MRTI “Soul Red Finale” at Watkins Glen International – Saturday – my travel notes and today’s schedule

By Steve Wittich

Good morning from a chilly Watkins Glen International – my car had a number three as the beginning number of the temperature – where the first Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire champion of the 2107 season will be crowned this afternoon.

We’ll get into the MRTI coverage with our next update, but wanted to update you with my travel adventures.

My journey, like it always does, started in Carmel, Ind., and similar to all but two of my trips, it involved windshield time, instead of a flight. I will miss only three IndyCar events this year – Long Beach, Phoenix, and Texas – and the only events I have flown to are St. Petersburg, and to the finale at Sonoma Raceway. That means I’ve driven to: Barber, Indy (duh), Detroit, Road America, Toronto, Mid-Ohio, Pocono, Gateway, and Watkins Glen.

My normal travel partner is my wife’s trusty Honda Fit, aka Roxy, who has now travelled to at least 60 races in the last five years. Roxy was fully prepared to be put into service one last time for the trip to “The Glen,” but our good friends at Mazda made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

My Soul Red travel partner (Photo – Steve Wittich)

My road trip partner this weekend is a brand new Soul Red Mazda CX-5. The color is fitting since this weekend is the Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire’s “Soul Red Finale.” I’ll have a full review of the mid-size crossover at a later date, but I’m awfully impressed with the sporty ride so far.

On Wednesday afternoon/evening I drove to Erie, Pa, before completing the drive to Watkins Glen International on Thursday morning. I’m staying west of the track in Bath, N.Y., which equates to a scenic 35-minute drive through the Finger Lakes region to get to the 11-Turn, 3.4 mile road course.

On Thursday night, a colleague and I made the pilgrimage to Seneca Lodge for a pint of beer in the historic Tavern Room, and dinner in dining room. Traditionally, the food at Seneca Lodge isn’t great, and isn’t bad, and that was the same this year.  But, you don’t go to Seneca Lodge for the food, you go to soak in the history of all the legendary racing names that have celebrated at the 69 year old watering hole, and that we did.

The Tavern Room at Seneca Lodge is a must visit for any racing fan. (Photo – Steve Wittich)

On Friday night, I joined with three other friends at Jerlando’s Ristorante and Pizza Company on Franklin Street in the heart of the village of Watkins Glen. If you are in the mood for massive servings of traditional Italian dishes, this is the place to visit. It’s also the place to be if you want to see some racing celebrities. Four-time winner at “The Glen,” Scott Dixon sat a few table away from us, and many other table were filled with familiar names from the paddock.

I had the Veal Parmigiana, which was melt in your mouth good. I also hear that the Pasta Carbonara is out of this world.

All right, USF2000 qualifying begins in 10 minutes. We’ll be back with those results in half-an-hour.

Victor Franzoni, who came into the “Soul Red Finale” weekend at Watkins Glen International with a two point lead over Anthony Martin, ends the first day of the weekend with a three point lead, after winning his fourth pole of the season.

And, he made a major statement in doing it.

The Brazilian’s quickest lap of 102.438 seconds was more than eight-tenths of a second ahead of his championship compadre Anthony Martin, who will start on the outside of the front row.

Team Pelfrey rookie duo Carlos Cunha and TJ Fischer will start behind the championship contending duo.

At the half-way point of the 20 minute session Franzoni was the provisional pole sitter with a quick lap at 103.723 seconds. He was followed by Cunha and Martin.

Not long after the 10 minute mark, Martin took over the top spot on the time sheet with a lap of 103.250 seconds.

Martin’s tenure on provisional pole was short lived as Franzoni went back to point with a scorching lap at 102.710 seconds. He would later improve on that to solidify his pole.

Victor Franzoni, who took the lead in the chase for the $790,000 Mazda Motorsports Advancement Scholarship that will be awarded to the Pro Mazda champion, led the first and only practice session before qualifying this afternoon.

Franzoni’s quickest lap was timed at 103.813 seconds, and was just over a half-of-a-second quicker than fellow Brazilian Carlos Cunha.

Australian Anthony Martin, who trails Franzoni by only 2 points heading into the weekend ended the session 1.3 seconds behind Franzoni.

Team Pelfrey teammates TJ Fischer, and Nikita Lastochkin, who are fighting Cunha for the third spot in the championship, ended up with the fourth and fifth quickest time.

The entire 30 minute session saw the 13 entries turn a total 181 laps.

“Soul Red Finale” at Watkins Glen International – Pro Mazda preview

By Steve Wittich

Talk about pressure. Only two points separate Victor Franzoni and Oliver Askew heading into the Pro Mazda Watkins Glen Grand Prix Presented by Cooper Tires double header at Watkins Glen International this weekend. On the line? Only a $790,000 Mazda Motorsports Scholarship that will allow the winner move up to Indy Lights, the last step of the MRTI ladder.

The two drivers, who each have five wins on the season, have traded the points lead on five different occasions, including last Saturday’s 55 lap oval race at Gateway Motorsports Park, that saw Franzoni make a daring outside pass in Turn 1 and Turn 2 to take the lead and consequently move two points into the championship lead.

“I’m really excited for the final races,” said Franzoni, who drives for Juncos Racing, and will turn 22 years-old on Tuesday. “This has been the best year of my career and I’m driving better, for sure. I think I grew up a lot this season. For the final, that’s two more races that I have to do my job, do my best and try to win both. It won’t be easy, but I’m ready. Juncos Racing is ready, so it’ll be fun and the most important moment of my life.”

Martin, who is the reigning USF2000 champion, can join Matthew Brabham (USF2000 and Pro Mazda) and Spencer Pigot (Pro Mazda and Indy Lights) as back-to-back winners of MRTI scholarships.

“Last year’s title fight has helped me this year,” said Martin. “Just knowing what is needed at the end of the season when it’s crunch time. You really have to work harder than ever with your team to get the most out of your car and yourself. It is super important because every point is crucial and can determine whether you win the championship.”

Some other stats and facts related to tight title tilt between Franzoni and Martin:

  • The two drivers are tied with five wins apiece.
  • Franzoni leads Martin in podiums by a margin of 10 to 9.
  • Both drivers have 10 top fives, and 10 top 10s each.
  • Martin has six poles compared to three for Franzoni
  • Martin has slim advantage in bonus points, leading over Franzoni by a margin of 16 to 12.
  • Franzoni has 205 points on road courses, which tops Martin by 12.
  • Martin has led 157 laps compared to 98 for Franzoni
  • Martin and Franzoni are the only two Pro Mazda drivers to complete every lap so far this season.
  • Martin leads Franzoni in average starting position – 1.7 to 3.1
  • Franzoni leads Martin in average finishing position – 1.5 to 1.7

The Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire series is making only it’s second appearance at Watkins Glen International. The series ran a single race with the Rolex Sports Car Series (Grand-Am ) in 2008. That race was won by Charles Hall, who was driving for current series promoter Dan Andersen.

The Team Pelfrey trio of TJ Fischer, Carlos Cunha, and Nikita Lastochkin, are currently only separated by a total of 20 points for third place. Fisher has the lead, but is only holding on to third by five points over Cunha.

Gateway Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda qualifying notes and results

By Steve Wittich

For the sixth time in 2017, and 15th time in his MRTI career, Anthony Martin collected the single bonus point for winning the pole, and extending his points lead over rival Victor Franzoni to five points. But it certainly wasn’t easy.

“No! No! No!,” explained the Australian when asked if his two lap qualifying effort was easy. “It was on the edge. On the second lap going into (Turn) 1, I was going in really fast. I was trying to get close to going flat out, but I wasn’t quite (flat out). But, boy was was I trying. I didn’t want to make any huge mistakes, but the car was definitely on the limit.”

In our preview for the St. Louis Pro Mazda Oval Challenge Presented by Cooper Tires we mentioned the importance of bonus points, especially with the quest for the $790,300 Mazda Motorsports only separated by four points heading into the weekend.

Martin, a Cape Motorsports rookie, was the only driver to average over 140.001mph, and over the course of the two lap run covered the 2.5 miles a quarter of a second quicker than Brazilian Franzoni.  Martin credited a recent test at Gateway Motorsports Park and a fantastic car from his team.

We learned a lot in the test a few weeks ago,” explained the 22 year-old Australian. “We did a qualifying simulation during the test, so we knew and expected what it was going to be like because the temperature is pretty much the same as it was today. I think we went a little bit faster then we did at the test day. With the IndyCar rubber down on the track, it is a little bit faster, and I was able to go a little bit quicker than normal. Overall, the qualifying run was really good. The Cape guys gave me an awesome car, and it’s been great from the moment I’ve stepped on this track.”

Fat Boy Racing! driver Brenden Puderbach is the only National Class driver present this weekend, and was the first driver on track for qualifying. His two lap average of 130.14mph was good enough for eighth quickest.

TJ Fischer who was the last driver on track was able to go 1.3 mph quicker on his second lap, to just nip his Team Pelfrey teammate Carlos Cunha for the third qualifying spot.

Anthony Martin was the only driver to qualify on Cooper Tire sticker rubber meaning he’ll be the only driver starting the 55 lap race on scuffed rubber.

What we’re watching for the race:

  1. Driving it too hard into Turn 1, and not being able to recover.
  2. Navigating lapped traffic.

Gateway Motorsports Park – Pro Mazda practice #1

By Steve Wittich

Championship points leader Anthony Martin started the lone oval weekend of the 2017 Pro Mazda season on the front foot, after a lap of 140.964mph. The Australian was followed closely by Victor Franzoni, Carlos Cunha, Nikita Lastochkin, and TJ Fischer.

The lone 45-minute Pro Mazda practice session was only a few minutes old when the yellow flag came out for Juncos Racing’s Jeff Green, who spun and made just the slightest contact with the SAFER Barrier in Turn 4. The No. 60 was able to get back on track, turning the 6th quickest lap, and a total of 57 laps.

At the half-way point of session, Franzoni’s lap at 139.598mph was the quickest, and was followed by Martin, Cunha, Fischer and Lastochkin.

Not long after, Martin jumped to the top of the time-sheet with the first lap over 140mph, and the two championship front-runners traded quickest laps three times before Martin turned in his quickest lap in the final five minutes of the session.

The nine entries turned a total of 473 laps. Bobby Eberle turned 66 laps, the most of any driver.

Pro Mazda at Gateway Motorsports Park – Preview – Martin and Franzoni in battle for $790,000 Mazda Scholarship Package

By Steve Wittich

For the first time in Pro Mazda history, the series will visit the 1.25 mile Gateway Motorsports Park paperclip oval in Madison, Ill.

Reigning USF2000 champion Anthony Martin and his main competitor for the $790,300 Mazda Motorsports scholarship package, Victor Franzoni, headline a nine car field entered for the St. Louis Pro Mazda Oval Challenge Presented by Cooper Tires, the only oval race of the 2017 season.

Martin, a 22 year-old from Australia, outscored the Brazilian Franzoni 92-81 during the three race weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to earn a four point lead headed into the final three races of the year.

“My mindset is the same as Mid-Ohio – to maximize every championship point I can get,” explained Martin. “I have to really focus on working with the team to make my car perfect from practice through to the race.

“We tested here two weeks ago. We learned a lot with the car and we were able to get faster and faster each session. The surface is brand new and it is soooooo smooth. It really is like a billiard table! I have never driven an oval that is high speed like this one so it is definitely different to be driving around corners at those speeds.”

Martin who’s come from behind win on the oval at Lucas Oil Raceway Park was the turning point in his battle with Parker Thompson during the 2016 USF2000 Championship battle, will be making his third oval start, but his first in the Mazda Renesis powered Pro Mazda machine.

Franzoni made a Pro Mazda oval start at Lucas Oil Raceway Park in 2015, starting ninth and finishing sixth , and will be making his fourth career oval start. Franzoni finished third in USF2000 races at the Clermont, Ind. oval in 2014, and 2016.

With the tight title fight between Anthony Martin and Victor Franzoni, don’t be surprised if the championship comes down bonus points. The MRTI doles out one bonus point each –  for winning the pole, leading the most laps, and turning in the quickest race lap.

Martin’s five poles, six races with the most laps led, and four races with the quickest race lap equates to 15 bonus points.

With three poles, three races with the most laps led, and four races with the quickest race lap, Franzoni has scored 10 bonus points.

2017 Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire bonus points through nine of 12 races

Rank Driver Bonus Points
1 Anthony Martin 15
2 Victor Franzoni 10
3 Carlos Cunha 1
4 TJ Fischer 1

While most of our attention will be focused on the Martin vs. Franzoni championship tilt, TSO is also watching a few other interesting battles.

TJ Fischer currently leads Team Pelfrey teammate Carlos Cunha for third in the championship by a slim eight point margin. But, it’s the Brazilian Cunha that has been the hotter of the two, outscoring Californian Fisher by 12 points over the past two events. Both drivers are making their first ever oval starts.

Further down the points table, TSO is watching the fight between 49 year-old three-time Pro Mazda expert class champion Bobby Eberle, and 60 year-old Juncos Racing rookie Jeff Green who are separated by only six points for seventh place. Once again, both drivers are making their oval debuts.

The first Pro Mazda practice of the weekend will take place at 5:15pm on Saturday. The second rung of the Mazda Road To Indy presented by Cooper Tire will qualify at 1:45pm, and race at 4:55pm on Sunday.

MRTI at Mid-Ohio – Sunday – Pro Mazda Race #3 – updated with impound information

By Steve Wittich

An extremely determined Anthony Martin, who has won his fifth race in his last six tries at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, put in the most dominating MRTI drive of the season.

Martin, the reigning USF2000 champion beat the points leader coming into the race, Victor Franzoni, to the checkered flag by a vast 13.9957 seconds. The Australian led all 23 laps from the pole, and his quickest lap of 79.833 seconds was an unheard of eight tenths of a second faster than any of his completion.

“I knew I had one job to do and that was to win the race. I was a little ticked off from yesterday so I might have had a little more aggression today, but I had to put what happened yesterday out of my mind – racing is racing and those things happen,” said Martin. “I didn’t look behind me until the back straight, when the team told me that Victor was in second and that I needed to go. From there, it was head down. The Cape boys gave me a great car all weekend and it was almost a 100 percent successful weekend. It was great to see we could do it and that helps with three races to go. Pressure motivates me to do better and I think being on top makes me go faster so I’m confident going forward.”

With the maximum of 33 points scored, Martin has unofficially grabbed a four point lead in the championship with three races remaining.

Why unofficially?

Because Andersen Promotions has impounded the cars of the top-three finishers to conduct a more robust technical inspection. The cars of podium finishers Anthony Martin, Victor Franzoni, and Carlos Cunha will be transported to Indianapolis, Ind. for that process, and official results will not be official until later in the week.

Motorsport.com has learned that all three teams with a car within the top three, Cape Motorsports, Juncos Racing and Team Pelfrey, have at various times during the season, have accused each other of various forms of malfeasance. By subjecting all three teams cars to a vigorous inspection, Series Officials hope that it will put those accusations to rest.

After a slight delay to get things cleaned up after a previous race, the 14 Mazda Renesis rotary power plants were fired for the third race of the Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio Presented by Allied Building Products triple-header.

For the fifth time in ten Pro Mazda races this season, it was Martin that led the field to the green flag.

After a tidy two-by-two start, Martin pulled a slight gap, with Franzoni took a look inside of Cunha in Turn 1. The points leader heading into the race, wisely thought better of it and tucked in behind the No. 81 of Cunha on long run up the hill to The Keyhole. Fraznoni was a able to get inside of Cunha and had the preferred inside line through the off-camber 180 degree Turn 2, completing the pass and slotting in behind Martin.

At the end of the first lap, Martin had already been able to build a 1.2 second gap over Franzoni. The remainder of the top 10 were Cunha, Nikita Lastochkin, TJ Fischer, Sting Ray Robb, Bobby Eberle, Kris Wright, Bob Kaminsky, and Max Hanratty.

The three bright yellow Team Pelfrey cars visually appeared as one as they ran nose-to-tail on the long run up to The Keyhole. The No. 82 of Fisher was able to get by the No. 80 of Lastochkin for fourth.

On Lap 8, World Speed Motorsports rookie Sting Ray Robb, split up the Team Pelfrey trio when he made a daring pass around the outside of Lastochkin in Turn 4.

Martin steadily built on his early lead and by the half-way point of the half-hour race, the Australian’s lead over Franzoni had grown to over four seconds.

For the first 20 minutes of the race, Franzoni had a fairly comfortable one second lead over fellow Brazilian Cunha, but not long after, the rookie began to make inroads on the veteran.

Cunha was able to quickly cut the veteran’s lead to under half of a second, and spent a number of laps stalking Franzoni, before making made a daring move to get by Franzoni in Turn 5 and 6, but falling just short.

The Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tire series will be back on track at Gateway Motorsports Park for round 10 on August 26, 2017.

MRTI at Mid-Ohio – Saturday – Pro Mazda Race #2

After 23 mostly sedate laps, the second Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio Presented by Allied Building Products of the weekend triple-header was turned on it’s head.

Pole sitter Anthony Martin was able to get to the first turn before Victor Franzoni, who started outside of him. For the first 85% of the race, it was Martin, the reigning USF2000 champion, who held just under a one second lead over Franzoni, the current Pro Mazda points leader.

The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is notoriously tough to pass at, and Franzoni told us that: “I had a better car and I was faster in the middle of the race but it was another day that I was just stuck and I couldn’t do anything.”

On lap 15, the two leaders started catching lapped traffic, putting six different drivers a lap down before they caught Franzoni’s Juncos Racing teammate Jeff Green right at the entrance to “The Carousel.”

Martin went to the outside of Green, who got as far to the inside as he could at corner entry, the No. 60 Mazda powered machine remained on the inside line through the majority of the corner. The natural line is to open your hands to let the car track out at corner exit, but with Martin inside him, Green instead turned the steering wheel to the right. This unsettled the car and it looped around.

Martin took an evasive mover, going through the grass on the outside of Turn 12, and allowing Franzoni to squeeze inside the spinning car of Green and the Soul Red No. 8 of Martin.

“Victor was right on my tail the entire race. I tried to be conservative with the tires so I found a lap time that I was comfortable doing and tried to stick with that,” explained a disappointed Martin. “I knew that he wouldn’t be able to pass at those lap times. I looked in the mirrors to see where he was struggling versus where I was strong and tried to capitalize in those spots as much as I could. The race went well – I can’t thank Mazda and Cooper Tires enough, they give us everything we need to go out there and race, and the Cape guys gave me a great car as always. To set the fast time is always a good achievement. As far as what happened at the end of the race, getting put out by Victor’s teammate was not the way I wanted it to happen. It’s bad when lapped cars affect a championship.”
