Scott Hargrove Signs with Team Pelfrey for St. Pete Indy Lights Weekend

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2016) – Team Pelfrey announced today that Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires driver, Scott Hargrove, will pilot the No. 3 Gap Guard Team Pelfrey Indy Lights Mazda in rounds one and two at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

“I’m ecstatic about joining the new Team Pelfrey Indy Lights program,” said Hargrove. “It’s clear that this is a team that knows how to win, and I’m very confident we’ll be competitive right out of the gate. After nearly a year out of the Indy Lights car, St. Pete will be a great reintroduction as it is one of my favorite tracks on the schedule and I’ve had success there in the past.”

Upon the March 11-13 race weekend, Hargrove will also test with the team at Phoenix International Raceway on February 25th. Indy Lights Team Principal, Gary Neal, will look to utilize the Mazda Road to Indy veteran’s experience and insight along with Juan Piedrahita’s short oval success.

Team Pelfrey Indy Lights Team Owner and Principal, Dale Pelfrey, see’s his first-yearprogram a force to be reckoned with on the Mazda Road to Indy.

“My goal when forming the Indy Lights program was to find a way to make a statement in the Mazda Road to Indy,” said Pelfrey. “With the addition of Scott and Juan and the experience of the former 8Star Motorsports crew, we are adding key ingredients that will establish a competitive, experienced and winning culture. We can’t wait for St. Pete.”

“Adding Scott Hargrove in a second Team Pelfrey Indy Lights car for St. Petersburg to partner with Juan Piedrahita is great for the team,” said Neal. “Yves Touron [Engineer] and I had the pleasure to work with Scott at St. Pete for his debut in the Dallara IL-15. Now we can come back with some track data with the same driver and look for a competitive showing. We will use input from both drivers, and I am sure we will see the benefits of being a multi-car team.”

The 21-year-old Surrey, British Columbia-native previously worked with Neal andTouron in 2015, competing at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg with 8Star Motorsports. The Canadian finished in 4th place and 6th place respectively.

“I had the pleasure of working with Gary and Yves in 2015; they are great guys with the passion and desire to win. It’s always beneficial to work with people you already have a great relationship with, and that certainly is the case here,” said Hargrove.

Hargrove joins Juan Piedrahita in the Team Pelfrey camp. Piedrahita’s experience racing with Hargrove and Mazda Road to Indy experience bodes well for the two-car team.

“I’m very excited to be joined by Scott,” said Piedrahita. “He is a great driver and having two cars on the track will help a lot with the team development, I know Scott will be a great teammate, I really hope Scott will be my teammate for the rest of the season.”

With the season opener in less than 17 days, Team Pelfrey Indy Lights and Scott Hargrove are optimistic about their future in fielding the Canadian for the rest of the 2016 Indy Lights season.

“There is no doubt in my mind I will run for the entire season. Every day, I’m gaining momentum, and it’s just a matter of time until everything is in place and we can focus 100% on racing for wins and the championship.”

BROWNSBURG, IN (February 23, 2015) – Belardi Auto Racing is pleased to announce that they have added another extremely talented pilot to their driver roster for the upcoming 2016 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires program, teaming reigning European Formula 3 champion Felix Rosenqvist with multi-time series race winner Zach Veach to form an impressive one-two punch on the Mazda Road to Indy’s top rung.  Rosenqvist tested with the operation at Homestead-Miami Speedway in January and topped the time charts, coming up to speed quickly as he became more comfortable with the car and the team.  Felix and Zach will be back in their trademark red and white Belardi Dallara IL-15s this Thursday for an oval test at Phoenix International Raceway, ahead of the official MRTI test at Barber Motorsports Park on March 5.

“We’re thrilled to have a driver of Felix’s caliber to pair with Zach, as we were determined to provide him with a strong teammate,” offered team Principal Brian Belardi. “After winning the championship with Gabby (Chaves) in 2014, our whole squad has raised its game and our expectations and I’m confident that with these two talented young men in our cars, we’ll contend for both wins and the title itself. I’m very impressed with Felix and I’m excited for the season to begin.”

Rosenqvist, 24, has won everything there is to win in international Formula 3 competition, so a transition to the Indy Lights program is a solid career move for the accomplished Swedish driver.  Victories in the Masters of Formula 3 and Macau Grand Prix marquee events add prestige to his resume, which is headlined by his European F3 championship in 2015, which came on the strength of 13 wins and 24 podiums in the 33 races that were held.

The Swede’s rise through the open wheel ranks has been punctuated with wins and championships.  Before adding the Euro F3 title last year, Felix won the Formula Renault 2.0 Asia crown in 2008 and backed that up with the championship effort in the Formula Renault 2.0 Sweden series. Rosenqvist moved to the German F3 series in 2010 and won two races en route to fifth in the championship, and then advanced into the Euro F3 series in 2011 finishing fifth overall with his first win in the series coming at Hockenheimring.

“I’m really excited about racing in the US this year, and doing so with Belardi Auto Racing,” said Rosenqvist. “Testing went very well and I got to grips with the car pretty much straight away. I like the way the team operates, and the racing seems a lot of fun with a wide variety of circuits and pure driving. Racing on this side of the world will be very different to what I’m used to, but certainly a challenge I’m already relishing.”

The opening round of the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires is set for March 11-13 as part of the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.

TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 18, 2016) – Team Pelfrey Indy Lights has signed Juan Piedrahita for the 2016 Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season. 2016 will mark the Colombian-natives third season in Indy Lights after previously competing with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and Belardi Auto Racing.

“Team Pelfrey has a rich history in fielding great Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires cars,” said Piedrahita. “When I found out they would have an Indy Lights team, I knew they were going to be a top contender.”

After the 2013 season, Piedrahita graduated from the Pro Mazda Championship to Indy Lights, capturing a pair of fifth place finishes at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Sonoma Raceway. In 2015, Piedrahita finished with a career-best third place finish at The Milwaukee Mile.

Piedrahita, 23, joined Team Pelfrey because he wanted to join a powerhouse team with veteran leadership.

“Team Pelfrey Indy Lights has a quality staff with Gary [Neal] and Yves [Touron] taking care of the technical side; I’m very lucky to have the opportunity to join this team. I know Team Pelfrey will give me a very competitive car,” continued Piedrahita. “I am ready to work hard to win.”

The young driver would not be where he is today without the help of his fans and sponsors. Pawco, a company that makes innovative pet products in the United States, and Petrosur are the two major sponsors for Piedrahita.

“I’m very excited to have Pawco as a new partner for this season. I am happy to carry their paw logo on the car and join them in dog adoption campaigns. We also have Petrosur as a partner for one more year. They have been backing my career for more than ten years, and I am very grateful to have them one more year.”

Piedrahita is ready to achieve more success throughout this 2016 season with Team Pelfrey. His first race of the season is in March at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Juan is also looking forward to racing at the Freedom 100 this May.

“I can’t wait for the start of the season and the month of May when we race in IMS for the Freedom 100.”

Pro Mazda Championship Augmented by National Class in 2016

Pro Mazda Championship Augmented by National Class in 2016
Lower-Cost, Entry-Level Division Added to Mazda Road to Indy’s Middle Rung

PALMETTO, Fla. – The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires will include a revised sub-class for 2016 following today’s announcement that the Expert Series, which previously catered to drivers over the age of 30, will be brought more in line with the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Presented by Mazda and replaced by a new National Class.
Pro Mazda represents the middle rung on the acclaimed Mazda Road to Indy development ladder which provides Mazda scholarships to assist drivers graduating from karting through USF2000, Pro Mazda and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires to the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.
The new National Class will be open to any drivers who have reached the age of 20 before March 1, 2016 and is aimed at providing a lower-cost entry point. Eligible cars include those currently running in Pro Mazda specification and meeting the older Star Mazda technical requirements as governed by the Sports Car Club of America General Competition Rules pertaining to the FA class.
“There are so many former Star Mazda race cars competing in North American club racing and in other forms of open-wheel competition that it just makes sense to create an opportunity for interested drivers to sample the fantastic schedule of events we have in the Pro Mazda Championship,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions.
“With the revival of the National Class in USF2000, the model is perfect to use as a replacement for the Pro Mazda Expert class as it does not require any investment in changes required for our championship class car regulations. We look forward to welcoming some new faces and hope they enjoy this great new place to compete.”
Entry fees for the new National Class will be discounted 50 percent below the regular Pro Mazda rate, and each race winner will earn a free entry for an upcoming event in the same season. The second-place finisher will claim a 50 percent reduction in the entry fee for an upcoming race.
The National Class will utilize the same point system as the former Expert Class. Competitors will vie for their own separate classification and will not be eligible for overall series awards or championship points.
The 2016 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires will comprise 16 races, beginning with a double-header on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 12/13.

WEIRON TAN SET TO CHALLENGE FOR PRO MAZDA TITLE IN 2016

WEIRON TAN SET TO CHALLENGE FOR PRO MAZDA TITLE IN 2016

Malaysian driver Weiron Tan is set to challenge for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires title in 2016, after signing with Team Pelfrey to embark on his second year in the series. He is aiming to build on a successful rookie year, which saw him finish fourth in the standings, scooping four race victories along the way. He also finished Vice-Champion in the Cooper Tires Winterfest, scoring two wins and three second places from five races.

Tan joined the Pro Mazda series in 2015 after a successful junior open-wheel career in Europe.  At the age of just 17 he was selected by the Caterham F1 Team for its young driver development program. After competing in the JK Racing Asia Series and Formula Gulf 1000 Series, Tan concentrated his efforts on the European scene and scored multiple race wins in the Protyre Formula Renault BARC and ATS Formel 3 Cup Championships. He then moved to the USA ahead of the 2015 Pro Mazda competition.

Tan has now joined forces with Team Pelfrey for his second-year attack on the Pro Mazda Championship. Team Pelfrey is a Championship winning team that competes at all three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy – in the highly competitive Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires, Pro Mazda and Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Presented by Mazda series. With previous experience as a team in IndyCar, Team Pelfrey is now committed to developing the stars of tomorrow. Reformed as a Pro Mazda development team in 2011, Pelfrey was immediately on the pace and won multiple races, and the end result was a team Championship and Connor De Phillippi claiming second in the drivers’ Championship. In 2012, the team went one better, securing both the drivers’ Championship with Jack Hawksworth and the team Championship.

Team Pelfrey has won races in every season it has competed in since returning to the series, and recently added another drivers’ Championship title to its resume in 2015 thanks to Santiago Urrutia’s efforts.

The 2016 Pro Mazda Championship will get underway on the Streets of St Petersburg for rounds one and two from 11-13 March. The 16 round series will take place over nine race weekends, concluding in Monterey in September. In2015 Tan took his six victories at five venues, including outright victory at the prestigious Indy 500 support race.

Weiron Tan: “My rookie year in the US went really well and I cannot wait to get back into action in 2016. I came very close to winning WinterFest and was in the title fight for Pro Mazda throughout the season, so this year the aim is definitely to go for the Championship title and I’m in a strong position to do that with Team Pelfrey. St Pete can’t come soon enough.”

Jonny Baker, Director of Team Operations, Team Pelfrey: “We are extremely excited to welcome Weiron to Team Pelfrey for the 2016 Pro Mazda Championship Season. Weironshowed scintillating pace last season, and as a competitor he kept us on our toes throughout and always gave us a lot to think about. We are determined to battle for the Championship once again in 2016, and in order to do that, you have to be working with the best drivers. With Weiron on the team, I think we have one of the most exciting young talents on the Mazda Road to Indy.”

CAPE MOTORSPORTS ADD ANTHONY MARTIN TO USF2000 LINE-UP FOR 2016 – Australian standout prepares for sophomore season with championship-winning squad

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. (February 13, 2016) – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing has completed its three-driver line-up in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, adding the talented Anthony Martin to the team. The Australian won last year’s Rookie of the Year crown and finished fourth in the championship standings. The 21-year-old will join the previously announced Parker Thompson and Nikita Lastochkin in Cape’s international trio of USF2000 pilots.

“We’re delighted to announce that after a spectacular season that handed him the Rookie of the year honors in the 2015 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda series, young racer Anthony Martin will be stepping into one of our cars for our 2016 campaign,” enthused Dominic and Nicholas Cape. “We know from watching him last year the potential he has. With Anthony running alongside Parker and Nikita, we have a very strong team. We now have the opportunity to go to war and see what we can achieve as a team. Race wins are the motivation from the get-go.”

Martin’s Rookie of the Year run in 2015 was a display in consistency, punctuated by three runner-up finishes that came at Barber Motorsports Park, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. He scored five podiums in 16 starts and finished all but two races in the top-five, displaying immense talent and impressive maturity. Martin honed his skills in karting, scoring two Australian karting championships in 2012 before moving to the West Australian Formula Ford Championship in 2013, where he took two wins, and won both the Rookie of the Year and overall title, the youngest ever to do so. In 2014, Martin was back to defend his title and aided in the development of a new chassis. Once they got things dialed in, he came away with 12 victories in 21 starts and finished second in the final championship standings.

“I am very happy to be able to announce that I will be joining Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing for the 2016 USF2000 Mazda Road to Indy season,” Martin confirmed. “It is going to be a very strong field of drivers this year and I am very proud to again be a part of it. To be able to race for a very competitive and professional race team like Cape Motorsports is an honor and to be back in America to fight for the 2016 Championship is something I am very much looking forward to. The 2015 season was a great learning year for me in the USF2000 Championship and to finish fourth in the series and win Rookie of the Year, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the American racing scene. To be back in the USA for 2016 would not have been possible without the continued support from my sponsor in Australia, Burgess BLA and, of course, my family.”

The 2016 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda gets underway on March 11-13 at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, although Martin will be on-track at the official series test, which takes place the previous weekend at Barber Motorsports Park. National Class Reintroduced in USF2000 – Champion to Receive “Ticket” to $200K Scholarship Shootout

PALMETTO, Fla. – Drivers seeking to make their way onto the Mazda Road to Indy now have an alternate, lower-cost route onto the first rung, the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, with today’s confirmation that the National Class will be returning in 2016.

The Mazda Road to Indy is unique in the world of auto racing, offering a scholarship-funded path all the way from karting via USF2000, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires to the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500.

Eligible to drivers at least 20 years of age before or during the 2016 season, the National Class will be open to all Sports Car Club of America-legal FC (Formula Continental) cars, from any chassis manufacturer, dating back to 2000. Any aerodynamic devices approved by the SCCA are permitted, although in the interests of safety all cars must be fitted with a nosebox crash structure, wheel tethers, Staubli devices, approved head surrounds and seats and yellow light system as required by all other current USF2000 cars.

Cars will be permitted to run either the same 2.0-liter Mazda MZR engine per the USF2000 Championship Class regulations or sealed 2.0-liter Ford Zetec motors as prepared by Elite Engines or Quicksilver RacEngines with National Class mapping. Any SCCA-legal 6″ and 8″ wheels may be used, although all cars must run on Cooper tires.

Entry fees will be discounted 50 percent below the Championship Class rate, and each race winner will earn a free entry for an upcoming event in the same season. The second-place finisher will claim a 50 percent reduction in the entry fee for an upcoming race. In addition, race winners equipped with the MZR engine will take home a $1,000 award from Mazda.

As an added benefit and based on a minimum average car count of five entries per race weekend, the 2016 National Class champion will receive an “entry ticket” to the Mazda Road to Indy $200K Scholarship Shootout in the fall of this year where champions of select junior level-open wheel and karting series from around the world will compete for a Mazda scholarship to enter the USF2000 Championship Class in 2017.

The point system will be the same used by the Masters Class (formerly Expert Class) in the Pro Mazda championship.

“We are excited to bring back the National Class and allow drivers to sample the Mazda Road to Indy,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “RC Enerson began his path on the ladder system in the National Class. It’s a great first step onto the platform for many drivers, and we are excited to offer this year’s champion an entry into the Shootout as well as a full-season entry package to USF2000 in 2017 in either the Championship or National Class.”

The Mazda Road to Indy will head to Barber Motorsport Park for Spring Training on March 5 (Indy Lights) and 6/7 (USF2000/Pro Mazda). The 2016 season will kick off on the Streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., on March 11-13 in support of the Verizon IndyCar Series.
