing for any major changes is because what they are doing now is working pretty well. It’s a fun event, that fans and competitors alike enjoy, and until it stops being “fun” any changes should be along the lines of just making things more “comfortable.”

That said, recent improvements in the ventilation system here have made things better inside, though you will still breathe a lot of dust and a bit of fumes. The latter part is MUCH better than when I was here in the mid-2000’s for sure. I remember having to open the big doors at times just to make the air breathable – that doesn’t seem to be the case now.  They get the air quality pretty good most of the time. They also require you to use ONLY their fuel, can’t even have any of your own in the trailer – that’ll get you kicked out.

Bottom line on this subject is the Chili Bowl is one of those events that needs to be on your “bucket list,” to see at least once. And I recommend not just coming for Saturday. Gotta hit at least one prelim night to truly appreciate things, and also because those are great nights for talking to the competitors that run on different days. They are pretty relaxed and happy to chat, while do some car prep and mostly just hanging out.

Another random thought: I’m amazed at the sheer number of dirt midget cars that are run at this race and also those available for sale. This is truly one of the best ways to go racing right now. Solid cars can be had for reasonable amounts (in racing dollars). In addition to all the officially entered cars, there were several others here as back-ups, and most of them had for sale signs on them.  $15k would buy many of the cars here, and you’d have a fairly decent race car – and certainly good enough to get started. Once the driver and team catch up to the cars performance a jump to a $12k to $15k engine would be enough to win in many sanctioning bodies.

Yes, there are also teams here with $50,000 engines (the full factory TRD effort that won the race for example) but for this race, on this track, you don’t need one of those to be competitive and to have a lot of fun racing. And you’d be fine with that same entry level car at many events across the country.

Now, I’ll be honest, and not to disparage some folks hard work, but there are a few cars that are just well past their useful life cycles. But, those folks bring those cars here every year to have some fun. That said, the days of bringing one of those and hoping to advance out of ANY Saturday main (even the O) – are over. There are just too many good drivers and good cars. And nearly every feature has a couple good cars that had bad luck in qualifying, so they are going to be on the move. It did seem to me that the number of “outdated” cars is on the decline here. Again, too easy to get “decent” stuff right now so no need to keep bringing the old ones.

——-

My final thoughts – things that were NOT good this year. Not a lot to complain about and really, this is an event that you need take in as it is – not try to make it something it’s not – but some things can always be improved.

This year they made a couple changes that were negative. The number one complaint being some VERY long breaks on Saturday night after the D, C’s, and B. One of those intermissions even included some very bad “professional wrestling.” I’m sure some portion of the long intermissions was due to the TV schedule, but one of the beauties of the Chili Bowl is how fast they move along the action – with nearly constant racing most of the time. These extra breaks really put a damper on this.

Plus, with running “O” features this year, they decided NOT to have any hot laps – except for cars in the A-main. The absence of those hot lap sessions didn’t seem to cause much debate until we wound up with too much down time later in the night.

Another final thought is that for 2018, TSO is going to try and cover this event “completely.” It’s tough for me to get off for an entire week in January for both job and “kid” reasons, but I am going to see what we can pull off. This event deserves more attention from the world and is part of our long term plan to utilize TSOLadder.com to cover more and more aspects of the open wheel racing world.

And with that – I’ll call our Chili Bowl wrap-up complete. Thanks for everyone’s patience.  My next event is the big open test at Phoenix International Raceway for the Verizon IndyCar Series.
