USF Pro 2000 Discount Tire Grand Prix of Indianapolis Qualifying

By Patrick Stephan This weekend’s qualifying session for USF Pro 2000 got started with the track still damp down on the north end. (NOTE: This has me questioning if USF2000 drivers went to slicks for their session as a source had told me – I’ll have to check on that during a break later today)….

The sun shone between low clouds, and the ambient temperature was still a comfortable 81F when the lone USF Pro 2000 Presented By Cooper Tires practice session started.

The early leader in the half-hour practice on used tires was reigning USF2000 Championship Presented By Cooper Tires champion Michael d’Orlando (Turn 3 Motorsport).

With ten minutes remaining, Joel Granfors (Exclusive Autosport) topped the timing screens, but it was close with d’Orlando, Jace Denmark (Pabst Racing), Myles Rowe (Pabst Racing) and Jonathan Browne (Turn 3 Motorsport) all within a tenth of the Swede.

d’Orlando and then Porto jumped to the top of the timesheets when the drivers went to fresh Cooper Tires.

The 20 drivers turned 317 laps of the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course, with 2022 USF Pro 2000 Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course winner Salvador de Alba (Exclusive Autosport) the busiest. The Mexican driver completed 21 circuits.

VRD Racing’s Nikita Johnson leads USF2000 practice – six teams in top six spots – notes and results

By Steve Wittich

The single half-hour USF2000 Championship Presented By Cooper Tires practice session before Friday morning qualifying took place late on Thursday afternoon, getting the green flag at 5:10 pm. The sun shone in Speedway, Ind, and the ambient temperature was 82F.

After five minutes of running, race control reminded the teams and drivers that any driver leaving the track surface at the exit Turn 6 would have their lap invalidated. Additionally, offenders would be denoted utilizing the car’s transponder.

Points leader Simon Sikes (Pabst Racing) led early in the session, with Lochie Hughes (Jay Howard Driver Development) grabbing the top spot on the timing screens just past the halfway point. Exclusive Autosport rookie Chase Gardner was the third quickest after 15 minutes.

Lap times continued to fall, with Nikita Johnson (VRD Racing), who waited until late in the session to take to the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course going to the top of the timing screens on only his third lap.

New tire runs meant the timing screen was full of green and purple as drivers got their fresh Cooper tires into the optimal operating range.

Nobody could touch Johnson, with Sikes and reigning USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires champion Mac Clark (DEForce Racing), jumping into the top five at the end of the session.

The top eight drivers – Johnson, Hughes, Sikes, Clark, Gardner, Ethan Ho (DC Autosport), Sam Corry (VRD Racing) and Jorge Garciarce (DEForce Racing) were within a half-second.

The top six drivers represented six teams.

The 20 drivers completed 258 laps.

With three wins, four podiums and three fastest laps, USF Pro 2000 Presented By Cooper Tires rookie Myles Rowe (Pabst Racing) is off to one of the hottest starts in all of motorsport this season.

The 22-year-old, who recently graduated from Pace University in New York, NY, carries a commanding 42-point lead over his next closest rival for the $664,500 Discount Tire Driver Advancement Scholarship.

However, the series heads to a track known for chaos (see the creative video from Scott Hargrove below) and a hungry group of aggressive competitors will look to trip him up.

The hungry group of drivers from second through sixth – Francesco Pizzi (TJ Speed Motorsports), Kiko Porto (DEForce Racing), Jace Denmark (Pabst Racing), Lirim Zendeli (TJ Speed Motorsports) and Joel Granfors (Exclusive Autosport) have at least one podium and are separated by only 11 points.

Last year, eight drivers representing six teams stood on the nine possible podiums across three series races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, proving that anything can happen on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course.

Home race

Jackson Lee was born in Indianapolis and lives in Avon, Ind. The 20-year-old is coming off his best USF Pro Championships finish, crossing the line in fifth place at Sebring International Raceway.

The Indiana University/Purdue University (IUPUI) student’s No 47 from the Turn 3 Motorsport stable features many local sponsors, including the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, Browning Chapman and Prime 47 Indy.

Second-generation racer Jack William Miller was born in Westfield, Ind, and calls Carmel, Ind., home.

The 19-year-old will be making his 40th USF Pro 2000 start in Friday’s first race. The driver of the Patterson Dental/Blue Marble Productions sponsored No.40 has two poles, four podiums, 11 top fives, and three quickest laps of the race in 71 USF Pro Championship starts.

“We are very excited that it’s May and finally be back on track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway,” said Miller. “We are looking forward to being back in the car and using the knowledge we gained over the break during our events this weekend.”

Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course notes and numbers

  • Salvador de Alba (Exclusive Autosport) has a USF Pro 2000 race win on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
  • Yuven Sundaramoorthy (Exclusive Autosport) has two USF2000 wins, and Kiko Porto (DEForce Racing) has one USF2000 win on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
  • The pole sitter has won 50% of the USF Pro 2000 races here, but that doesn’t tell the entire story. More recently, in the six races over the past two seasons, no pole winners have won, and the average starting position of the race winner is 5.5.
  • Michel Jourdain, Jr. protege Salvador de Alba won the first USF Pro 2000 race on a damp track from the 12th starting spot last year, the deepest in the field a driver has won from.

Previewing the USF2000 triple-header at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

By Steve Wittich

The USF2000 Championship Presented By Cooper Tires, travels to Indianapolis, Ind., where 25% of the season’s points are available between now and Memorial Day Weekend.

The “Month of May” begins with a triple-header on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course for the 22nd, 23rd and 24th races on the infield road course.

With a 30-point advantage over the competitors, Simon Sikes (Pabst Racing) and Lochie Hughes (Jay Howard Driver Development) are the favorites to win the $433,200 Discount Tire Driver Advancement Scholarship. However, there is still plenty of time for other drivers to get in the mix for the title, but they can’t waste any more time.

Georgian Sikes holds a razor-thin three-marker advantage over Hughes, despite the Aussie having a two-to-one advantage in the wins column. Both drivers have an average finish of 2.3 after four races, with Sikes’ edge coming from scoring five more bonus points. Sikes has started from the pole in the last three races, led the most laps in the second race at Sebring International Raceway and had the quickest lap in all four races to start the 2023 season.

Simon Sikes (Pabst Racing) celebrates a USF2000 Championship Presented By Cooper Tires win at Sebring International Raceway with team owner Augie Pabst Photo credit: Gavin Baker Photography

Hughes, the reigning F4 United States Champion, has six wins in 22 North American starts, equating to an impressive win percentage of 27.3%.

A pair of youngsters, 15-year-old Evagoras Papasavvas (Jay Howard Driver Development) and 14-year-old Nikita Johnson (VRD Racing), trail championship leader Sikes by 30 and 33 points, respectively.

Cypriot-American Papasavvas started the season with three straight top fives before a mid-race incident dropped him back in the final race at Sebring International Raceway. If the driver who calls Loveland, Ohio home, continues to collect top fives, he’ll find himself in the championship hunt as the season progresses.

Evagoras Papasavvas (Jay Howard Driver Development) on track at Sebring International Raceway Photo credit: Gavin Baker Photography

“I’m really looking forward to all the excitement of the Month of May in Indianapolis and at the Speedway this weekend,” said Papasavvas. “I’ve earned a podium on each track we have competed at this season, and I’m not looking to slow down now. Indy is always an interesting race, and I think the team, and I are on track to compete for that top spot.”

Johnson, a winner at home in St. Petersburg, Fla., has had one of the four quickest laps of the race in all of his starts this season and trails only Sikes in the fastest lap of the race category, averaging 3.3 over the first four races of the season.

The following four drivers on the points table – reigning USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires champion Mac Clark (DEForce Racing), improving Jorge Garciarce, who had his best finish last year on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course (DEForce Racing), Kiwi sophomore Jacob Douglas (Exclusive Autosport), and Chase Gardner (Exclusive Autosport), who made his series debut on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in a one-off effort last year – are all within ten points, and still in play for the championship.

Canadian Clark and 17-year-old Douglas are coming off hard-fought podiums in the second race at Sebring International Raceway. However, both drivers qualifying efforts – Clark’s average is 10.3, and Douglas’ average is 9.0 – will need to be better if they want to fight for wins.

Home race

Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing Development rookie Elliot Cox, from Indianapolis, Ind., will make his first USF2000 start at his home track. The 15-year-old, who has his own charity – Driving For Dyslexia – has fellow dyslexic, the late Justin Wilson, as his racing hero.

Cox scored two top tens, including a fifth-place finish at Sebring International Raceway, to move into tenth on the points table.

Al Morey, from Fortville, Ind, will be making only his 14th start in cars this weekend. But, despite his lack of experience, the 17-year-old has completed every lap this season and found more pace every time he’s on track.

“I am really looking forward to racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway later this week,” said Morey. “I live not that far away so we will have a ton of family and friends on site. It will be a great time, and I will be aiming to reset my series best results this weekend.”

“I want to be consistent and learn,” continued Morey. “If I can do that each race weekend, I will be able to accomplish the goals that I set forth at the beginning of the year.”

Welcome back

Canadian Lucas Mann will join Exclusive Autosport (The Eh! Team) for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway triple-header. Mann made his series debut at the Portland International Raceway season finale last year.

“I am super happy to be back racing in the USF2000 Series,” enthused Mann. “I am excited to experience Indy during the Month Of May, even if we are racing the opposite direction. Thank you to Exclusive Autosport for the opportunity to run at IMS and to ANSE3D.com. This track always promotes great racing and I can’t wait to be a part of it.

#19 Nicolas Giaffone, DEForce Racing, OMNI, DEForce Racing

By Steve Wittich

Second-generation racer Nicolas Giaffone and DEForce Racing continued their domination that began in qualifying on Thursday afternoon.

The Brazilian led a one-two-three finish for the Houston, Texas-based DEForce Racing, the team’s third straight USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires win at Barber Motorsports Park.

Giaffone finished ahead of his teammates, Australian Quinn Armstrong and Brazilian Lucas Fecury.

The David and Ernesto Martinez-led squad has won three of four races this season and eight of the 19 series races in the last two seasons.

Fecury’s visit to the podium is his first as he fought off hard-charging championship leader Joey Brienza.

Giaffone scored max points, including a bonus point for his pole win, leading the most laps and setting the quickest race lap, taking over the championship lead by a slim three points.

Jimmie Lockhart (VRD Racing) made up two positions, finishing in the top five for the third straight race.

After one pace lap behind the pace car, the front row of Giaffone and Fecury brought the field to 15 cars to the green flag.

The field made it cleanly through Turn 1, but with incidents in Turn 2 and Turn 5, the yellow flag flew from the timing stand before the drivers completed one lap.

The No. 29 VRD Racing machine of newcomer Hudson Schwartz ended up backward in the gravel outside of Turn 2 after contact from Carson Etter in the No. 57 from the DC Autosport stable. Etter was penalized for incident responsibility, moving to the back of the pack for the restart.

The incident in Turn 5 involved Jack Jeffers, the driver who started fourth.

The AMR INDYCAR Safety Team got both cars going, but Schwartz lost two laps, and Jeffers No. 92 came to pit road and could not continue.

The running order under caution was Giaffone, Armstrong, Fecury, Ethan Ho (DC Autosport), Joey Brienza (Exclusive Autosport), Erick Schotten (Exclusive Autosport), Max Taylor (VRD Racing), Jimmie Lockhart (VRD Racing), Ethan Barker (VRD Racing), Juan Felipe Pedraza (Ram Racing), Brady Golan (DEForce Racing), Etter, Giovanni Cabrera (Exclusive Autosport), Schwartz (VRD Racing) and Jeffers (Exclusive Autosport).

On the first lap under green, Brienza pressured Ho for fourth while Lockhart worked on Schotten for sixth. Lockhart was able to get the move completed moving into sixth.

On the next lap, points leader Brienza got by Ho for fourth, taking after Fecury for the final spot on the podium.

On Lap 8, Sebring International Raceway race winner Armstrong turned the race’s quickest lap, moving in on his teammate in the lead.

At the crossed flags signifying the halfway point of the race, Giaffone’s lead over his teammate was down to 0.7 seconds, with the front two holding almost a four-second gap to Fecury in third.

After losing two spots earlier, F4 United States Championship race winner Lockhart moved back to sixth with seven of the 20 laps remaining.

The gap between Giaffone and Armstrong remained constant at under one second. The best battles on the track were between Ho and Lockhart for fifth and Taylor and Schottten for seventh.

Over the next two laps, Giaffone grew his lead to over two seconds with a pair of laps over a half-second quicker than his Aussie teammate Armstrong.

With four laps remaining, Lockhart moved to fifth, while Taylor got around Schotten for seventh. In front of that action, Coloradan Brienza was putting pressure on Fecury for the final spot on the podium.

With three laps remaining, Giaffone had a 2.6-second lead over Armstrong, who had six seconds over his teammate Fecury.

Brienza continued to put pressure on Fecury, crossing the line less than half a second behind Fecury over the next two laps, looking inside in Turn 5 on the final lap before settling for fourth, ending his string of podium finishes to start the season.

The second USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires qualifying sessions at Barber Motorsports Park finished like the first, with dominant performances by second-generation driver Nicolas Giaffone and DEForce Racing.

The 18-year-old from Brazilian was over half a second quicker than his teammates Lucas Fecury and Quinn Armstrong, lowering his track record at Barber Motorsports Park to 85.738 seconds.

Fecury rounds out the all-Brazilian front row, with Armstrong and reigning Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion Jack Jeffers starting from the second row.

The 15 USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires drivers were the first cars on track early on Friday morning at Barber Motorsports Park.

Overnight rain cleared the track of any rubber, but with mostly sunny skies at 7:45 am, the track was dry. The ambient temperature was 66F, and the track temperature was 73F.

VRD Racing’s Jimmie Lockhart was the early leader, but as the drivers got their tires up to temperature laps, times were falling quickly.

DEForce Racing’s Giaffone, Armstrong and Fecury waited longer than their competitors to head out on the 2.3-mile, 17-turn natural terrain road course, but it didn’t take long for them to go to the top of the timing screens.

Giaffone held the provisional pole at the halfway mark of the 20-minute session, with Jack Jeffers (Exclusive Autosport), Armstrong, Joey Brienza (Exclusive Autosport) and Jimmie Lockhart (VRD Racing) rounding out the top five.

Giaffone was the first driver to go under 86 seconds and, on his sixth lap of qualifying, lowered the track record he set on Thursday afternoon.

For the second straight qualifying session, the No. 33 of Max Taylor (VRD Racing) brought out a red flag with just under five minutes remaining in qualifying. This time, the driver from New Jersey spun in Turn 1.

Giaffone’s teammates Fecury and Armstrong had just set the second and third quickest laps matching the first qualifying session.

The AMR INDYCAR Safety Team quickly cleared the car of Taylor, and the track went green, with drivers allowed to complete one timed lap.

Nobody improved, giving Giaffone a second pole, the fourth at Barber Motorsports Park for DEForce Racing.

Giaffone and DEForce Racing dominate first USF Juniors qualifying at Barber Motorsports Park

A dominant performance by rookie Nicolas Giaffone capped off a stellar qualifying effort for DEForce Racing, who will start from the first three spots in tomorrow’s first USF Juniors Presented by Cooper Tires race.

The 18-year-old Giaffone’s pole-winning lap of 85.802 seconds was over a half second ahead of his teammates Lucas Fecury and Quinn Armstrong.

Exclusive Autosport rookie and defending Lucas Oil Formula Car Race Series champion Jack Jeffers rounds out the second row.

Starting from the third row is Ethan Ho (DC Autosport), the only driver with race experience, Barber Motorsports Park, and current points leader Joey Brienza (Exclusive Autosport).

After two damp test sessions and one practice session on a drying 2.3-mile, 17-turn Barber Motorsports Park natural terrain road course, the 15 USF Juniors drivers were met with dry conditions for their first of two qualifying sessions for the Cooper Tires Grand Prix Of Alabama.

With 20 minutes of guaranteed green flag time, getting up to speed quickly was paramount.

It only took the new JR-23 two laps to go under the track record set by DEForce Racing’s Mac Clark last April.

After each driver had completed three laps, Fecury held the provisional pole with a lap at 86.379 seconds, followed closely by his DEForce Racing teammates Giaffone and Armstrong.

Second-generation racer Giaffone was the first driver to break the 86-second barrier, grabbing the provisional pole with just over half of qualifying remaining. The Brazilian’s lap was a full half-second ahead of Fecury as drivers continued to search for more speed.

The red flag came out with a little under five minutes remaining for a car in the tire barrier at the crest of the hill between Turn 13 and 14. From reports on the ground (we just arrived in Birmingham), it was the No. 33 of Max Taylor (VRD Racing).

Unfortunately, that brought the session to a close, with Giaffone winning a third straight pole for DEForce Racing at Barber Motorsports Park.
