CAPE MOTORSPORTS CONTINUES USF2000 WIN STREAK AT INDIANAPOLIS

Anthony Martin and Parker Thompson split victories on Indy road course

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 18, 2016) – After dominating the action in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda doubleheader at Barber Motorsports Park in late-April, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing fueled their momentum even further when two of their drivers split the victories during the Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.  Australian talent Anthony Martin drew first blood on Friday as he scored his maiden Mazda Road to Indy win, while Canadian Parker Thompson made it three wins in four races as he was victorious on Saturday, adding to his double-win total from Alabama. Cape’s third driver, Russian-born Nikita Lastochkin, was collected in an incident on Friday and then battled back to 11th in the second race on Saturday.

“What a brilliant job our whole USF2000 team did at IMS,” offered Nicholas and Dominic Cape. “It’s a constant fight every session to try to be on top, with all the front runners pressing as hard as they can. Anyone could be on the pole and anyone could win a race, it’s truly fantastic to be a part of.”

In the opening race on Friday afternoon, Martin led from the green flag after starting on the pole thanks to turning the fastest lap during morning qualifying.  Thompson started alongside his teammate but was outrun into the opening corner by Pabst Racing’s Jordan Lloyd.  Contact deeper in the pack on the opening lap put the race into a full course caution and, on the ensuing restart, Martin again managed his lead while Thompson found a way around Lloyd to move into second.  For the remainder of the 30-minute race, Parker pushed hard to chase down Anthony, but it was not in the cards as the 2015 USF2000 Rookie of the Year was brilliant all day and cruised to the first Mazda Road to Indy win of his young career by a margin of 0.514 seconds in his #8 Burgess BLA entry.  Thompson had a large gap over the third place car, while Lastochkin was not able to finish the race after he was struck by another car that was attempted to get back onto the track after an off into the grass.  He was officially classified in 23rd.

Thompson’s second fastest lap in qualifying earned him the pole for Race 2 on a chilly Saturday morning, and the Canadian bolted away at both the green flag and on the restart after a long early yellow flag period in his #3 Weyburn Energy / Uber / #AlbertaStrong Van Diemen. The series point leader picked up where Martin left off from Friday, running off to a 0.711-second win, his third of the year and Cape’s fourth straight triumph. Martin never gave up the chase for his second victory of the weekend and finished in the runner-up position, vaulting him to second overall in the championship standings behind Thompson, who now leads by 28 points. Lastochkin was able to avoid issue, and finished in the 11th position in his #2 Russkaya Mekhanika entry.

The team is definitely on a roll with four straight wins and first and second in the standings.  They will return to competition in Indianapolis on the May 26-27 on the banked 5/8th mile oval at Lucas Oil Raceway for the newly scheduled Carb Night Classic in the Friday evening before the Indianapolis 500.  The USF2000 pilots will run on a 75-lap main event, called the Freedom 100.

PARKER THOMPSON – #2

Qualifying: 2nd – 1:26.173

Race #1: 2nd

Race #2: 1st

Driver Quote: “”The Grand Prix of Indianapolis treated the #2 Cape Motorsports car very well. We knew what we had to do, and that was to maintain solid finishes for the championship. It was another near perfect weekend for us. My hat goes off to the entire Cape Motorsports crew for preparing us great cars for the start of the season. I can’t thank Weyburn Energy, Uber and my remaining partners enough for all of their support. Things are feeling great at the moment, but it’s time to put my blinders on and focus hard on the midway point of the season coming up.”

ANTHONY MARTIN – #8

Qualifying: 1st – 1:26.105

Race #1: 1st

Race #2: 2nd

Driver Quote: “Coming out of the Grand Prix of Indianapolis with a win gives me more confidence going into the next race, the Freedom 75 at Lucas Oil Raceway. Having finally got a win under my belt and an strong weekend overall, I’ve moved to second in the championship and now I can strive hard to gain more points on my teammate!”

NIKITA LASTOCHKIN – #3

Qualifying: 7th – 1:26.768

Race #1: 23rd

Race #2: 11th

Driver Quote: “Indy was a very tough weekend for me, as after the day of testing I got sick and was running a fever, which was getting only worse throughout the weekend. In the first race, I made a late pass on a car that went on the grass coming out of the previous corner, but he did not see me and turned into the back of my car, which got airborne. There was a lot of damage to both the chassis and engine, but my team did a phenomenal job in putting the car back together for the race the next day. On Saturday, we had quite a long safety car period and I made a mistake on the restart, which cost me a few spots. All in all, I have to say big thank you to Cape Motorsports, as everyone on the team helped me get through the weekend. Right now, I’m focusing on getting well rested and being ready to for Lucas Oil.

Jamin and Eidson continue to improve pace during rookie season

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 18, 2016) – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing returned to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course last week (May 11-14) for the fifth and sixth rounds of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, and their rookie drivers Nico Jamin and Jacob Eidson turned in solid performances to solidify their positions in the top six of the championship point standings.  Jamin, the reigning Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series champion, posted a pair of top-five results that have moved him into fifth in points, while Eidson finished sixth and seventh in the doubleheader and now sits sixth overall in the title chase.  The team improved its pace throughout the road course event and now has its sights set on the Carb Night Classic at Lucas Oil Raceway on May 27, the first of two oval events on the Pro Mazda schedule.

“We’re extremely pleased with our drivers, as we got another good solid performance from our guys,” offered Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We’ll just keep working as hard as we can to close the gap.”

Cape’s Pro Mazda duo ran two one-hour sessions on the track’s 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course in an official Promoter’s Test on Wednesday and continued to make progress during both of Thursday’s 30-minute practice opportunities as well.  On Friday, Jamin and Eidson began the day with qualifying in the cooler morning hours, warmed by sun and blue skies, and the speed’s reflected the ideal conditions. Jamin was seventh quickest in his #2 Soul Red Mazdaspeed Pro Mazda, while Eidson was eighth at the end of the half-hour timed session.

The opening race of the weekend went caution-free, and despite that fact that Jamin’s car had a little too much downforce to allow for maximum straightaway speed, he was still able to overtake two competitors to move from seventh to fifth at the end of the 40-minute race.   Eidson was able to advance early and grab a couple of spots, and although he would give one up later in the race after a minor miscue in Turn 7, he was rewarded with a strong sixth place finish.

In the second main event, which was held early Saturday morning in chilly 45-degree temperatures, Jamin was able to hustle his car after dropping two spots at the green flag.  After making adjustments to the aero levels on the car, Nico was happy with the added straight-line speed and was able adjust to the decreased grip to advance three positions back to fifth just past the midway point, setting up a battle with Juncos Racing’s Garett Grist.  Jamin made a stunning last lap move on Grist to take over the position, and finished fourth.  This was his sixth consecutive top-six finish and has advanced him to fifth in the championship standings, just four points out of third.  Eidson was embroiled a thrilling battle for sixth, battling three-wide in a few corners, and at the checkered flag, he finished in the middle of the fight with two Juncos Racing drivers to take seventh.

The 2016 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires will head back to Indianapolis on May 26-27 for the Carb Night Classic at the banked 5/8-mile Lucas Oil Raceway where Cape’s Pro Mazda drivers will compete in the annual Freedom 90 event.

I enjoyed every second of it, and we had a pretty good weekend overall with fifth and a fourth place finishes. It was big in terms of points for the championship and I am getting closer to the podium of the drivers’ standing. I am very excited to race on the oval at Lucas Oil Raceway during Carb Day before the 100th running of the Indy 500. We have high expectations, and I am definitely looking to get the first oval win of my career.”

Parker Thompson wins at famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway and maintains USF2000 points lead

Canadian pilot scores two USF2000 podiums on IMS road course to extend championship lead

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 16, 2016) – They call it ‘The World’s Greatest Race Course’ and, on Saturday (May 14), the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway was the location for a masterful performance by Canadian Parker Thompson, as he scored his third win of the year in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda.  The 18-year-old took full control of the second race of the weekend doubleheader, which was held on the facility’s 2.439-mile 14-turn road course, and bested his teammate Anthony Martin by 0.514 seconds to extend his lead in the championship standings.  The Red Deer, Alberta high school senior kicked off a successful weekend in his quest for the series title by finishing second in the first race of the event on Friday afternoon.

Coming off a stellar performance at Barber Motorsports Park in mid-April, where Parker swept the weekend to record the first two USF2000 wins of his young career, Thompson was greeted to warm temperatures and sunny skies when he hit the track for two test sessions on Wednesday.  He led the first session of the day and finished up second in the final run.  The unique schedule for the IndyCar Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis would see Parker running official practice sessions on Thursday, Timed Qualifying and Race 1 on Friday, and Race 2 on Saturday.  Practice and qualifying went well and Thompson would qualify second, putting him on the outside of row one for the start of the first 30-minute race.  His consistency in qualifying paid off as he gained the pole position for Race 2 thanks to having the fastest second-qualifying lap in the field.

Friday’s race saw Parker drop to third at the green flag, but after an opening lap caution, he took full advantage of the restart to move back to second.  He quickly tucked in behind Martin’s rear wing as the Cape duo stretched away to a commanding advantage at the checkered flag, as the remainder of the race went to the checker free of caution periods.  Thompson was just a half-second behind the race winner and was a full 2.5 seconds ahead of third place.  This was Parker’s third straight podium finish and extended his point lead even further.

Saturday dawned extremely cool with temperatures in the mid-40s, conditions that would certainly challenge the talented Canadian.  Thompson’s Cape Motorsports squad made the right adjustments to his #2 Weyburn Energy / Uber / #AlbertaStrong Van Diemen so that it would handle the extremely low track temperature, and he would take the lead from the green flag after starting from the pole position.  Parker paced the field through the opening lap, but contact between three cars in Turn 7 brought out a quick yellow flag.  Just as he did at Barber, Thompson handled the restart expertly and was again able to maintain the lead, holding the top spot for the remainder of the race add another USF2000 victory to his resume.

For the Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis, Thompson had much of his heart back in Alberta as he was also focused on his efforts to raise awareness of the recovery program surrounding the devastating fires that have destroyed Fort McMurray, along with other upper Albertan communities. Parker ran a logo for the #AlbertaStrong hashtag on the side of the #2 Cape Motorsports entry, and all week long, he was campaigning for donations towards the cause.

“It was another extremely successful weekend for myself and the entire Cape Motorsports organization,” commented Thompson, who now leads the series standings by 28 points. “It feels great to put the team where they belong, on the top step of the podium. At the same time, grabbing my first win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is something that I won’t soon forget. It was extra special putting the #2 #AlbertaStrong car in victory lane in support of the wildfires that have taken Fort McMurray, Alberta. I can’t thank Weyburn Energy, Uber and my remaining partners enough for putting me in this position. There’s still a long way to go in the championship, but we will be looking to maintain this form headed into the midway point of the season.”

The talented Canadian will return to Indianapolis later this month positioned as the championship point leader of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda for the series’ only oval race of the year, taking to the banked 5/8-mile Lucas Oil Raceway for the Carb Night Classic on Friday, May 27.  Thompson finished sixth in his rookie run on the challenging speedway last year, and will return focused on a win in the Freedom 75.

Parker is thankful for the opportunities provided to him by his valued partners, including Weyburn Energy, Uber, Sylvan Lake RV, Bell Helmets, OMP Racing, Lapizta Watches, Openhwy, Mazda and Cooper Tires.

The on-track sessions from the Carb Night Classic and the Freedom 75 at Lucas Oil Raceway will be broadcast live on roadtoindy.tvand can be streamed through the Mazda Road to Indy app, which is available on iTunes and Google Play for Android devices.  Parker Thompson fans can also find these shows available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire and Roku TV on the new Road to Indy channel.

Canadian Parker Thompson gives championship team first wins of 2016 campaign

BIRMINGHAM, AL (April 29, 2016) – After being kept off the podium in the opening round of the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing stormed back with a vengeance last weekend at Barber Motorsports Park, sweeping the doubleheader thanks to a breakthrough performance by their young sophomore driver, Parker Thompson. The Canadian qualified on the pole for the opening race and pulled away to a convincing win on Fridayafternoon, and then backed this up with the flawless triumph in the second race on Saturday to complete the sweep and take over the championship point lead. Australia’s Anthony Martin also improved on his results from St. Petersburg in March, scoring a pair of top-five finishes that included a third place run in Race 1.  Nikita Lastochkin was also on his game, as the Russian pilot posted a pair of top-seven results, highlighted by a fourth place in the second race of the weekend, his best career USF2000 finish. All three team drivers now sit in the top-eight in the championship standings.

“Our hats are off to our USF2000 team,” offered Dominic and Nicolas Cape, team owners. “They did an awesome job over the weekend and we’re happy to grab our first wins of the year.  Our goal is to carry some momentum going into the month of May.”

Qualifying went extremely well for the Cape Motorsports trio, with Thompson leading the way in his #2 Weyburn Energy / Uber / Sylvan Lake RV entry, turning a lap of 1:24.668 to secure his first career USF2000 pole position, and the all-important bonus point that accompanies the top starting spot.  Martin was just 0.05 seconds back in his white #8 Burgess BLA / Mazda / Cooper Tires Van Diemen, making it an all-Cape front row. Lastochkin was still finding his rhythm, laying down the eighth quickest lap in his #3 Russkaya Mechanika machine.

Thompson got a great start to the opening race of the weekend and maximized his speed on cold tires to quickly open a gap, and he remained 100% focused throughout the 30-minute race to extend his margin of victory to 4.278 seconds at the checkered flag. Martin was in the podium hunt all race and despite battling with minor grip and balance issues, he did his best to take care of his tires and was rewarded with his first podium finish of the year in third.  Nikita maintained his position throughout the race and his seventh place result completed a strong day for the Cape Motorsports pilots.

Martin moved over to the pole for the second race of the weekend, held on Saturday, but Thompson got a solid jump at the green flag to run parallel with his teammate powered through Turn 1, which gave him in the inside line for the right-hand Turn 2.  After taking the lead, the field was slowed by a full course yellow on lap two, and then a second caution on lap 14, which pressured Thompson to handle two restarts.  He maintained his lead each time and came home with his second win of the weekend.  Martin posted his second top-five of the weekend with a strong fourth, while Lastochkin improved as well and finished fifth, putting all three Cape cars into the top-five to cap the event.

Armed with confidence and momentum, the team is now looking forward to the next event, which will take place on May 12-14 on the road course circuit at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Thompson will enter the race leading the championship standings by 11 points over Luke Gabin, while Martin and Lastochkin sit fifth and eighth, respectively.

CAPE MOTORSPORTS ADD ANTHONY MARTIN TO USF2000 LINE-UP FOR 2016 – Australian standout prepares for sophomore season with championship-winning squad

Cape Motorsports with /WTR logo

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (February 13, 2016) – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing has completed its three-driver line-up in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, adding the talented Anthony Martin to the team. The Australian won last year’s Rookie of the Year crown and finished fourth in the championship standings. The 21-year-old will join the previously announced Parker Thompson and Nikita Lastochkin in Cape’s international trio of USF2000 pilots.

“We’re delighted to announce that after a spectacular season that handed him the Rookie of the year honors in the 2015 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series, young racer Anthony Martin will be stepping into one of our cars for our 2016 campaign,” enthused Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We know from watching him last year the potential he has. With Anthony running alongside Parker and Nikita, we have a very strong team. We now have the opportunity to go to war and see what we can achieve as a team. Race wins are the motivation from the get-go.”

Martin’s Rookie of the Year run in 2015 was a display in consistency, punctuated by three runner-up finishes that came at Barber Motorsports Park, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. He scored five podiums in 16 starts and finished all but two races in the top-five, displaying immense talent and impressive maturity. Martin honed his skills in karting, scoring two Australian karting championships in 2012 before moving to the West Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2013, where he took two wins, and won both the Rookie of the Year and overall title, the youngest ever to do so. In 2014, Martin was back to defend his title and aided in the development of a new chassis. Once they got things dialed in, he came away with 12 victories in 21 starts and finished second in the final championship standings.

“I am very happy to be able to announce that I will be joining Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing for the 2016 USF2000 Mazda Road to Indy season,” Martin confirmed. “It is going to be a very strong field of drivers this year and I am very proud to again be a part of it. To be able to race for a very competitive and professional race team like Cape Motorsports is an honor and to be back in America to fight for the 2016 Championship is something I am very much looking forward to. The 2015 season was a great learning year for me in the USF2000 Championship and to finish fourth in the series and win Rookie of the Year, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the American racing scene. To be back in the USA for 2016 would not have been possible without the continued support from my sponsor in Australia, Burgess BLA and, of course, my family.”

The 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda gets underway on March 11-13 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, although Martin will be on-track at the official series test, which takes place the previous weekend at Barber Motorsports Park.
